Downloadable games, music and videos won't be the only things you can fill your PSP Go with. The door has also been opened to non-gaming apps thanks to the price reduction on the PSP SDK.

“The goal with that is to enable all sorts of developers to be able to develop content for the PSP,” said SCEA's Al de Leon in a video interview with CNET. “It’ll mostly be games but there’s certainly an opportunity to develop non-gaming applications.”

There was a rumor a while back about some non-retail games and apps that were supposed to be announced at this August's Gamescom. Maybe there was some truth to that after all. What I'm really looking forward to seeing however is the lower SDK price's effect on indie games. I hope to see a few good ones on this rumored PSP app store in the future.

Homebrew anyone

Maybe this will open the opportunity for the devs

by dd409 - 2009-06-25 05:40
Finally

Sounds to me like they've finally realized that homebrew is what has been selling PSPs all along, and now they are trying to do some kind of official homebrew.

by enigmaticdude - 2009-06-25 06:20
no freaking way

Did sony just give hombrew developers the green light to develop software for the PSPgo?

by rathalos - 2009-06-25 06:36
Finally!

they finally learned that homebrew owns the psp!or could it just be that their trying to make off extra money with some crappy apps.....

homebrew devs, yes, but..

Only if you buy the SDK.

Which is good, there are plenty of homebrew devs who would be willing to buy the SDK (or borrow it from a friend) in order to program apps for the PSP Go.

Smart move, Sony, embracing homebrew from the beginning, so maybe you won't have to get locked into the crack - patch - crack - patch cycle that dominated the PSP 1000-3000 models.

It sure must have been a lot of work, trying to counter us every time we found a way around your security..

What about...

ISO, CSO, PS1 Eboots, will they work??

Sony

SUCKS DONKEY BALLS

by hush404 - 2009-06-25 08:47
interesting at least

To see Sony open like this. Guaranteed the system will still be locked down as much as they can muster - but maybe they've just gone and come to the conclusion that it's going to happen anyway, why not allow an environment where all the kewl homebrew stuff, minus cracked PSP games, will be made available. Thus, you get a much more robust platform, a stronger community supporting that platform and less of a reason for people to hack their PSPs.

Uhm

Homebrew hasn't been selling the PSP.

Alek has estimated that a maxium of 8 % of the PSP owners are using CFW (and he HAS got the right data)

by icypsp - 2009-06-25 11:22
True true

No Gravity made its way to an official game after evolving from a way advance homebrew game.

just dont support crap like

a flash light app

a iLoose weight app

a 100 games in one app

or a fart noise app

lmao stupid random app store apps

put some effort in this stuff.

quality not numbers lol

by VashioKun - 2009-06-25 11:35
lol

And like 50% of the owners don't even use their psp. I have many friends that have a psp and don't even use it. I never used it until I put CFW on mine.

...

Just because you have an SDK doesn't mean your app/game/whatever will automagically be approved by SCE for distribution (and thus signed by them so it can run on retail units.)

Insult?

Apparantly Donkey Balls are a delicacy in some countries, So i dunno is that an insult or a gastronomic tip?

by enigmaticdude - 2009-06-25 14:42
think about it

Homebrew developers can share the SDK. I am pretty sure that some homebrew developers talk to each other, obviously.

@ cory

Sony does have to approve the software before it is released. They won't take something like an emulator but they will take something like a fan made game like the individual homebrew games.

I am guessing that they are going to have an app store similar the Ipod's App store but through the PSN.

It would be nice

I would totally pay to have PEPviewer finished (it's an image viewer that went dark in 2007) or to have PSPtube on my legal-PSP.

by lunas - 2009-06-25 18:30
Great now they can suck a pineapple too...

Makes me wonder if they are even aware of the world around them. A price drop on the sdk doesn't mean *****. Just means more developers to make the same game over and over. Just like the apple app store...
