Kojima's big plans for 2009: starting from zero, to take on the world

Hideo Kojima - Image 1Being one of Konami's biggest studios, Kojima Productions has some big plans for 2009. What are they up to? What's big man Hideo Kojima working on? And more importantly, are David Hayter and the rest of the gang still willing to work on more Metal Gear games despite some (questionable) psychological trauma?

Speaking to Famitsu about their plans for 2009, Hideo Kojima reveals that their studio will be starting with a clean slate (well, considering that Ryan Payton has already left...) and still aim to be a global competitor in the video game industry.

Interestingly enough, it seems as if Hideo Kojima is feeling the pressure from Western studios. What with so many industry key persons stating that video game development is no longer centered in Japan, Kojima Productions is now reviewing their current team structure, tools, staff, and basic operations.

I've thought a lot about how Western games have been winning, looking it from a global perspective, and there are things that I've noticed. So 2009 will be a year of change, a year where we start from zero again.

With games, you've got to use cutting-edge techniques, and doing so costs money - so I don't think you can make games that just appeal to the Japanese market. So, 2009 will see us continuing to think how to create a team that can take on the world.

That's weird coming from the guy who made MGS4. Considering it's been quite a success in both Japan and western markets, you'd think Kojima would be pretty confident in his studio's capacity to deliver global-standard games. Well, this is coming from the guy, after all, who said he himself wasn't satisfied with MGS4!

Whatever the case, it looks like they really got some big plans for this year! Can't wait to see what they've got in store for us!

» Wat?

This kinda translates to "No Metal Gear or Zone of the Enders" even it's a port I would like to see both ZOE's on the PSP or something...

Big plans so what? MGS4 was announced somewhere in 2006/2007? And it's released in mid/end 2008 so this piece of BIG will be released somewhere in 2011/2012 *YAWN*

» Meanwhile...

I can complete MGS4 for the 4th time.... in the last month. Whenever they release something I'll be playing MGS4 at least over 9000 times

» Zone of Enders 3 still isn't released

How long has he said he wants to make a third one and that he'd probably make it after the release of MGS4?

He's probably going to lie again though. I mean seriously. Look at how many times he's said [specific version of Metal Gear] is going to be his last one. Metal Gear Solid 2 he said it, Metal Gear Solid 3 he said it, and also Metal Gear Solid 4, then what happens? Yeah.

» HA!

If you didn't know, you know now...

His son disliked/hated the MGS series, but he did like the PSP versions.

Although I hated the PSP versions, the controls are screwed

I was thinking the same thing about the controls for Portable Ops, geez oh man they are something else. I mean the PSP has a bad rep for trying to have FPS's, but a game like Metal Gear, as great as it was, the controls made me stop playing it. I tried to get used to it, but in a game where you're trying to be stealthy, a horrible camera, and cumbersome controls just didn't cross over well.

» Zone Of The Enders 3

I hope he makes an exclusive Zone Of The Enders game for the PS3 using 50GB Blu-ray and making it at least as good as Zone Of The Enders: The Second Runner. That is one of my all time favorite games.

» I 2nd that..

But after Completing MSG4 for the 8th time (big boss difficulty) the Epilogue states the phrase "Start from Zero" several times. Watch the Epilogue again and you'll see my point. Personally I think the man is a genius and I'm waiting for his next game.

» Surprising!

a Konami/Kojima article and still no dedicated 360 fanboy shouting MGS4 for 360.

the fact that most of Kojima San's games are highly inspired with western technologies is what made all his previous titles so successful worldwide, yet he still yearns for more.

I wish him the best. good luck on your future games!

a ZOE.......... oh god i hope so

by sage3k - 2009-01-06 01:21
» no he's right...

On Kojima-San's Blog he said himself that he wanted to delay MGS4 for another 6 months because he thought the game needed more content to fully close out the Story of the Solid series. SONY pulled an Executive Decision and the game was released with out the extra time The was requested and in the Post release interview he stated that he wasn't happy with MGS4 in it's current release. That lead me to think there would be a re-release with a subname [MGS4-requiem or something]. If this eventually happens.. I'm all for it and some more content [like a playable Ninja Raiden, or Liquid Ocelot, etc. Either way.. it' gonna be special!

a question apart from the 1's above....

How the hell did the Assassin's creed costume in the MGS4 game when Konami and Ubisoft are 2 totally different companies? Unless Hideo Kojima has future plans with Ubisoft...
