Jack Tretton talks leaks and confidentiality

Jack Tretton - Image 1We've already read about John Koller's leak frustration, now it's Jack Tretton's turn to air his frustrations about info leaks. The SCEA president talks about confidentiality, the industry's focus, and their fight against the reliably accurate rumor mill.

“People don’t respect confidentiality in this industry,” he said. “It’s tough enough to keep a secret within your own company, much less when you speak to third parties.” Leaks have been around for as long as secrets, but the growing frequency and accuracy of rumored information is definitely a call for concern if you're trying to keep specs under wraps.

Tretton goes on:

This is an industry that has trouble focusing on today. We want to constantly talk about tomorrow.Â… You have to prepare for people to know things in advance. The frustrating thing is they only know a part of the story and that opens up a lot of conjecture and misinformation that ultimately waters down the reality when you roll it out.

He's got a point. Take the PS3 Slim for example - it has already been judged, criticized, and speculated on while it's not yet even in its final output nor would it be able to defend itself with specs that Sony isn't even gonna release for a long time. Rumors basically killed what could have been a surprise, and like Tretton said, "waters down the reality when you roll it out."

Sure, the industry wants to stay informed. The information would definitely help with future purchases. Speaking in a general context (and not just the PS3 Slim), if there's something new coming out, I wouldn't want to wind up getting the inferior version of anything a day before the release of the better one - that would just suck. It's like spending all your gil for a weapon minutes before you get Ultima Weapon (it doesn't happen, but you get the picture, yes?).

It's a debatable subject, so I guess it'll be up to the reader. At the end of the day, it's all about how you want to stay informed.

gotta agree with tretton........love the PS3

but the rumor and leaks that we paid so close attention 2 is i guess in a way how we show the depth of our fascination and connection (maybe love) for such a highly valued treasure........just like how we love 4 paparazzi to stick their nose into our favorite celeritys life.........their pain, shame, agony, maybe even downfall ( Michael jackson) fills us with sweet guilyt pleasure.............that evil in our hears feels so warm

And do you guys remember the feeling of emptyness you all felt when the word 'Online' popped up ?

Tretton has a point though and I agree with him.

Nice

Actually, although I see his point from a strategic and business perspective, .... he's got to be smart enough to know that the secret may get out beforehand. If the plots to major movies and screeners get out weeks or months before a movie, you can't expect to hide something as HUGE as PSP Go or PS3 Slim. .....Of course, there's a flipside to all this: we're believing that these "leaks" were really not meant to be found. It's also VERY possible that Sony themselves put out these "leaks". It's not like it's a bad thing to have the whole Internet buzzing about your 'rumored' new hardware. There's also a certain type of elation when something cool is 'leaked' and then confirmed a month or two later (such as with the PSP Go). Think of the PS3 Slim rumor: no, it was confirmed at E3 ...and that's a disappointment to many. But, it doesn't stop EVERYONE from talking about it and anticipating it. --Seems to me that this "leak" isn't necessarily a destructive force for Sony's marketing department (much in the same way that the PSP Go "leaK" didn't cause negative publicity for Sony). Even if Sony really didn't have a PS3 Slim in-the-works ... is there anyone who doubts that some day/year they will? (When that's what they did with PS1 + PS2?) It still builds consumer anticipation.

this is a prime example of a company...

who REFUSES to change how they play their game. I mean g-ddamn if they haven't figured out that they're third in this gen and no one in their right mind gives a crap if their making a thin verson or not...They have to create things that no one else can copy in 6months. If not (which apart from Home), they should announce everything (in standard fashion) that and not play this "secret/intrigue" game. Geez, Wake Up!

Well..

Whilst a surprise is nice and all, I like to know if I'm about to purchase a defunct product ahead of time, and then decide if its worth waiting.

true

leak or no leak though sony owned E3. i know fanboys of MS and ninto are gonna hate, but you can go on pretty much any gaming website and the best of e3 awards are given to sony. Sorry its a fact and im happy because "i told you so" 3 years ago when people were saying that sony would fail this gen because they have no games.

Very nice

Great article Glenn.

Jack, while I having some sort of issues with some of his statements, did make good points in this article.

Especially the price cut. People just don't understand as a company trying to gain money, especially the 2 billion they lost on PS3 at launch year, its very difficult to lower the price when you're still losing $40 per console sold. Only if this was a dream world where anything is possible, and these consoles and games given away for free. Sadly, it's reality and this isn't possible: Especially in this global economic recession.

ALONG TIME!, hahaha funny article

August/ September for PS3 Slim is NOT along time from now, oh great smart one. Its just 3 months from now and thats quick.

Oh you freaking underestimate Sony, when you say theres no Slim coming out till next year. Your just contradicting yourself in the end.

You wanna know the facts, those photos are real and not chinese knock offs and August/ September is NOT a very long time from now.

You act as if its coming in 2010. BS its always was supposed to come out this year NOT next year. It was Sonys plan to bring a Slim to USA in August/ September 2009 since 2007.

Go Google 45nm Cell Processor and you will get a million answers on this stuff.

Toshibas the one next to IBM whos bringing the Slim PS3 this year.

Sony/ IBM/ Toshiba all manufacture the chip but Toshiba owns half the company that manufactures the 45nm Cells and RSX chips.

This is how I know about the Slim PS3 and Im always correct.

By the way if you think PS3 Slim will make them lose money, thats BS, its saving them money, thats why there bringing them out in August/ September.

Alot of stores around me have ran out of the 80 gig and Sony will not ship them anymore, wanna know why?

Slim PS3 is on the way. You guys are so not intelligent enough to copy other articles off of the internet. You do not know what comments to put under these old articles other than your opinion, which makes absolutely no sense because its not true at all.

by houaruto - 2009-06-14 15:18
so true

what cracks me up is even after E3 crapbox fanboys still pretend PS3 has no games on the PS3 not to mention the best exclusives........and then all of a sudden they all start begging for mgs4 as if their life depended on it.............i laugh so much about it that it pains me to see them in so much denial as that is the only thing they can hope for.
