SCEA: third-party exclusivity is so last gen, Microsoft 'writes cheques' |
As if following up on his previous statement, John Koller still remains positive that their first-party line-up is strong enough to wash over third-party non-exclusives. Dude, with an internal first-party studio group that huge, it's hardly a surprise.See, he thinks that exclusives - at least in the third-party sense - are a thing of the past and that they don't matter in this current cycle of gaming history. What matters now are your first-party titles.
Speaking to vg247, PSP brand manager and SCEA big wig John Koller explains this scenario as such:
Exclusivity is something that doesnÂ’t truly exist in this cycle. What does exist is first-party product. ThatÂ’s your exclusive product.
Exclusivity in the last console was a much different proposition, because developers would have smaller development costs, and they wouldnÂ’t necessarily feel the need to advertise that across all platforms. At that time we had a Grand Theft Auto exclusive, we had EA Sports at the beginning of PS2, we had Final Fantasy. And then we had a tremendous line-up of first-party games, that started off with the Jak & Daxters but went to the SOCOMs.
We go to the next gen and Microsoft has the same thing. So you either have your first-party line-up, or you write cheques, and you need to buy that down.
True enough, their first-party lineup for the PSP and PS3 is looking great. And commenting on Microsoft's never-quite-confirmed habit of having to "buy exclusives," Koller adds:
Microsoft has had a much more lenient policy to writing cheques than we do.
We donÂ’t feel the need to write cheques necessarily with every publisher, like they did with the Lost and Damned and some other titles, because we feel very strongly in our first-party line-up.
I think itÂ’s safe to say that weÂ’d put our first-party line-up against anyoneÂ’s, and Microsoft and other manufacturers probably lead a little bit when theyÂ’re writing cheques about how they feel about their own internal line-up.
This actually somewhat echoes now-former SCEE boss David Reeves' earlier statement about feeling confident that they don't need to resort to bribery to get exclusives. As Reeves put it, exclusives are gained by establishing good relationships with the third-party devs (his example was Konami), and not determined by "giving them a paper bag full of cash."

It's been shown by Square Enix with Final Fantasy and Namco-Bandai with Tekken that in this generation third party exclusivity is almost non-existent. Sony has been doing a great job with their first party developers. There are plenty of high quality games both sequels and new IPs for the PS3 that I believe give it a chance at longevity. The 360 has been doing well obviously but its slowing down drastically and now relies mostly on exclusive DLC, price cuts, timed exclusives and sequels of games from last generation that were beforehand only exclusive to Sony. The only new IPs that come to mind when I think of the 360 this generation are Gears, Dead Rising (not even exclusive anymore) and Left 4 Dead. This compared to Sony's InFamous, Uncharted, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet , Valkyria Chronicles, MAG, Folklore, etc. The PS3 may have gotten off to a poor start this generation, but its future looks a lot brighter than the 360s right now.
Can't we all just get along?
This came to mind when you listed all those games. Do people just play video games all day or something? Like when people complain about there being no PSP games... There are plenty of decent games; even if there were about 10 or so, how fast would you get through them?
My point is, I have a bunch of 360 games I haven't finished and don't have the time to. I don't look for new games all the time, so the 360 games out are fine with me.
:)
if theirs no exclusives then people will buy the cheapest system. Plus this amazing lineup that they talk about feels like they are gonna strech out these tittles throughout the ps3's lifespan i mean look how long killzone 2 took and now god of war 3 which im pretty sure is coming out next year. Feels like one good exclusive once a year. I think sony's getting tired of microsoft getting all the good stuff. Remember guys everything has a price and sony just doesnt want to spend money for us the gamers who bought a ps3.
its like he's saying "we dont care about third-party because they suck compared to our first-party devs and we wont pay any money to them because we had ONE FULLLLLLLLLLLLL LL
year to make a better console than xbox and we didn't take the chance because we were over-confident"
Yeah, stupid people just look at the price tag,
smart people look at the functions and after which they look at the price tag.
"if theirs no exclusives then people will buy the cheapest system."
No third party exclusives! not, no exclusives
Sony supports "us the gamers" well.
Look at Killzone getting free DLC, which would be $10 on XBL...or more.
Well he has a point...of the 8 games I have, only 2 are 3rd party (UT3 and SF4) the others are first party. Then only games i'm looking forward to this year are all first party from Sony....across both consoles...
Wait, so you're using a one off example to say that Sony are heavenly and MS are the devil?
Paying for costumes in Little Big Planet, paying for "booster packs" for Warhawk. They're no better.
Also-
"Yeah, stupid people just look at the price tag,
smart people look at the functions and after which they look at the price tag."
Which is why I bought a 360 and a bluray player for my PC. All together it cost less than a PS3.
This all shows the Ps3 is just over spec'd and over priced when games are designed for the 360 then the Ps3 version is almost identical, so the extra Ps3 power and Blu-ray disk space is just pointless, it all shows Sony had it easy with the Ps1 and Ps2 but when they have genuine competition now from MS and Nintendo their arrogance shows through, and they only really begining to learn from their mistakes.
But I also have Valkyria Chronicles(Sega ,) Armored Core 4(From Software,) Armored Core For Answer(From Software,) Devil May Cry 4(Capcom,) Grand Theft Auto(R*,) Stranglehold(Mi dway,) and then some.
I only have one first party title that I had to import because you can only buy it on the PSN in the US(and I hate buying data.) Siren: Blood Curse(called Siren: New Translation with the Chinese version, but English.)
The other Sony first party title I'm going to pick up is Demon's Souls which is from both Sony and From Software. It has full English translation, but it hasn't been released to the US and I doubt it'll ever get released to the US(Chinese version has fully English translation as well.)
If you ask me though. I don't think it matters if you own a PS3 or a 360. I used to own both but ended up selling my 360. The reason for this is that every game that's came out on one console has recently came to the other console. I prefer the PS3 controller and the fact that I'll eventually be able to play most every PSP game wirelessly without having to invite the people over through the PS3/PSP ad-hoc party makes the PS3 definitely the one I'm keeping over the 360.
Now there are some features the PS3 has the 360 doesn't but there are features the 360 has the PS3 doesn't. Sony is continuously updating the firmware though. So just like 360 gamers, PS3 gamers will soon be able to listen to music while in game and will also be able to voice chat while playing a different game(two features I liked on the 360.)
But regardless. The main point is that every third party game is more than likely going to go on both systems so really doesn't matter which system you go for. Go with the system that has the features you like best.
how about the free themes, online play, or even letting 3rd parties offer free things (Unreal Tournament 3) while microsoft refuses to let the free Unreal Tournament 3 updates be released and the free Team Fortress 2 updates. The only reason they even allowed Burnout Paradise to release free dlc was because that's a triple a title that would have been better on the PS3.
ha ha!, ha ha!, hahahahahahhaha hahahahahahahah a!!!!!!
/calms down from the stomachache produced by so much laughter
To David Reeves:
YOU BRAINDEAD MORON!!!!. Exclusives are the only thing that makes a system worth it, DUH!!!, My favorite console of all time is the PS2, wanna know why?, because of the awesome and exclusive games it had.
Now I have an Xbox 360 because I got it for cheap and most sequels of the exclusives I liked from the PS2 are being released for both PS3 and 360, and THEY LOOK THE SAME. Also I got it softmoded a week ago, so no gain for any company.
Learn to keep your customers happy or get ready for this kind of crap
/Imitates David Reeves gay voice
"Oh, third party exclusivity is so last gen"
/end imitation
Why the hell do you think the PS2 is still selling, eh???
Then I wonder why everyone agrees that KZ2 is the best looking shooter ?
You didn't read huh? He's talking about 1st party exclusive and not 3rd party exclusive. 3rd party exclusive only do well if it's only on 1 console, but most exclusive that was on the 360 are going to the PS3 as well.
No offense Link, but your comments always come off as extremely biased. Maybe you should keep your comments to your self.
you just insulted the guy but completely agreed with everything he said. xD I really think you should give this artivle another read
No, people just like complaining all the time. I can only guess they do it because it makes them look "more critical" than "those other stupid people" or something.
@thefinalhero: Well said.
Reading through the comments and replies I came across some instances of "making the customers happy" and "what the customers want" etc. The thing is, if every console/game developer would take MS's approach, then we would NEVER EVER get any innovation in Video games. We would all play the seventh reiteration of some 1st person shooter which would have only evolved in terms of graphic and performance. And this is would definitely not make me, as a gamer, happy.
MS is investing all its money in "writing cheques", to use Koller's words, while Sony (and for that matter also Nintendo) is investing in new, innovative, even experimental stuff, which, IMHO, is the way to go, as its the only way gamers will see genuine evolution in Video games. And first party exclusitivity is just a welcome side-effect of that.
Considering the only good games on the PS3 are sequels, really, Sony isn't investing anymore in 'Innovative' gaming than anyone else. LittleBigPlanet aside (Which in the end is just a ripoff of all those PC *Maker titles.) name me one new innovative IP on the PS3 that was any good.
I can think of plenty of interesting 360 XBLA games, even a few decent standard release 360 games that were innovative for what they were.
You should check your bias at the door before spouting things. PS3 has some solid games, but all the good ones are merely sequels. KZ2, MGS4, GoW3, Uncharted 2. (Uncharted is just a male centered Tomb Raider, I'm sorry, it isn't innovative, creative or new in the least.)
Sony doesn't 'write cheques' because they did that in the PSX and PS2 era, this cycle they dont have a big enough installment base for any devs to be completely willing to do as such. If the PS3 userbase was larger, you damn well better believe Sony would be tossing money left and right to get exclusives, like they always have. They can't, so they play it off as unimportant.
I'd like to see you name a few ''innovative'' games from the 360 before bashing his comment, the PSN has them to you know flower, echochrome, noby noby boy, Pixel Junk, just to name a few, and the 360 has Braid and Geometry Wars, also mentioning the ps3's only good games are sequels isn't correct, Valkyria Chronicles, Little Big Planet (you say its been done before, but has it been done as easily and accessible as this game?), and Folklore just to name a few, i'm not going to bash on any console just letting you know how bias your opinion is also.
I would like to hear of these innovative 360 games as well....I can basically guarentee you they are a "rip-off" of some type of game made in the past....
I love have you can even write LBP off as being a clone of "maker games" on PC....when it's won so many awards for innovation and originality it's not funny.....
Also there are plenty of PSN games that are original.....Flower, noby noby boy, basically all the eyetoy games and interactive art.....Then there are more comming up....Fat Princess, Heavy Rain.....but I am sure you can draw parralels or similarities to plenty of other games if you really want to.....because you always can..
I still don't like his statement. It just reeks of BS like Reeves. The problem with this notion is great DLC like Lost and Damned(despite your thoughts on GTA4) which actually is pretty good DLC for 20 dollars on XBLM, will never make it's way on PS3 owners, or even DLC for PS3 owners version. And then they feel shafted or in this case left out. I see nothing wrong with spending money on some exclusive DLC content. Sometimes you need to step up or man up and admit your method just isn't cutting out and go do it for the good of the fans. In this case spend some money for exclusive DLC.
I'm aware I made the decision of picking the PS3 version, especially since it was the only console I had, so I was going to miss out regardless. But hell be considerate of the fans who are now left with nothing but a boring GTA game in their eyes. It's like R* is following Capcom and EA and going for the money instead of their fanbase. But, that wasn't my opinion of GTA4. I found it enjoyable, I just wished they made some dlc available for PS3 users. But comments like this just pisses me off.
... what have you done with the REAL Stealth!???? where is he? you know, the guy i used to see here on QJ way back, when Sony could do no wrong! it's not you surely, you're too unbiased to be that guy. so come on, what have you done with him. >:-(
j/k, i know it's still you, a much more unbiased gamer today, which is great to see. :)
well for some, I'm not the same. I realized I was a major tool. And quite honestly, getting tired of Sony doing bad things. The only thing that sounds remotely plauseable for the reasons is Sony never been in this situation as they this gen. It's more a new feeling, so it's going to take time. And maybe even not paying for exclusive DLC to get back in this "console war" as some fanboys claim. I personally think it's business, MS has made strategic moves, while sony has made questionable moves, but hey, I comment them for staying strong, not letting up and actually gaining ground. They're sticking to their guns and pushing the stuff they have even First party exclusives, which imo are better than 360 and Wii's. ;)
I agree with the ps3 having better first party exclusives, i'm not going to deny how much fun it is to play halo 3 online with buddies, and what Nintendo has done with this industry but i'm finding Nintendo games becoming stale
