Manhunt 2 will damage video game industry, says Braben

David Braben - Image 1 While some may say otherwise, noted game designer David Braben (of Elite fame) has chosen to take a snipe at the Manhunt 2 controversy in an interview with CVG, saying that games the likes of Manhunt 2 should not be created since they attract negative attention towards the video industry.

Braben said that while Manhunt 2 was given a Mature rating, people who are accustomed to other Mature titles but with lesser degree of violence than Rockstar's highly-controversial game (such as the Metal Gear Solid franchise, for one) will buy the game, not aware that Manhunt 2 packs in higher levels of violence and gore.

He goes on to say that "While Manhunt 2 might have brought short term gain to Rockstar, it damages the reputation of the industry as a whole, long termÂ…"

The "short term gain" he refers to may very well by the high-level of interest spurred about by Manhunt 2's controversy. However, Braben said that in the long run all the negative attention will eventually cause the loss of the video game industry's respectability.

How can he say that? Manhunt 2 and all its controversy will ease in a just 2-3 month and then forgotten! That, will never damage the industry at all! if you know it is that violent, don't buy it and no one will hurt you for that nor that manhunt 2 will hurt the industry as he said!! he's just another guy who likes to add oil to the flame!

Braben is spot on really, Rockstar have shot themselves in the foot by taking Manhunt to far. But Braben shouldn't be commenting on anything until he has finished Elite 4.

And what about Postal 2? Did that game ruin the industry's image?

This guy is full of *****. Just because we have a few lobbying groups (whiny christians and soccer moms,) crying fowl over a FEW video games, doesn't mean the industry has a bad image.

A handful of companies DOES NOT represent the industry. Same thing goes for the film industry.

David Braben isn't society, so how does he know if we'll all suddenly think the video game industry is evil? The guy is ignorant to think his opinion is fact.

Bottom line: in a free society, there will always be people clammering and crying over things that should be banned.

Don't like violent video games? Don't like the idea of Manhunt 2?

Shut the ***** up and don't buy it.

It sound kind of interesting the idea of game like that i had to be done sometime, OF course it damages the videogames industry, Rockstar did all this violence games, Now people have something more stable against game and against playing and this affect you playing those games maybe won't affect u much in certain way it does , like when you hear the news , a car exploded , and your minds are the thoughts dude i blow up 25 helicopters yesterday and i got away. when maybe a year ago that new would have shocked u... just saying what is true. BUt what i really think is people won't care really in a long-term cuz for example the trouture-like movies like saw hostel where a hit a few years ago they made millions and just a couple a weeks ago they released hostel 2 and the money didn't even match the production money and it has happened that with many more. So Violcene stuff is fun and interesting for a shot-term but not for long-term.

to say that manhunt 2 will damage the image of the industry and cause it to lose it's credibility is both wrong and right, it supplies fuel for the fire of the people who want to see violent games banned, it does nothing to further the image of games as 'art' or even 'worthwhile entertainment' but to say that the industry will 'lose it's image' is wrong, due to the fact that the image videogames have OUTSIDE the industry is that of puerile 'murder simulators' ... so unfortunately the games industry is simply going to have to work harder still to become respectable, with games like manhunt 2 proving those who we would like to persuade 'right'...

what's the point in a game like mh2 anyway? rockstar have been courting controversy for so long it's the only thing they can do, they brought games to the 'mature' market really well with gta1, now they need to realise that simply making things more violent is working against them.

# No.. you're mostly wrong.Guest 2007-09-09 12:10
So what's the point of pornography? Or, what's the point of religion?

You think the GTA series (which has sold millions of times,) has no point? It does. It's entertainment.

Just because you take offense, or don't like something, doesn't make it suck. It just means you don't like it. But that doesn't mean other people won't.

If something SELLS, there's a reason for it.

# manhunt 2 = 17+Guest 2007-09-09 12:40
If your 17+, then you should have enough common sense to know it's a video game, not reality. Anyone who has found the "leaked uncut" version on the net should know by someone who has played it first hand that it's not as bad as people are saying. I've yet to see anything that hasn't been done in games before, games that have received a teen rating at that.

If this is considered bad, then mortal kombat and the entire GTA series should have been considered unplayable. The game is good if your wondering.

It WILL hurt the industry, but short-term, not long-term. The reason it will cause damage is because video games as a form of entertainment are in a fragile state. They are not as resilient as film.

So ultra-violent games will make it more difficult for games to gain worldwide acceptance as entertainment art....in the short-term.

In the long-term games like this push the envelope and widen the spectrum of what can be presented in games. If nobody ever crossed the lines in painting, theatre or film we would have stagnant, boring redundant work being published.

They have developed into the diverse, multi-faceted art forms they are today because of people who went against potential censors and red-faced special interest groups.

The industry may take a beating for this now, but will only come back stronger, more resiliant and better as a whole.

There have been games far more controversial than Manhunt 2 and far more horrific. It will probably be something like silent hill or resident evil and chances are it won't impact the market at all.

Games that get banned, inspire legislators to act, and bring negative attention hurts the industry. I bought the original Manhunt and was unimpressed with its uninspired gameplay. Run, hide, chop, repeat. Spend some time improving the gameplay. Ramping up the violence and gore doesn't make it a better game.

So what if it damage's the industry it's not like there's anything to damage anyway with every game being a sequel, and whenever someone tries to make something original and good stupid people in this country say dumb crap like this.

P.S i alone with many other have the uncut version of the game, and it's not like the first one people with no life like to make trouble like this idiot.

You know, I hate to be THAT GUY.. But I agree with what he's saying.

The folks who gave Manhunt 2 an M rating instead of the AO rating it initially had been branded with (before Rockstar dropped some extra footage/features in the game), had made a mistake. Take a read at some of the new features stocked up on the sequel.

This is only my opinion, so don't flame. I think the game might just be too gory to project positively on the video game industry as a whole. I love video games, but I'm afraid of the video game industry's name being tarnished with the association of games like Manhunt 2, whose only hype is based off of excessive gore. I think games that push too far out of our frame of reference for what is acceptable, regarding blood/guts-brimming games, aren't healthy for the image of the gaming industry.

Just my opinions, thanks for listening.

Manhunt and the Postal games were brilliant, in their own way. To me, they're like a new form of art. They're really interesting psychologically ... they deal with the darker aspects of humanity in an incredible intense way (especially Manhunt, the Postal games has more of a humorous aproach). I'm not saying that the games are the greatest ever made or something, but to me they hold up a mirror to modern society and say "hey, you're all like this on some level". The "problem" with the Manhunt games is basically, as I see it, that they make a lot of people look deeper into their own minds than they care to look. And I think what horrifies a most of them is what they find there; that they actually can RELATE on some level to all the violence and "disturbed" ways of thinking. I believe that all humans are capable of both great good and great evil.. but a lot of people just prefer to think "I would never do a thing like that, regardless of circumstances". It's all delusions, if you ask me. The biggest difference between most murderers and "regular" people is a matter of choices. It's about which impulses you follow, and how you've learned to deal with problems in life. We are all human.

Here's a thought. Why don't people actually READ what it says in that little box on the back cover? Here, I'll make it easy for you:

---------------------------------------------

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater,

MATURE 17+

Blood and Gore.

Violence.

Language.

Sexual Themes.

Manhun 2,

MATURE 17+

Intense Blood and Gore.

Intense Violence.

Strong Language.

Strong Sexual Content.

Use of Drugs.

---------------------------------

There. Gives you a clear and concise comparision what to expect doesn't it? So Mr. Braben I call utter BS on your statement and call you a pathetic moron who is obviously sold to the people trying to ban violent video games.

I am not a complete idiot and I always read what to expect from the video game after checking its rating.

The statement: "Manhunt 2 was given a Mature rating, people who are accustomed to other Mature titles but with lesser degree of violence than Rockstar's highly-controversial game (such as the Metal Gear Solid franchise, for one) will buy the game, not aware that Manhunt 2 packs in higher levels of violence and gore......."

is next to calling the whole of Americans complete idiots who don't even have the necessary literary skills to read simple English.

Go ***** yourself.

Its better to kill someone virtualy than killing somebody in reality.

People should have their options to buy a "E" or "M" game. People wasting money and fighting for a game when they should keep maniacs out the streets.

When someone kills just for killing its not made its born.

i absolutly adored manhunt 1 as a whole, it had a good story that scared the shyt out of me and the sense of hiding in the darkness hoping the killer wont accidently bump into you

draw a square, okay now draw a tiny square inside about 5 percent of the big square , visualize you are the little square and the rest of the room is full phycopatic killers with weapons and a thirst for blood making crazy evil taunts at you.........picture you had to hide for your life and hope they dont find you in the room and someone is threatening to turn on the lights, and you are defenseless tied up to a chair

this is what the game feels like

i like the levels of killings you can preform ....theres a good story and the stuff in Saw 3 was more graphic than this, cutting open jigsaws brain and the guy getting his face shot off by a sawdoff, and the guy geting his parts twisted to the limit and you only have to be 17 to watch that movie

people say its because you can preform brutal executions, but really it was like picking one and watching a cutscene

the most brutal thing was setting up a guy and bashing his brains out against a wall with a baseball bat

if you think MH is too violent... I just saw an episode of south park where they were trying to get rid bums and stans dad blew some guys freakin' head off..

It literally showed his head getting blown off! Now if that isn't the most gratuitous thing ever, I don't what is. I can't image MH taking it that much further than South Park did...

i didn't say it sucks, and knowing rockstar this game is most likely very well made and is highly playable.

but where they did a great job making 'bully' a public spectacle only to show people like jack thompson they're idiots who don't know what they're talking about (that is, the game wasn't what he had scare-mongered about) they have not done that with manhunt 2.

have you not paid any attention to the news? the british pm has started saying he wants tighter controls on videogames, the shadow pm (tory guy... i forget his name, cameron is it?) is saying the same.

we have to face it, the videogames industry is entering a critical period, if it wants to retain creative freedom then developers need to show the 'rest of the world' that games are not all about killing/violence/sex, i enjoy a good killing game along with many others, but i know when a game is 'good' for the industry or not.

it will sell, but then weed sells and they've made that illegal... i don't object so much to making violent games just taht making them violent for the sake of it DOES damage the industry's already shaky image... and if rockstar etc persist then the 'jack thomsons' of this world will start winning.
