Media Molecule already cooking up all-new LittleBigPlanet game (which is not PSP LBP 2009)

"Sackboy: Can I Really Be the Hero?"

Sony's confirmed that LittleBigPlanet will be getting a PSP release. This installment will be developed by a team from Sony Cambridge. But that's not all there is to LBP - no, not by a long shot. Apparently, the guys from the Media Molecule labs are already mulling over an all-new LittleBigPlanet game!

Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra, Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans reveals the following (Editor - had to do some PG-13 bleeping out for some strong language used):

Quite recently actually, we were bouncing ideas around... and then at a certain point, we're like, "We're gonna just take a character, we're just gonna try this direction." And I can't say what it is, but it's really f***ing cool.

It's a quite interesting thing because it was like a magnet. Everyone sort of [joined in] on that thing, then I suddenly saw these people kind of going, "Oh my god, far from being tired of LBP, I suddenly see this untapped potential."

And in ways that hopefully will still be fresh so when it comes back, people won't be like, "Yeah, they just exploited that thing, and it's really f***ing obvious that they would do that." I think LBP is in their future, and hopefully in surprising ways.

[...] We started the company and we called it "creative gaming" rather than [that]... As I said in the talk, there's a very broad church. We can actually pick a different bit of the spectrum.

So, it doesn't have to be LBP-style creativity. It could be musical, or it could be God knows what. I think there's definitely a fixation at Media Molecule around the idea of engaging players creatively.

To reiterate, this new project Alex Evans is talking about here is different from the PSP LBP title scheduled to be released later this year.

You can stop reading there and mull over things for yourself - or you can head on over to the Via link below to read the full interview (it's five huge pages long!) - however, if you want my own two cents here...

First thought for me was like... "Wait, so they're taking a character (a Sackboy, obviously), and will give him a new game?" It kinda reminds me of what NISA did for Prinny. The explosive penguin came from the Disgaea RPG series, and more recently, pulled out of the RPG arena and into his very own side-scrolling adventure spin-off. Imagine - Sackboy: Can I Really Be the Hero?

But LBP is already pretty much side-scrolling to begin with, right? So I was thinking, why not make it reverse, from a side-scrolling platformer to an RPG spin-off? Mario got his own RPG (damn, I miss that game - Geno rocks!), why can't Sony's new mascot have one too? And if they did, in order to continue the whole "Play Create Share" theme (especially the Create part), they could have a pseudo-Dark Cloud-type of RPG!

Of course, I'm just letting my imagination run wild here. I could definitely be wrong, and it could be just as Alex Evans said - a musical game. Err, what? SackBoy Hero: World Tour?

» Sackboy RPG?

yes, I could go for that. And you could interact with the environments, and even change it around.

hmm.... sounds interesting...

If they do it right, Sackboy could be come Sonys own Super Mario....

I just hope they don't do hundreds of silly spinoffs...

» meh

Bit early to speculate. Prefer to just wait and see what they come up with. I love LittleBigPlanet but I don't think I'd want an RPG or something about it.

» it'll

hopefully be an expansion pack where you can use swords

» oh god.

please, not a Sackboy RPG!! I prefer to keep my Sackboy in the realm of creative gaming! Although there would be a correlation between his customizability and the many weapons, costumes, items, etc. that you get in RPG's...wait, no! NO!!!!

And i didn't know that's where Prinny's from! I thought he was a random character they made up.

For the next LBP, it would be cool if they made it for a more mature audience, like more destructibility , more weapons, actual violence, and actual enemies! This would make the ultimate game in my opinion, because it would be like a real-life, mature, more violent version of that game we all love! The possibilities in such a game would be endless...even more so than in the current LBP...

Maybe call it LittleGreatPlan et...

» No, please.

I'd rather have the original patched, and with constant updates that tweak the game and add more playability(lik e the Metal Gear Solid 4 pack) than a whole new game.

haha Sackboy Boy Hero!!! lol

anyway, i was kinda thinking same platform action/adventure game which has some nice story in it. but hey could be anything from rpg to wii fit like kind of game and/or musical.

and eliminate a good portion of the audience. Not a great idea. I like that currently it's cute but not toooo cute. If it was by Nintendo or something it would be all bright colors and stars and stuff, which would have put me off right from the beginning, but going the other way too much making it too dark wouldn't really work that well either. The way it is now seems to appeal to all ages.

I had dreams of it. Sackboy traveling to other planets and the physics being different for each because of the different levels of gravity unique to these planets.

Oh, and a homage level to Star Wars' Death Star.
