SCEE boss: built-in PSP hard drive still possible, PS3 to remain most expensive console, exclusives in terms of relationships (not bribes)

Eurogamer has set up quite a lengthy interview with SCE Europe boss David Reeves. Long as it is, it's quite juicy since he comments (and sometimes refuses to comment) on a lot of the more recent headliners in the industry. Especially after Sony posted their recent financial report, Reeves has quite a lot of things to discuss.

Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation portable consoles - Image 1

PSP's built-in hard drive, yes or no. Well according to Reeves, they're still not ruling out the possibility of bringing in a built-in hard drive for the PSP. Or maybe for the PSP 2, rather? Anyways, here's his full take:

It's still possible, but it's going to be later rather than sooner. [...] It is possible, yes, to have a fixed hard drive or flash memory. But what's happened is, the rate at which memory stick prices have come down have surprised everyone.

With quality comes price - the PS3 is expensive. A lot of critics call out Sony for making the PS3 the most expensive console out in the market. Most people can't help but wonder: maybe giving the PS3 a price cut will help it sell more? It's something David Reeves agrees with, to an extent, but he thinks the high price for the PS3 is staying that way for a while:

I think it will, yes. I'm not saying there are going to be any price cuts at all in the short term or the medium term. I'm not saying we don't need to do it - we are expensive. It is possible that as the cost [of manufacturing] comes down, we will be able to do it. [...]

The price will affect [the consumer's] decision. Yes, if I haven't got that much money to spend, I will go for, let's say, the green machine. Because the salesman will say, "Well, it's got all the games," and he wants to sell that machine.

But there are people who come in having done their research, thinking, 'PS3 has got all the games, it's free to go online, it's got a Blu-ray player. I know I'm not going to have to ring up the customer careline saying I've got three red lights.'

We recognised that those numbers would go down because we did not drop the price. But we reached the targets we expected to reach under those assumptions.

The last bit where he talks about "those numbers" are referring to the decline in PlayStation hardware sales, as indicated in yesterday's financial report.

Exclusives - we're not paying for it! So, you think Sony would be hounding Konami to keep MGS4 an exclusive? Well, according to Reeves, the decision is really going to be up to Konami. In fact, rather than spend money to keep exclusives, he'd put that money into more useful things like their own IPs. To him, having an exclusive is due to strong relationships built with the developer.

We're not going to fall over ourselves just to try and keep [MGS] exclusive. We have to stand on our own two feet. [...] we would sooner invest that money in two years' time, in having another major IP like Resistance or LittleBigPlanet.

Heavy Rain is a good example. That will be, de facto, an exclusive; we haven't just given them a paper bag full of cash, we've built up a solid, long-term relationship.

On Kaz Hirai's Xbox 360 "lacks longevity" comment. Well, we know the sitch here. Sony's Hirai said this, Microsoft's Greenberg says that... Mud slung across the field, and now what's Reeve's take on the matter?

I'm not going to comment on that. I simply don't know what their plans are. I'm not going to be as arrogant as to comment on either Nintendo or Xbox 360. I don't think [what Kaz Hirai said was arrogant]. He was probably misquoted, because I don't think Kaz would say that.

Well, I suppose this has been pretty long enough. Let all that sink in... take a deep breath.... and comment. If you want to check out the full 3-page interview in Eurogamer, just head to the Via link below.

i think its just facts. i was one of those people i did a good year worth of research b4 i bought my first next-gen (current gen really) and *drum roll* .......... i bought a ps3. like he said free online, blue ray and little things like rechargable controllers, bluetooth, the web browser, wifi, mem-card readers, and of course psp support (

the red ring of death really does scare people it, of course its gonna be a factor when buying

» Hmmm

While it is true that M$ paid for some of its exclusives, it is also a fact that many developers have not been happy with sony not giving then enough support on things such as a better developer kit and so on.

Therefore, small time developers prefer to go with xbox360/Wii when developing a game due to lower production cost and easier developing.

There are a bunch of small time japanese developers making games for the 360/Wii right now(Though many of then won't come out overseas.)

on anything mobile is a bad idea.

You dropped your PSP ? Chances are your drive is dead.

SSD ? Too expensive.

Decent battery life ? Forget it.

The smart consumer will do research before making a purchase. However the average consumer usually buys whatever is cheaper. Unfortunately this is why the Wii and the 360 continue to outsell the PS3. Some people don't realize that you get what you pay for.

» Different marketing approach

We've all heard the age old arguement about the PS3's extra offerings over the 360. Bluetooth, free online play, HDD, Blu-ray just to name a few. However the average consumer who hasn't done his/her homework probably doesn't know about them and can't justify spending 9 on a console when they could spend less on another with the same games (not including exclusives). Of course exclusive are a major selling point, but Sony should aggressivly market these added bonuses with the PS3. Some people don't know that it plays Blu-ray movies. Some people don't know that online gameplay is free, and all the little extras in that shiny black box.

If the PS3 is worth the 9 price tag and Sony believes then SHOW the people why it is rather than telling them.

by PimpFriedRice - 2009-01-30 06:16

They should have some kind of display demonstrating these features or perhaps displaying them on the box. There's always the magazine and TV ad as well.

by papajag - 2009-01-30 07:00
» Huh...

I actually heard from a friend about the free online gameplay and never noticed on the box that it has it. They should have it right in the middle of the box "FREE ONLINE GAMING". Look it's even attractive in the middle of this paragraph.

» @death

Same here. I went online and read all these fanboy fights to find out which is better. Of course I have both systems but I went for the PS3 first because of all the little things and the free online gaming. If I didn't find out about the 360 mods I wouldn't have bought one until it was $99.

Good job, Sony. There is no reason for you to be lowering the prices. If anything, you should be raising them. The PS3 is an amazing system and costs a very lot of money to make, it's not right that you loose money on each puchase made because a bunch of idiot dropouts complain the system is too expensive. If you think the PS3 is too expensive then get a crappy 360 and continue your job at McDonald's.

by Torch - 2009-01-30 07:48

The PS3 has no affordable games in India, if you know what I mean.

@papajag

Shame there are NOT enough games that actually play on your Friends PS3's Free Online Network.

Its all very well slagging the XBOX360 off, when your own machine has only 5 Exclusive games on it, in the Top 30 Games in my Local Games store, all the other were on XBOX360 as well, So in my opinion don't bother getting a PS3 yet, not worth it, drop the price again Sony and release Killzone 2 and Gran Turismo 5(Full Version) and just maybe i will get one. LOL .....and pigs might fly

"Shame there are NOT enough games that actually play on your Friends PS3's Free Online Network..."

You can say the same thing about 360. They have just as many exclusives but half of them are RPG's, than everything else is cross platform.

However the Exclusives PS3 have play better on line with 32 and 64 player online.....xbl will never break 16 player.

Ntm you only have to buy the system once. I used to say that RROD was BS, until it happened to me and 3 of my friends....I bought a PS3 after that, but my friends bought 360's again, 1 of wich RROD'd again....

by papajag - 2009-01-30 08:29
» @KingPepper

I actually have one although it did sound like I didn't. I was referring to how I found out about the free online on the PS3. There are almost the same amount of online games for the PS3 as 360. If you check those top 30 maybe you'll realize that many of those games are on the PS3 as well. It's just that if you live in America more people have a 360.

by Cortador - 2009-01-30 08:45
» @ Shatterdome

Your friends must be pretty dumb to be rebuying xboxes when they got the 3 years warranty thing.

Anyways, xbox live can break the 16 player limit, just take a look at Frontlines: Fuel of War.

Next time do a little research before trying to impose facts on other people.

» tbh

I'm waiting for GT5 before I pick up a PS3.

I have a Wii already because we have kids in the house, and you really shouldn't knock it because all in all it's actually a very fun little system. Gimmicky of course, but that's no bad thing - and it's a very accessible unit all in all.

Serious gamers go for the X360/PS3 of course, but if you enjoy casual gaming then there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Wii at all and it's very short sighted to look down on people who indulge in one.

In fact, I'd call you a fanboy rather than a true gamer if you're going to 'dis a system simply because you think it's a kiddy one.

on the PS3 is a software problem, not a hardware problem unlike the MANY errors (so many that I can be bothered to reel off all those E numbers) that the 360's suffer from.

I agree, the Wii is a great machine, just not for major games. It's fun and nice for off story games (like spinoffs) but I would not like to see a sequal to a PS3 or 360 game done on the Wii.

i know exactly what you mean. mind you at my time of purchase i was unaware of these "features". now tht i am a owner of both tho, i must admit i am attempting to access them myself.

however i will state that my ps3 was worth every penny at launch (my 360 was free)

as with all the world crisis, if you cant afford it dont buy it.

i myself can only buy 1 or 2 games a year for my ps3 and i research carefully which i should buy to justify my purchase.

i have gta4 and uncharted both of which are very good games.if you dont have much money after buying a ps3 then psn games is the way to go.

heck if you cant buy a ps3 then stick with your pc and just play free mmo games.

and thank you mr reeves for not being an arrogant *****, the interview is a good read article unlike those mudslingings.

i also think those mudslingings were just misinterpreted quotes. just what some sites needs for publicity popularity and webclicks.

well this is a conversation on Binary and his friend.

Binary's friend: yoooo we kicked ass last night on ???? game.

Binary: hell yeah it was fun.

Binary's friend: so y did u have to leave so early man.. we had another challenge against a different clan.

Binary: yo it's not my fault man... my 360 said i had to clean the disg, and then it received the rrod.. see you online in a few weeks..

Binary's friend: oh man, i know what ur saying.. remember i didnt log on for like a month 2 months ago? yeah i got my rrod then..

i'm not trying to say anything bad about u owning the 360, but just that its not easy when u get the rrod.. i got it 2 times on 1 360.. i lost my thermal paste so i am way too lazy to go looking for it again.. my 360 currently has the rrod and I have 30+ games on it to play.. i couldnt play them for the past month.. i def admit that I wouldve had much more fun on my 360 beacuse of all the games I have pirated. So right now i'm just an average gamer with a few ps3 games which is still very fun... but i'm dying to fix my 360 now.. so its not easy.. even if u send it back to microsoft, u r going to have to wait.. and I remember that when cod4 first came out, me and any of my friends would hate to wait even for like 2 days because we had to keep up on who could get to the next prestige then to the 10th prestige first...lol..

Umm....Have you played GT:Prologue? It is pretty slick, and is being updated often with new cars and tracks. Its like it's building up to be GT5 so you get to see it growing. And it's more then enough game to be sold on its own. Although GT5 will be crazy if they do everything they want to with it, including 3D.
