Shinji Hashimoto: FFXIII worth playing for a decade, Square Enix downloadable games on hold |
Ó
Shinji Hashimoto of Square Enix gave quite a meaty lump of information to Japanese magazine "Nintendo Dream". The whole interview focused much on the whole concept of the Final Fantasy franchise. We know that the epic RPGs stand alone with each installment, but how come there are other spin-offs for certain games?
In a nutshell, you can basically subdivide the FF franchise into four different developing groups: a) Fabula Nova Crystallis (FFXIII), b) the Ivalice Alliance (Tactics, FFXII, Revenant Wings), c) Crystal Chronicles (Nintendo-exlusives), and d) FFXI. Each of these major groups develop their own sub-installments. Like how the FFVII team further developed other spin-offs like Crisis Core for the PSP, the Advent Children movie, etc.
But as for specifics on the more current games being developed, Hashimoto had quite a bold (albeit reassuring) statement about how they created FFXIII:
Different from something like VII, which we expanded upon afterwards, with Fabula Nova Crystallis FFXIII, we've thought about an expansive world setting from the start. Under the idea of wanting everyone to be sucked into the world for 10 years, we're preparing a number of categories.
So they have further plans eh? After giving that statement, he even compared FFXIII to other series like Harry Potter, Star Wars, or LOTR. Seems like there's nothing that'll stop Final Fantasy from being final. Or is there? On the subject of bringing the early FF games onto services such as Virtual Console, it seems as if that idea is being set aside to the back burner:
We feel that the Japanese game market still requires [physical] media. Also, FF and Dragon Quest are played by a wide range of users, from children to adults, so there are limitations when you consider the problems that we would have with billing systems.
Physical media huh? In short, they won't make the previous games available as downloads, but something physical. Like... The UMD. Final Fantasy I & II are being released for the PSP, after all, and not ported onto an online service.
There's lots of big stuff in the full interview, which IGN had kindly translated for everyone. More talk about chocobos, potions, Dragon Quest, Square Enix parties, and "a Final Fantasy not known by anyone." Take a look, just right behind the Read link below!

FHURSTH!!!
nice...
so long and so boring who the hell cares this game is the number 1 worst game of all time
might of been good with VII-IX...even FFX. but why do this for a game that most people get bored of before they finish or dont care much about the story D:
let's jump on the bandwagon and say the game sucks and is boring before it's even released. Good job guys.
Mass Effect sucks too! I don't even need to play the game. I can tell because aliens are boring. Man, these forums are flooded with children. They shouldn't even be commenting on this game, because they're probably not old enough to buy it. T for teens, kids.
You're the idiot who dislikes God of war because you haven't played it, right? :P Until you actually play some decent games, please refrain from offering your opinion on them. :D
Hey, does a long game worth playing, right?
if you've played every final fantasy game like i have, you'd appreciate this stuff more.
ff games get really old esp 7. why do people like it so much?? the graphics were horrible, i played the game for 5 mins and my eyes started to bleed.like the peoples arms were cyclinders and balls. plus the game play sucked.
Final Fantasy 12 sucks. Even though it had good ratings i dont see how the battles play out better unless your someone who plays mmorpg. The battles look stupid and are boring, not epic; I mean if you still have to wait your turn whats the point of the system being like that unless your playing a mmorpg. Plus no one has any outstanding attributes. Don't get me started with the homosexual look of 12 which is far worst than any other ff ive ever seen. I think Square-Enix is messing up with the ff series and i hope they don't mess up these next games.
the game doesn't suck, you do. You can't handle a game were you have to unravel the story, and build up your character from nothing. Or your just not an RPG fan.
Your *****ing about a game that came out for the first PS console? OMFG!! if you compare games from back then to those of today of course they look horrible, dude get a grip.
If someone says this game sucks, it is because they suck at real rpgs. If the franchise is already on installment XIII and has many spin offs don't you think SE is doing something right. FF games+hours and hours of challenging fun.
i wish they would stick to what works and make 1 world for 1 gamenot have 1 world for 10 years on a side note they should stop with all of thease spin-offs
Today I saw came upon a wee lil' grasshopper. It was so cute, hopping to an fro, and generally doing those things that grasshoppers do. Then I ate it. -Mrow
u people who talk about ff12 and say it sucks u suck and arent used to real time battles dont even bother getting 13 because if u had a hard time with 12 youll have even more problems with 13 the old ff7 through ffx2 battle system is gone so stop dwelling in the past get over it fool!!!!!!
SD + Super Deformed, it was popular because it made it easier to express the characters emotion with exaggeration
