Sony to stay by UMD's side |
Ó
Quite frankly, the PSP's Universal Media Disc format is one big contradiction staring at all of us. For several times already, various sectors of the video game industry told Sony to abandon the format because of several limitations like its size. Sony, however, has remained adamant all these years. This stand was recently echoed by PlayStation Portable Senior Marketing Manager John Koller as he reiterated the different strengths of the format. He mentioned,
UMD possesses many strengths, from size to form factor to portability. Duplication of UMDs is much easier, cheaper than cartridges. We've really optimized time and cost by going with a disc-based format. UMD is a unique medium to create games and developers need to understand that when tackling the system.
It seems that Koller really believes his own statements because he wasn't afraid to point out the weaknesses of the UMD as well - implying that Sony is not just being stubborn about it. He added, "There's no question the biggest weakness is related to porting games from other platforms. Publishers are concerned about the size of UMD because they can't cram a DVD game on to it".
Given all these, the marketing manager explained that Sony really believes in the format and is not going to drop it. Koller shared, "We'll never walk away from our base. Whether it's movies or game content, third parties have an incredible opportunity to utilize it. The future of UMD is bright".

UMD= Useless Media Disk
When they are launching a Burner
UMD= Useless Media Disk
When they are launching a Burner
I'm Gay
I can see it now blu ray umd. LMAO.
To the guy on the top the will probaly only release a burner if the format goes mainstream in media, which it is not and probably never will be.
Sony sounds a lot like Nintendo did when they stuck with cartridges for so long. What happened to the Sony that used to be innovative and cared about what the devolpers wanted? It seems Sony was much easier to deal with when they were hungry for market share.
they should really get a different format.
UMDs size are more likely to be the PSX size.
If they increased the capacity, though a lot of PSP games don't even take up that much space, but some of the awesome ones take up all the space, I don't really know if that's a problem for developers though.
well at least a 1.8gb UMD is better than a 128mb NDS card. (1 GigiBit equals 123\8mb)
i meant 128mb
holds more then that.
ya they only like it becaus it possesses the inability to be written and burned on a computer (yet) but only a matter of time till somebody figures out how to burn those discs, then sony will suddenly decide to change their current format
I'm gay too.
Just to clarify
1 byte(B) + 8 bits(b).
It's a 1.8 GB UMD, and a 1 Gb (128 MB) NDS Card
I'm gay too.
y dont sony make like a duel layer disk but for psp ?? it would hav the same size and twice the memory so people cant complain about the graphics and size of psp games (good)
but sony will up the price of umds if they use my idea lol
They're already dual layer.
Gay People Will *****ing Burn in Hell
They complain about disc space? Wow they will complain about anything, Legend of Heroes Sora no Kiseki second chapter is the only 2 disc game I know of. certainly 2 discs aren't that bad compared to the PSONE. If these guys forgot there are 5 disc PSONE games out there.
Don“t flame gay people, you *****. You should have pitty with them.
memory sticks are faster than UMD, and not only faster, but WAY faster, and they use almost no energy compared to the UMDs... But they cost WAY MORE.
So I think they should make the games on memory stick, anyway right now the memory sticks cost way less than before(4g for about 50$, and 1gig for about 15-25$, so maybe 1-5$ to make for sony). Also, you can upgrade the space for a game really easilly, you just use a memory stick with more space on it... instead of making a new console, or worse, making a less great game...
Trueness at its best.
I don“t give a ***** if they bring out 2 or 3disc games. Actually I would like to play games which are so complex that they use so much disc space and have *****loads of goodies.
are you gay too? you *****ing *****gots Will *****ing get RAped By Satin
Well my take on this is yall are expecting way to much for a handheld system. Yall act like they just release the psp as a next system. The graphics on the psp is 10x better then majority of the DS games. Some of the titles they have made I would agree they could have done a better job but overall the PSP does so much its really hard to complain. Plus if you use your psp like some of the folks i know you dont have to worry about UMD's and you do what you want. So if they manage to get rid of the UMD's and strictly work with SanDisk's then that would be great but they need to make better memory card holders so they dont get lost. Now again PSP games are the best looking handheld games made but as far as the fun factor on most they do need to work on that. Better graphics are always welcome.
"There's no question the biggest weakness is related to porting games from other platforms..."
I have an idea STOP PORTING GAMES FROM OTHER PLATFORMS, and make new games.
P.S. Two umds doesn't sound that bad, I'm just glad that the makers of legend of heroes clued in to that fact.
pspfan+ the biggest load of useless crap.
UMD is the best idea ever made.
If you hate it so much don't buy psp simple as that.
Um don't take this the wrong way but, what does "gay" people have to do with psp.
they alreayd thought of that, which is why they went with UMD. There are lots of benefits with UMD then not.
Shut up your the biggest load of trailer park trash.
How about you stop buying UMD for the psp if you hate UMD's so much.
4.7gb umd
"If you hate it so much don't buy psp simple as that."
Actually, I just download all my games because UMD sucks so bad... They need to make it faster and less noisy. The space is fine but it really needs to be faster for sure.
Actually, the official definition for the acronym UMD is in fact Unreliable Motor Disk. Sony have talked so much bull***** about how great their UMD format is that they have managed to convince themselves. They are truly in denial.
The UMD format offers the consumer no advantages, more noise, unnecessary moving parts inside of a portable, more battery draining, more bulk to carry around, a lovely gap on the under side of the disk that was designed to ensure dust, scratches and finger prints are introduced to the disk and to top this of there is no real protection for the disk. Even failed MiniDisc format had a sliding metal part on the case that protected the disk.
ya, what's up with the clear plastic top always coming unaligned from the white plastic edge!!!
im sick of good games on the psp running in 16-bit mode and still laggy in big areas :( like the magna carta portable ps2 to psp port ;[
yeah i've also noticed developers dont utilize the full UMD data storage, its a shame. that could be why we get so many people saying "psp sucks" or "this game sucks id rather play my DS" although i dont have one, its for the classics where psp is not.
UMD is a piece of ***** *****wad.
(@stealth)
says who!? plz study this page http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psp/ then regret your past
When has Sony, ever, EVER, been innovative, or cared about what anyone other than itself?
...and those 5 disc ps1 games were tha bomb, like final fantasy for example
buy psp2
no-one else knows the standard for it, so no burners, meaning no mass duplication or piracy (even iso's need large memsticks to run them at full speed - e.g. ISO and not CSO).
A change in format (unless they use memsticks, which i doubt) would mean a change in the hardware for the psp, meaning a second version with a lot of unhappy psp users.
what the fk is wrong with you people. am i the only one making sense?
wasnt there one game or maybe still being made thats going to be in 2 UMD disks?
theres no limit to size if u do that
when they made radios to be sold in target?
they rock
"We've really optimized time and cost by going with a disc-based format." COST? Thats BS. $50 for half of a dvd game. The games should be like $20-$35 brand new. They should know why sites like this are up.
All Sony is hungry for is MONEY, they dont care about developers or customers.
Sony want to sell as much UMD pr0n as possible. The UMD format was designed with pr0n in mind.
im gonna kill my self tday..OGM, im so hih right now..oh, weed is *****ing great...my psp is turning pupu color..yeah haha h
Wtf its not like Sony even has a choice. Yes aboned UMDS and get rid of the only media the psp can play? Wtf they have to make umds as long as thye wanna make psp games.
I personally dont mind the UMD.... (not like i really use em anyways lol) I would rather have a UMD drive than a dvd drive or something huge like that stickin out the back of my psp.... I wish sony could find a way to like upgrade the firmware to play CSO format off the UMD so you could compact the ISO immage and have it still be readable on the psp
Everyone who knows about software is wise enough to know how crappy the UMD format is. But that wasn't why I posted "wow, way to go sony", it's because if the game publishers and developers say it's crap then how can you come a defend yourself and talk positive about it when you don't publish or create the games! Now wonder Sony is having troubles and is starting to cut jobs, they're losing all third party support!
They were innovative when they invented the walkman, it's the only electronic I have ever admired a lot from them.
Difference is that while CDs were very cheap UMDs are expensive. In addition, CDs are big but thin, I don't think putting 5 UMDs on a case is good, what kind of case would they need?
How about next time you smoke weed on a cliff
We need more smart people and less idiots and you sir are an idiot.
Anyone notice that it's not even sony, it's this guy. I don't see the problem with a cartridge really. for a hand held it doesn't sound that bad. I mean I'm sure they can create a cartridge that holds way more than a disk. Look how far the technology has come. I'm a big psp fanboy and a sony fan, but they need to start listening. I mean it's the companies making the games for your system telling you that this isn't working well for them. Listen to them they know what they are talking about. And a cartridge doesn't break as easily as a UMD. And it's easier to carry 12 cartridges than 4 UMDs. Look at the (cough)DS(cough ) if they can make it work why can't you. Sure the UMD might be cheaper, but not for us. We buy the UMD then we have to buy a case for like 14 bucks that holds about 6 or 8 when some people have like 24 games. They could scarp the UMD and make games on a cartridge that could go in the memory stick slot.
As long as i can play games on my psp, with dem UMD disks? IM fine.
LOL that made me laugh~!
I don't know why people are ranting about UMD's, they are pretty portable and give the PSP a "fingerPrint" Remember, not everyone has a massive 4 GB memory stick. The UMD looks cool to me.
Plus transferring files from PC to Memory Stick takes some time, what if I want to play the game "now"?
VIVA LA FLASH MEMORY!
i'd much rather get raped by velvet my self LOL
unless you mean satan. then it makes more sense in which case i would rather be raped by satin, sorry.
8 bits + 1 byte,
1024 bytes + 1 kilobyte,
1024 kb + 1 megabyte,
1024 mb + 1gigabyte, so as you said above 128mb in a gb your completely WRONG!!
as the people above say that it hold 1.8gb and is the value of 128mb which it is not its more 1600+mb and i think thats what dave meant by can hold more
No, you are wrong, Skus monkey, and Mr Toasty is right...
1 Gb (Giga Bit) + 1024 Mb (Mega Bits) + 1024 / 8 MB (Mega Bytes) + 128MB (Mega Bytes)
And the "equals" and "plus" signs are 2 different things, but it could very well be a problem with QJ so I don't blame you. I have problems with QJ too, my posts usually lose their formatting, and the "quotes" are escaped (antislash before them).
THEY SHOULD LAUNCH ISO FILE DOWNLOADS
...at least until PSP2 (and I am not talking PSP redesign).
It is the media format of PSP and a good way to deliver the game content, unrelated to its 'success' as movie medium.
1.8G is fine for portable games, who cares if it can hold the contents of a DVD?
No question, disribution over the net should replace UMD for some (smaller) games, but just as an addition.
If Sony was clever, they would just allow mem-stick installation of UMD games, which just copies/cashes the most used data on the memstick, reducing load times and extending battery life.
maybe if u read a bible every once and a while you would know how to spell satan but i guess youll just burn in hell along with all the gay people
you idiot sony is the only one who makes umds in fact sony owns the rights to "umd" (its right along the spine of the umd, if you actually owned one you would know) meaning there will not be any umd burner/blank umds because that would only increase the rate of piracy which is obviously what you intend to do furthermore that is exactly the opposite of what sony intends which is why theyre so pissed off about the 3.50 downgrader
Cost of producing them, idiot. The production price has a very small impact on the retail price in this situation. Retail price is decided by publishers.
sony just does not want People to figure out how to burn these(even though we all use ISO's lol)the umd was a good idea but when it comes down to it the disc is SO unreliable because they break to easy and there read speeds are really slow(which leads to slow loading times) and ya 1.8gbs thats real big it is but games need to take up more room like 4gb's and umds could never get that high(unless they did dual layer like some dvds)so thats why they need to switch to cartriges.
ever notice that umds are loud well all that clock work takes up battery life and a cartridge would tranfer fast much like a gba cartridge which does not need all that speed 4 horrible graphics
UMD is not the best format in the world, but, it is by no-means the worst, and allows for a great deal of work to be done. Games like DM prove that size+/+Quality, and um guesing the main complaint is coming from EA, whole likes to jam pack there games with $hit and sell millions to the casual public
We need less people who think they're witty by saying "you sir" in their makeshift insults.
RELEASE A GOD DAMN UMD BURNER AND EVEN A READER FOR PC AND UMD WILL LIVE
dark alex quit the psp scene!!!!!!!!!! !:(
MULTIPLE DISKS!!!! OMG!
Geez complaining about not being able fit a whole DvD game in the UMD just put half of the game on one and the other on the second UMD and in the middle of the game make a certain "disk change screen" so you can just pop in the another and volia!
Unless the idea is useless, because it can't "Technically" be done with the UMD format.
i love you fellas i bought your psp and im happy to say i LOVE
downloading ISOs for free its collio.... plus i made ā¬70 downgrading psps for people who are retarded and cant do it themselves I LOVE YOU SONY SO DOES MY COUNTRY FRANCE its very nice getting free things dont av to spend ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬
Instead of using a memorystick they could use a cartridge. I mean the DS makes it work I'm sure sony could make it even better. They could even make it work through the memorystick port. A cartridge would cost way less than a UMD also and they can make them hold as much as they want. They could use the UMDs for movies or whatever.
Sony will benefit by all those people downloading and not buying games....
I thought the UMD was a great idea. UMD movies however... Not so much
I WIN YOU F.U.C.K.I.N.G. GAY PEOPLE CAUSE I WILL RAPE YOU ALL AND THEN YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUE POWER OF SATIN!!!!!!!!!!
MUHAHAHAHAHAHA
BY THE WAY STICK DUOS AND ISOS RULEZ
PREPARE TO BE RAPED
MUHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHA
they were dual layer since day one...
How about they use a mini blu ray disc... it would hold like 22GB dual layer...
You dont understand, other than its great amount of space, it is slow, like 10x slower than a ds catridge, and it is bulky...
If they listened to their customers, like me, they would have made umd faster, more efficient, and the battery life better... besides, they already do that.
that could work, but wouldn't that cost more?
I'm gay too
i hate umds bcuz after u leave them in a a psp carrying thing for a while the plastic caves in nd it doesnt play
From making a dual layered umd they just need to actually make one.
the only thing i dont like about the dUMDisc is how S-L-O-W it is for the PSP to read from. if they made it so you could use the mem card as a load buffer or something, it might be better. like, "as you are playing, the next screens are loading to the mem card for faster load times" etc...
If you have a decent card it's only a matter of seconds. Plus exiting the game and selecting another is easier swapping and carrying multiple umds. Though the biggest advantage is the additional battery life. Not to mention flash memory is cheap enough that you can sell games on it and still profit, even if they are closer to the capacity of a umd. Finally, the psps could be much thinner without the disk drive in the middle.
what the hell is wrong with sony.. they should make games on 8gig memory stick... not on a 1.8gig umd...
gay people should hate themselves cuz they ruin society and they were made by straightness
you could also say
1000 bytes + 1 kilobyte,
1000 kb + 1 megabyte,
1000 mb + 1gigabyte
and also he said gigabit not gigabyte
hi noob get it right
Is there UMD's with porn on them?
