No guts, no glory. Despite the less-desirable state of affairs facing PlayStation right now, Sony continues to remain positive and prepares itself for a brighter 2009. That's gonna be tricky, seeing as the PS3 is the most expensive console out there, and the economy doesn't leave much room for pricey purchases right now. John Kohler let's us in on his game plan.

Game development is at the forefront of whatever success that the PS3 has right now. It wasn't easy in the beginning, since developers had the year-earlier Xbox 360 to work with. Now that the PS3 is two years old and developers are getting more and more accustomed to its software and hardware, things are looking up. "...we've had a nice run-up in game development for the PS3. It's shown that developing for the PS3 isn't as difficult as many had thought," said Kohler.

With the holidays beckoning and the industry suffering, Kohler remains optimistic that they will get a sizable sales boost in the coming weeks.

We've seen a very strong run-up in the last few weeks on the PS3 and PSP hardware. Games are selling very well...we're forecasting big things this holiday. We're very aware of the economic situation, and we monitor that hourly to make sure our sales analysis is on point. But everything we're seeing points to a really good holiday season for Sony. I think we're going to have a good run of it [this holiday].

PlayStation 3 - Image 1Between Home and NXE, Sony has been working on improving their download service, adding that consumers prefer to own content, not simply rent them.

Sony is also working on having downloadable PS2 games on PSN. So far, there are a lot of technical hurdles that impede their progress, but Kohler maintains that they are "absolutely interested" in the idea.

For now, they're expecting the PS3 to continue its momentum. To support that, they're going to tap their first-party groups to provide console-selling exclusives. "We would place Sony's first-party developers up against any other team," Kohler said. "Our worldwide studios group is as large as Microsoft's and Nintendo's internal studios combined. Some of the games we're seeing for 2009 are absolutely fantastic, and they will set the PS3 that much further apart.

As for the PSP, Kohler believes that 2009 "will be fantastic" for the handheld. The quantity and quality of games arriving into the platform will most definitely encourage sales. He didn't specify what titles are coming though. Even the PS2 will smile in 2009, with Sony still expecting 100+ titles for their old console.

Kohler wasn't big on details in this interview, but he did give an encouraging thought that the PS3 will be staging a comeback next year by enhancing existing features and bringing in new ones. Great. But how about a price cut?

Yeah right. With Starcraft 2 a coming, 2009 is the year of the PC.

Please tell me you have more then Starcraft 2 to say it's the year of PC. Hell even with Diablo 3, what else is there?

» PC's may get some great games...

but half of the people out there pirate them and get them for free....I wont be paying for SC2 or Diablo 3....if I decide to play them....

Fawk blizzard has goten enough of my money with me playing wow for the last 2 years, they can eat me...

The best argument you guys can come with to dis PC gaming is the fact that games are easy to pirate?

That's sad.

Granted it's probably going to hurt us in the long run, but the fact remains, we get most of the good 360 games, just like we did with the original xbox. Honestly the only stuff we don't get is DOA and Ninja Gaiden, which I can live without. Even Halo 2 eventually found its way into the PC, just like GoW2 will.

While I wait for GoW2 on the PC, I'll have plenty to play in the meantime, playing FPS games as they should be played, with better graphics and a keyboard+mouse control scheme. Or maybe I'll play an RTS, or a bioware RPG. Maybe I'll just grab Mass Effect again. Maybe I'll just finish Fallout 3.

Oh yeah, poor us PC gamers, we got nothing to do.

» What?!

In 2007 this is was also said to be happening in 2008, umm it's 2008 and your system is still losing bucket loads of money. Time to lower the price and make up the difference in accessories and game sales, take advantage of the fact that your system is yet not hacked. I truly believe this to be the last Playstation system, they took too big a leap in one generation and now they are, quite literally, been paying for it ever since.

ps3 is expensive? last i checked wii and 360 cost about the exact same. sure they have seperate bundles with different prices. an hdmi 360 with a hard drive will end up costing over 300, the wii will also end up costing over 300 (more like over 400 after wiimote+nunchuc k) as well. ps3 costs a lot less than a gaming pc and not much more than any of the competition.

by lavino - 2008-12-09 11:43
» I second that...

recently I bought a discounted 9800GT just to get my PC good enough to play most PC games. That already cost me slightly less than the cheapest 360 (of course it got even cheaper every week as I check the vid card). Cheapest 360 gives you nothing indeed but since I already got an old 20G Pro I am ok with that. I see some people spend $300 in costco buying just a bluray player at the same time. So may be they don't care about gaming but isn't the best deal still the PS3?!

Well reasoned. Although reluctantly, I would have to agree with you.

2008 was supposed to be the year of the PS3, and while it has been good, it is certainly nothing to brag about.

by Master Chef - 2008-12-09 21:10
» I was gonna say the same thing

Sony said 08 would be the year of the PS3. I really don't think that happened. Now with a lot of the huge games out (MGS4, SOCOM which sucks, LBP, Res 2) and maybe what was its biggest game now multiplatform (FF13) I think the PS3 is done making a shot at 2nd place.

Sorry Sony loyalists, I think you're just going to have to accept it at this point; the PS3 IS going to finish 3rd this time. I highly doubt anything is going to push it over the Xbox now, Sony hurt themselves too much with the initial $600 pricetag, and most people still don't care that it comes with a BR player for movies because for most people DVD is fine

I care of course, which is why I still plan on getting a PS3 :) I need me some HD movies, and MGS of course. But Sony is like the opposite of the Devil Rays, they are going to go from first to last.

The PS3 is probably the best value out there, from the sheer number of things it can do out of the box for free.

Consumers are stupid. They see price tags at the store and think that's all there is to the cost of owning a system.

by Master Chef - 2008-12-10 16:04
» Exactly

And that is where Sony killed themselves. It doesn't matter what the machine can do, if the pricetag is something you say HOLY SH*T to it's not going to sell well. And sell well the PS3 did not, at launch anyway. I;m sure it's still not selling nearly as well as Sony would like.
