A report by Chris Kohler over at Wired News reveals what Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter thinks about Sony's situation with the PlayStation Portable. Most compelling is Pachter's assertion that Sony doesn't really need to close the two-to-one gap in unit sales between the PSP and the Nintendo DS.

He notes that one has to realize that Nintendo has millions (he says over 20 million) loyal GameBoy Advance owners, and he adds that we all should expect Nintendo to dominate the category that it invented. He notes that Sony is new to the handheld market and has tried to approach it from an older demographic. According to him the gap between the PSP and the DS doesn't matter at all as long as Sony makes money.

As for the issue regarding the PSP's supposed drought in software titles, Michael Pachter says that software is going to grow as the installed base grows. There are really not many more third party games for the DS than for the PSP. He also adds that most third parties are supporting both. He says that as long as the PSP appears to have a growing installed base (even if they are number two) then the growth of the software library should be healthy.

As for Sony's recent announcement of its shift in target market (the new "Dude, Get Your Own" campaign) - which is the 13-17 year-old demographic. Pachter says that while the PSP has to overcome consumer perception, games can go a long way towards shifting that perception.

Finally, when it comes to the rumored new PSP model, Pachter says, and continues to stand by his prediction back in 2005, that it is a certainty. He says that he believes it will happen, he just adds that it's difficult to say if it will happen within 2007.

» sony's strategy

first sony says that they are competing with Nintendo when they ENTER the handheld market. And when they are pwned by Nintendo they are "aimed at a different audience". Gamecube didn't win the previous console war even though it was the cheapest and aimed at kids JUST LIKE THE DS. When will Sony realize its ALL ABOUT THE GAMES?
