Until somebody invents a time machine that actually works we have no choice but to take future cues from visionaries and industry insiders. In this case, Tim Closs, chief technical officer of Ideaworks 3D. In an interview, Closs boldly predicted the future of mobile phones and mobile gaming.Right now, he says high-end mobile devices with hardware graphics acceleration have the same performance capability as the DS. According to Closs, the next-gen mobiles will be comparable "maybe to PSP." And there's more. Tim's boss, Thor Gunharsson looked at his crystal ball and saw a future where mobile gaming will be more popular than console gaming. Hard to believe?
For now maybe. Mobile games aren't big with core gamers yet. But Tim Closs says once operators find new and easier ways for gamers to buy and download mobile titles then it can happen. Already Nokia and Vodafone are working on it. Naturally, for IdeaWorks 3D's predictions to come true, mobile game development companies must provide more games, better games and more platforms. Electronic Arts is headed there by buying JAMDAT Mobile, Inc. - an American video game publishing company that produces games for mobile phones.
Last month, Electronic Arts proudly announced it sold one million copies of The Sims 2 in Europe. Looks like they're heading there alright.
We're still not 100% convinced mobiles will overshadow handheld gaming consoles just. Why? Because no one we know would answer their mobile when they're in the middle of a game, that's why.
