PSP MMO - Image 1

Lots of developers (both official game studio developers and homebrew devs alike) consider the PSP as a handheld device capable of adopting the MMO genre. To a degree, games like Monster Hunter Portable and Valhalla Knights already somewhat overlap into the circle of MMO games.

John Smedley of Sony Online Entertainment is optimistic - he foresees a future in MMO games for the PSP.

I think PSP is something that weÂ’re definitely looking at; 34 million [sold] worldwide really opens your eyes, and theyÂ’re all connected. [...] weÂ’re really starting to see a big push for PSP. We think itÂ’s a world-class deviceÂ… In the future, we see full MMOs that are designed for the PSP.

Maybe one way to do it: In Free Realms, you could have a pet-training system that literally connects to our online gaming where you can mess around with your pet. Another way to do it might be to give them mini-games that they can do [on the PSP] when sitting at a bus stop. YouÂ’re sitting there leveling up your character, you log in at home when youÂ’re on wi-fi, and all of sudden your character has leveled up. We think those kinds of experiences are very possible.

Indeed, the concepts he presented sound highly plausible. What with Wi-Fi, Remote Play, and other functions for interconnectivity, seeing the PSP (whether via the PS3 or not) as a tool for grinding your characters on-the-go isn't all that hard to imagine. He already mentioned Free Realms, SOE's upcoming MMO for the PS3 and PC - could that be the start?

» Great ideas but...

If they're going to follow through with this, then they need to keep a tight lid on cheaters and hackers. If syphon filter dark mirrors online play is any indication of sony's dedication to keeping the future mmo games cheater and hacker free then there's no point in doing an mmo period.

IMO, the "minigames" that you can play offline to earn XP online sound like they're asking to be hacked, so you can get lots of free XP without actually playing the minigames. I guess the problem could be (somewhat) solved by limiting the amount of XP you can earn per day, so even if you do hack it, you don't get that much XP from it.

» well...

they could probably ban people who appear to be leveling too drastically or quikly to that which is physically possible without cheating... eg. level 1 to 30 in 5 mins..

» Sounds Cool!

I hope they give us a lot of different games like this in the future. I hope their well thought out and addicting!

» MMO?

I think an MMO would be awesome!

I think if they would implement PSN, like they have on PS3, online games for PSP could become Hack-free.

Especially if newer firmwares with added PSP-PSN functionality arrive.

I think Hackers/Cheaters should be shot...seriously

» Partly agree

I believe you should be banned for coming here and continually spamming about hackers needing to be shot, since it seems you have no respect for life and need not be a part of a community focused around software modifications to their systems.

That aside, I do partially agree. Hackers in online games (those that use something to create an effect in the game for others, which does include power leveling in an online game) tend to ruin the experience for many, and on the whole make games worthless to those who paid for them.

I stopped playing SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo after an incident with a cheater killing off people at random, destroying my fun and I'm sure others.

Chill dude.

I wasn't spamming - if you check most of my posts, I hardly mention hackers...I guess earlier in the day I was kind of pissed at a post I had read on a site by a guy who was blatantly going off about how he loved cheating and screwing with people online...I guess in a way I hoped he would read my comments...plus I too have suffered from Fireteam Bravo "Haxxorz".Sucks big time.

No respect for life huh?

This is the internet, do you take anything you read on QJ seriously?

I mean ok sorry if you're one of "those" guys lol but honestly, it's not like anything I type on here is worth anything anyway...

and about wanting them shot - you dont honestly think I am a serial killer or something do you?

I mean I'm not some heartless freak who wants to see the world burn.

BTW READ my posts again - I made no mention of people who mod or create homebrew.

I have no qualms about the homebrew scene, who doesnt agree that all the CFW and things they have done on the PSP that ISNT piracy-related is really amazing?

Honestly, chill out.

If I offended you, I apologise.

Peace.
