The much-talked about PS3-PSP connection - Image 1

There's so much speculation right now on how Sony will handle the connectivity between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. The recent interview with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) VP of Publisher and Developer Relations Zeno Colaco sheds a lot of light regarding the matter.

To begin with, Colaco said that the PSP is actually doing good but people tend to compare its performance with the success of the PSOne and PS2. The vice president commented that people always forget that they were new to the handheld space. Concerning main competitor Nintendo DS, Colaco admitted that the PSP was somehow behind it,

Nintendo can take a lot of credit for launching a different type of product for a slightly different consumer and it's done exceptionally well. I think some of the DS games have been fantastic. Where in hindsight we've been short is one or two killer apps that would have been able to drive PSP forward.

Despite that, the official still believes that the business model being employed by Sony with the PSP remains very strong. That said model is actually 20:80 meaning 80% of business will come from the games of the third party developers and publishers. The remaining 20%, needless to say, will come from Sony itself.

When asked about the handheld's future, Zeno Colaco mentioned that the technology behind the PSP is still top-end so that doesn't need to be addressed. The future, the official added, belongs to what the PSP can do in conjunction with the PS3 and the PlayStation Network,

I think the downloadable element of PSP will be a key factor as we move into 2008; connectibility with PlayStation 3 is a key factor. We've soft pedalled this to date, because we had to concentrate on PlayStation 3, but the PlayStation Network isn't just about PS3 going forward.

Sony I hope some how you hear this. I do not own a PS3. I can't afford a PS3. I bought a PSP because I am a adult gamer that works. I spend most of my time in bank lines, grocery store lines, and taking my children to the park. We want applications and games period. Nobody cares about the PS3. The future of the PSP is making better games and applications like a PDF reader.

» You are not the Majority

I'm an adult gamer also but I own a PS# XBOX 360 and I'm planing on getting the Wii. Yes and I also have the PSP. The remote play app is great, especially since they added the online function. I can be anywhere in the world with a wireless internet conection and access the content on my PS3 photos videos and music not to mention the web browser. I have a160 GB hardrive on my PS3 and a 60 GB HDD external Hard Drive connected to my PS3. That gives me the liberty to have tons of content on my PS3 which I can access from anywhere.

by toby - 2007-06-06 04:10
» because...

Look, sony were not taking remote play seriously because without support for games/dvd's/blu-ray movs theres no practical use for it. Most people have a decent size memory stick for their psp (im talking 1gb+) and you can fit most of the content you want to look at on that. Also when I'm out and about I mostly dont have internet access

» also

I make time for my wife son and both of them are gamers also. It's a beautiful thing actually!!! Anyways, my point is that interconnectivi ty is very important and the PS3 is more than just a gaming console. I use it every day even if I don't play any games. I browse the web on my TV with it, I have all my music on it and all my videos, home videos included. Plus I can stream from my PC or Laptop to it. It's the perfect media center and I love it. The only thing missing is killer apps and they are well on their way. Heavenly Sword, Killzone, Lair, etc....... My 360 is great but I prefer my PS3 a hundred times over. I've had my 360 longer than I've had my PS3 and I own a lot more games for my PS3. Three store bought games and about eight downloadable games. And to stay in subject I've also downloaded games for my PSP through the Playstation store.

» try harder sony

The only reason sony wants PSP-PS3 connectivity is to try to make up a reason to get a PS3. Just like the PSone emulator for PSP which sony wanted to require a PS3 to download games for. Thank god Dark Alex came along with his custom firmware to allow people to rip their own PS1 games to play on PSP.

PSP to PS3 connectivity is useless, one of the first applications they could come up with is a rearview mirror for the lackluster F1 game, and even that worthless feature was scrapped.

Can't you think of anything useful to use that for sony?

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-06 04:27
» agree with Jabbar

Even if the PSP and PS3 were the same price I think I'd rather have the PSP with homebrew. Besides, the PSP with it's "inferior" 333mhz processor has far better applications and emulators than the PS3's linux and 3.2 ghz processor. I still don't understand what the hell Ken Kutaragi was thinking when he designed the PS3. Was he trying to lose his job?

» I wonder

Hi Mister Common Sense,

I wonder what beef you have with the PS3 that you take the trouble of bashing each and every article that has to do with it. Even though Developers, Tech critics and others may be impressed with something the PS3 has or may be about to do, for you somehow, this always falls short, and usually, you try to compare this to the 360 (which, in my own opinion, is not the Godsend you make it out to be). I admit though, this time I can't find any mention of the 360 in your post.

For the record, let me state that I own both a PS3 (bought Feb 2007) and a 360 (bought Mar 2006). I also own a PSP (bought sometime in 2005). I admit to being slightly biased in favour of the PS3, although this bias has come about of trying out both consoles (I don't mean to say that my 360 has had any tech issues - it's working just fine, and I do have several games for it, incl Kameo, PDZ, PGR3, Oblivion, Dead Rising, GRAW, it's just that the PS3 impressed me more with its capabilities). From your posts, however, it usually appears as if you have not so far bought a PS3, but still try to appear knowledgeable regarding its faults.

As far as this habit of yours is concerned, I can only say - Don't knock it till you try it (with an open mind, and not a preconceived notion).

If I offended you, I apologize, but after seeing YOU BASH THE PS3 on almost EVERY SINGLE PS3 ARTICLE, usually WITHOUT ANY VALID REASON, I just had to say this.

If I'm wrong about anything, please feel free to correct me.

Regards,

MTK

1st of all to say home brew for PSP is better in any way to an open source platform such as linux says you know nothing whatsoever about linux.

The PS3 can operate as a fully functional desktop computer while the PSP strides hard to be a very poor PDA.

Not to put the PSP down as I do own one (3.40 OE) and also a PS3.

Just sick of seeing this jackass post stupid untrue ***** which is rather amusing considering his name.

Cant you think of anything more useful then spending your time on PS3 sites bashing it and sony products Mister Common Sense?

» Did someone just call me a moron?

It's cool what the PS3 can do. I wish I had one. To make myself clear, I just can't afford it. All that I am saying is that sony doesn't need to realy on the connectivity of the PS3 to PSP for the PSP to be successful. I bought a PSP, Sony should respect that. Sony should make more things for PSP, that is the key to success for the PSP. Why do they think that connecting one expensive piece of equipment with another make one or the other more successful? Most of us do not have that much money. I am a multimedia designer, I get paid everyday to do cool stuff. Sony needs to put people like me in a little room and let us do what we do. I personally can crank out cool stuff to be used on the PSP daily. Sony has too many resources not to be using them. It is really sad that they are so stupid. Stop trying to dupe me into buying a PS3, it cost waaaay toooo much money. Sony should stop ignoring those of us who own a PSP. If Sony wants my money I am more than willing to give it to them. But I own a PSP, not a PS3.

by NateD0gg - 2007-06-06 08:40
» PS3 OVER PRICED

How about making the PS3 affordable to the average consumer then maybe we can make use of those features? I own a psp at 3.40OE but I would not drop $700 on a PS3 cause its totaly not worth it. Slash the price in 1/2 and then i can be sold. Until then, i just dropped $900 on a amazing Samsung HD LCD TV for my affordable 360. :)

by Bizarro World - 2007-06-06 09:18
» I must live there...

Cause I don't hear people talking about the horribly expensive iPod, or how horribly expensive a decent refrigerator is, or how terrible it is that dishwashers are soooo expensive. Honestly 600 dollars is less than I paid for either one of my LCD's. Don't hear a lot of complaints about those damn expensive LCD's though. As a tech purchase, the PS3 and PSP have both been well worth it, as their functionality *increases* over time. Also, Jabbar, you are a moron, because Sony has talked about PSN access without the PS3, but that's not what they are talking about *in this article*. The article is about what Sony said regarding PS3-PSP connectivity, but the end of the quote clearly states: "the PlayStation Network isn't just about PS3 going forward." So really, you are being a moron... they just addressed your concern and you didn't even notice.

» 333mhz better than 3.2ghz --this is Common Sense?

In another post up above, Mister Common Sense not only raves again about homebrew on PSP, but also makes the absurd statement that somehow the 333mhz PSP is the bomb because its so much more flexible. I have had PSP and PS3 since their releases, and I even have a 360. I even admit to having spent several months at the PSP start fascinated with the homebrew concept. ...But that fad passed. Besides, it's truly a ridiculous notion to buy a $250 piece of hardware (at least, that's what I paid) and not run new games in the hopes of playing Doom or PacMan or a neat but ultimately lame homegrown PDA app. For me, with the firmware v3.50 PSP and v1.80 PS3, the promise of both of these machines has just been fulfilled. --As well as a great hint at what's to come. Being able to play media from your PS3 hard drive anywhere in the world (wiFi) via your PSP? --Awesome. Beats homebrew any day. But, since the 'Common Sense' bashing was on PS3, I think it should also be said that --as cool as PSP has become now-- the PS3 is even better. I've owned some cool consoles over the time, but PS3 is definitely the King of Consoles in every way (from form to function), and it just gets better with every firmware release. The knockout games are just around the corner, but it's also time people stop disparaging what's out already. There are some mighty fine titles already available for PS3.

» i dont understand

What i dont get is that people say the ps3 is expensive. I own one and its very affordable and with peace of mind. im not bashing and please excuse me if im offending anybody but that was not my intention. I did a caculation and i found out that the 360 is more that a ps3, first the 360 elite cost 479.99, plus if you want wifi add 59.99, then if you want hd movies add 199.99, plus add warranty (this varies by store) that almost adds up to 800 dollers!!! a ps3 cost 599.99 that already includes this. Im just making a point. Plus a ps3 is better than buying rims or stupid crap like that.

Yeah, some people are so stupid... Actually Xbox 360 costs more than that if you add Xbox live which costs 79 bucks a year (i think).

We need more of this "I think the downloadable element of PSP will be a key factor as we move into 2008"

and less of this "connectibility with PlayStation 3 is a key factor.".

Even they agree with what I am saying "We've soft pedalled this to date, because we had to concentrate on PlayStation 3".

And last but not least "but the PlayStation Network isn't just about PS3 going forward." does not excist yet.

It's been about three years since the PSP has been out. I'm at work, I can do this all day. I work hard for my money and I have children. If you have Lcd screens and HD TV "Good For You". If I had the money I would have allot of really cool things too. My point is and my only point is "SONY NEEDS TO RESPECT THE FACT THAT I SPENT 300 ON A PSP WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT". I have owned a PS, PS2, and a Sony PDA. All expencive and all with empty promises by Sony. We should demand that this cooperate monster respect our money. By the way I love Mac and they alway just do, they don't give empty promises. And my refrigerator does exactly what was promised keeping my beer cold. Now your yuppie mama is a moron.

The IPod doesn't need to connect to a Mac to do cool stuff. ITunes downloads for free and was up and ready when they launched the product.

So Sony, are you telling me you've been ignoring PSP owners because you were concentrating on the PS3? What the hell? I've paid $250 for one and I'm not going to be supported? You call this customer support? Its not right to try and bribe us to buy a PS3 with a useless gimick. Yes, I might buy a PS3 in the future when I have the money, but what about the PSP? I paid $250 and I better get every cent i spent out of it. More games Sony and better support!

» I call it Sonys bad PR.

"So Sony, are you telling me you've been ignoring PSP owners because you were concentrating on the PS3? "

I don't have a problem with Sony at all (I actually own a PS3 and enjoy it very much) and I don't believe they've gotten a fair shake when people criticize it for having 'no games' (when the 360 was six months old what good games did I have for mine? Ah yes, only COD2.), but they have terrible PR. All companies do dirty things that they don't want their customers to know. Sony's PR is just stupid enough to reveal their plans to people.

» typical Sony...

there are trying it with all ways to get people buy a PS3.

I mean, I also think the PS3 is great, but it's just not affordable for me. The problem is, that the price can't drop anymore. the Price already reached it's limits. Sony already gets less 1$ for every sold PS3. Sony is getting the money from rights and sold games for the console. For Example just one fact: The PS3 IS the cheapest Blu-Ray drive that you can buy. Compare other and you will see that you pay

AT LEAST 600$ for a single drive.

Another question is: How many of the PSP users actually have a PS3? I bet that are not even one third....

So I don't understand why Sony is still concentrating on this pretty useless(well, for most useless) function.

Stand alone HD-DVD players are now being sold for $300. I would much rather do that than buy the $200 add on for my 360.

I really can't understand why people think it isn't expensive for what it does. In time the PS3 might be able to do more and cost less. IF it survives that long.

I know why people are upset with Sony. It's not really about the price, I think it's because these bitc*es couldn't wait for the ps3 so they spent all thier money on the 360 lol. Now u know you should've waited but u just couldn't keep your hands out your pocket. So STFU.

» i still would lke more psp firmware upgrades....

dont get me wrong, i like the ps3. I also have more than enough money to purchase one.... Yet im really disappointed with the games(resistanc e is not my cup of tea and that only leaves Motorstorm-which alone wont make me buy a ps3) . Most games i like are also on the 360 (GtA4, Assasin's Creed, Oblivion). In fact the 360 has better games than the ps3. I mean u have gears of war(i played it at my friend's house and its awesome!!) and halo 3 looks amazing. Theres also fable 2, which is another great game that im keeping my eye on(sadly its also exclusively for 360). so u might be wondering, why not buy a 360? Well, apart from the games i really dislike the 360 (the interface, xbox live, overpriced accessories, Microsoft, etc). Yet i just heard a really horrible rumor stating that FF13 might not be a ps3 exclusive. If thats true then ill have to get a 360, no matter how much i dislike it... so id like sony to focus on my lovely psp so that i may remain happy and not have to decide which system to purchase (i shall not repeat it again like i did with my gamecube!!!!!)
