More from Jaffe: Heartland was a response to President Bush |
Speaking to Newsweek's N'Gai Croal, God of War's David Jaffe, noted several reasons why the planned PSP game Heartland was aborted. The said PSP game was supposed to depict an America invaded by China, and was supposed to feature a Chinese-American faced with heavy moral decisions.
Jaffe explains how Sony's response to the matter was mixed, and how the folks from Sony wished that Jaffe decide to make this game for their big black PlayStation 3. Here's his words:
The game was very much a liberal person's response to the Bush administration and the war in Iraq. When I was entertaining lofty thoughts, the idea was to create an experience that would try to make the players--whom I mostly assumed would be of the Western world--feel what it must be like to have their own homeland occupied by another country. SCEA and I went back and forth over if we would ever say it was CHINA vs. AMERICA as they were a bit worried about being so literal, but that fight had not yet occurred when we pulled the plug.
As for Phil (Harrison, Sony president of worldwide studios), his biggest issue was thinking a game so epic should be on PS3. But I was always pushing for PSP, saying that Heartland should do for the PSP what Halo did for the Xbox. But as you know, Phil's a total supporter of innovation and games as art and so he was more than willing to see if I had anything worthy to say, as well as the talents to say it through the medium.
Other reasons for the cancellation of the game include manpower problems as the WarHawk team kept growing while Jaffe's team kept shrinking. He explains:
If the team would have been the right size, we would still be in production with Heartland today. That was the main reason we killed it, not enough folks to make the game. Granted, I would be 40 pounds overweight again, sad, depressed, and maybe even divorced, as it would have consumed me just like God of War did. But that aside, the main issue that made it clear that we could not continue was that WarHawk kept taking our team members as they were further along in production and were the top priority.
Jaffe then later adds that he could have worked harder in SCEA to get more people for his team, but his "heart was just not in it".
Well, we do hope that this "pop song" phase of game making that David Jaffe finds himself in at the moment becomes rewarding enough for him, so that after all the Calling All Cars and all those "light" games he's into right now, he can find the heart to move back to making those game "operas" that we loved oh so much.

i think it the game sounds interesting and i hope they continue to trying to get the game made.
Yeah, China invading the U.S. sure has a lot to do with the war in Iraq.. Seriously, China invading the U.S. would never work anyways, it would end up in nuclear war most likely.
Bush is evil and sees narrow with that pointy head of his and making the idea of freedom warped and looking bad. He represents pigish ways even his walk shows it.
..ideas like this game can be fight starters too.
So what you're saying is that it WOULD work, but it would end up in nuclear war.
Ooooohh, but they have no problem whatsoever in releasing games where we get to invade another country. Bush would rather have us plugged into games that pre-condition our minds into accepting US imperial terrorism. How many movies in the US depict us fighting in other countries? All this is happening because the average brain-washed American cant seem to figure out that a damaged object CANNOT fall in free-fall speed(No resistance force), if undamaged matter beneath that damaged object is 8 times larger and blocking the entire descention of that damaged object entirely. Everyone: GOOGLE WTC BUILDING 7. LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE HEGELIAN PRINCIPLE!
liberal fool
Screw that liberal crap...and like China could invade us even if they wanted. Yes, I realize the size of their army...soldier wise. However, millions and millions of soldiers don't do them any good if they can't get them over here. Our number of fighter jets, missile defenses, and navy cruisers DWARFS THE SIZE of theirs. Our airforce and navy are tons larger and stronger and higher tech (last I saw, we have nearly 3x the number of aircraft). The old days of raw soldiers are over and the new days are here. Soldiers don't do them anygood if they are shot down in the air or on the water before they can get here. Stupid and not well though out.
Have a bit of imagination.
Why so much drama? Are we supposed to feel sorry for him and his huge bankroll?
I think they should preess on with this game, considering in the rumor mill there is a game based on the Colubine tragedy coming out. THey should look for a gmes publisher here in Canada to put this game out, maybe ole Billy Boy is afraid this would actually happen. C'mon make this game, making it here (Canada) would be perfect cause BUSHHEAD doesn't control us. Thank god!
Hmm. The last time I checked, games were for having fun, not making political statements. Crap like this just pisses me off. I don't want to be preached at when I play a game, I just want to enjoy myself. Sure, I understand every author since Adam has put their own $.02 in their work, but if you're going to do that, at least *TRY* to make it subtle, k?
it does ask a valid question what do most adult gamers think of the war in iraq ?? does the violent nature of current games made them accept the concept of war ?? wonder how gamers think....
Bushhead? Wow, it's not a totalitarian dictatorship here and they could make the game if they want to, Bush isn't stopping them, and I doubt he cares.
As a military man, I've got no fear of it actually happening...I say bring it on baby...at least I'll have home court advantage this time.
It's hilarious how "patriot"'s leftard rant got 0 stars, and the response got 5. I'm pleasantly surprised to find this particular corner of the net full of reasonable people ;-) Seriously, my initial response to this story when it dropped a few days ago was, "he said WHAT???" I can't believe that somebody would draw parallels between a) a liberal democracy toppling a brutal dictator and occupying the country while trying to establish a replacement government, and b) an authoritarian government in charge of a command economy, invading the liberal democracy in (a). Just goes to show you that if you sit in the left-wing echo chamber long enough, you might start to actually *believe* that we're the root of the world's problems.
What the hell are you talking about, you half-baked moron??? Seriously, stop watching 9/11 Conspiracy videos while tripping on acid, you French frog.
Good to see that the liberal American-hating crap isn't tolerated in this post. I hate being preached to by people who'd rather smoke a bong and complain than solve a problem.
