Sony to support PSP Minis devs all the way "unlike with the App Store", free PSP SDK may come in the future

Sony's strategy for the PSP Go -- and to a certain extent, for older PSPs -- seems to target Apple's App Store directly. In the eyes of Sony Europe's head of developer relations, Zeno Colaco, they're not directly gunning for the App Store at all, but they will be doing things better.

In an interview with Develop, Colaco opined that the App Store doesn't provide adequate help and visibility to developers -- two things that Sony's own PSP Minis service will have plenty of.

"Unlike with the App Store, we’re looking to support everyone that develops for us, instead of leaving developers out in the wilderness,” said Colaco. “We’re not immediately interested in giving developers free access and no help.”

“There are dangers in having total open access; like having thousands of applications where probably only thirty are discovered by the consumer,” he added. “Some of the developers working on the App Store and PSP Minis tell us that they prefer our approach because they get more visibility.”

In the same interview, Colaco said that a free SDK model may also be in the cards for PSP Minis developers. One reason that the App Store is awash in apps and games because their SDK itself is free to download, although developers have to pay a US$ 99 fee to enrol in the iPhone developer program.

“Further down the line, we may investigate a totally free model or supported model,” he said. Sony has already reduced the price of the PSP SDK to US$ 1,500. The company has also announced that they will be waiving bandwidth fees for developers interested in the service as well as providing a more streamlined QA and approval process.

Sony's PSP Minis service is due to launch along with the PSP Go on October 1. So far, 15 titles have been confirmed to be available at launch. A total of 50 titles are expected to become available by the end of the year.

mmm

"developers working on the App Store and PSP Minis tell us that they prefer our approach because they get more visibility"

no *****in duh

theyre shining on the network, by making simple games, and getting a good bit of cash for it

the question is do consumers

personally i believe

the sdk should be free (not saying it should but would prefer)

there should then be a website/forum

in which other dedicated developers release the app and rate others,

once a game has got a certain amount of good ratings it appears on a seperate category on the store

it still leaves all games to be playable by those who really want homebrew, by logging onto the website and manually downloading it

by StingBlah - 2009-09-08 07:32
so basically,

you want the app store.

by hush404 - 2009-09-08 07:35
...

the article says the PSP SDK has dropped to $1500... and I remember seeing that they dropped the price 80%... meaning they were charging nearly $8000 for the kits before hand!?!??! NO wonder no one wanted to dev for the system.

by hush404 - 2009-09-08 07:39
LMAO

dish is sting :)

by apex05 - 2009-09-08 07:43
Good idea?

Knowing Sony's recent history they'll do something that seems good like a free sdk, but then they'll do something really dumb and drive a load of people away like their greedy pricing on Psp go.

by StingBlah - 2009-09-08 07:45
dish is sting?

what does that mean lol

by Techni - 2009-09-08 08:01
...

$8000 is pretty cheap for a dev kit. Even GBA's cost more than that.

Think before you speak next time.

by D.Dark - 2009-09-08 08:39
Greedy???

To all the people out there that keeps saying that Sony is being greedy by having the PSP Go price so high...do you actually know how much money it cost to make the Go and how much money Sony is making on the Go sales? Or are you just assuming???

by apex05 - 2009-09-08 08:57
...

My assumptions come from the fact Sony thinks they can charge the same for umd's as for downloaded games, and stupidity comes from them not being competitive with prices and not making the most of their hardware with features and services which would attract new buyers.

by JaXeRiR - 2009-09-08 09:00
Uh.. D.Dark.

Do YOU know how much money it costs to make the GO, and how much money they are making? Please share this information with all of us before you start defending Sony.

For the exact same reason you probably shouldn't attack Sony either.

mmmm

lol

us made the first comment

u should back urs up first

also u have to be more careful when accusing not defending

i believe the go has a lower dev cost

howeber since when is making a nice profit from demand greedy

being greedy would best describe a cancellation of a service that was promised to make more profit

business is business

the few people who are greedy are MPs

THE REASON WHY dlc costs the same as umd

is to prevent the high street from yapping

and to get the go on the street others the high street wouldnt support it

think things through in future

by emcp - 2009-09-08 09:17
mmmm

NO

the appstore shows all apps, to the general market which is bad

however all apps should be shown on the devsite away from the general public

the devs then decide what makes it to the general public, directly

by FreePlay - 2009-09-08 09:44
.

True, but it's pretty prohibitive for a smaller dev outfit. It pretty much locked out anyone who couldn't afford to risk a bad selling game.

by WiiRolled - 2009-09-08 09:46
What?

Just imagine you buy that 8000 $ kit and develop a game that sells 50.000 copies, 1 $ profit per sold copy.

by apex05 - 2009-09-08 09:48
...

I don't see how keeping downloadable game prices high will keep high street retailers happy.. High prices will put people off buying games so if stores sell psn vouchers they'll make less than if games were cheaper and more people could afford, can someone please explain the logic behind this theory.

by truk - 2009-09-08 12:54
simple

retailers were complaining that because the psp go is all dd that there will be less retail shoppers.

by FreePlay - 2009-09-08 13:16
OK

Now imagine that you buy that $8000 kit and develop a game that sells 500 copies, $1 profit per sold copy. You're out $7500.

by NathanDrake - 2009-09-08 23:18
...

Hey if the SDK was free or at least more affordable to home users I'd get right on there and make me a couple games too.

by PSPMAN90 - 2009-09-09 14:21
I think the PSP Go has a reasonable price

as its for the new hardware and some software too. Still have some features but not as much as the price should demand. Still it would be a great handheld for first PSP gamers, and for fans. Also you wnat a little, affordable Media device (not iphone) get the PSP Go :)

I'm sure that Go will Go on the Dark side soon :)

Thanks Hombrew Scene for these premonitions! lol

Carry on!
