Interview - David Amor: Video games are still 'miles away' from mass market - Image 1In an interview with Games Industry, Relentless Software's co-founder David Amor shared some of his thoughts regarding the state of video games.

He said that during at this time, video games won't be able to crossover from gaming consoles to a broader entertainment device. Amor said that, as of the moment, the video games are still "miles away" from reaching the mass market.

But as time passes by, Amor believes that with every generation that comes along, the stigma on video games will become decreasingly apparent. Amor added that some games that have been able to help reshape the way people view video games.

Even if this happens to be the case, video games still have a long road ahead before they can reach the mass market. Amor said:

So the stigma's gone away, people are realizing that it can appeal to a wider set of people, moms and dads are playing Brain Training, Buzz!, SingStar, so it's certainly going in the right direction, but we're a long way off real mass market.

If you only appeal to a certain section of people, you can't get the hardware sales beyond a certain point.

Wii Sports? I know tons of people who have never played video games that LOVED it.

My entire family didn't like games and then I brought a Wii over and just as I was done they wanted to play it more.

Wii has definitely started shrinking that margin and if another game that is similar to Wii Sports hits the market that is just as fun and simple, I think the barrier will be torn down.

I believe the fact that the consoles take so much money for those in the lower and middle class to purchase the console is the reason its not grown to an overwhelming statistic. Nintendo said their ideal goal was to have a Wii in every household I believe. They are well on their way to it and if a future price drop comes I think it will come even closer.

Just my opinion.

this is retarded its closer than this guy knows. Its only that the wii is the only console that a large family will play and its having a (fake or not who reallt knows?) shortage so when nintendo is able to or decides to (again anyone saying either one is for certain is just trying to act like they actually KNOW anything) get more wiis out there over the next few years this so called "long road" will close very soon and look at big bad Microsoft has theyre own wiimote ripoff coming soon anyways which may make non hard core gamers buy Xboxs more. sonys got a wiimote ripoff also actually.......

The problem I see with the Wii is that there is not one game that I would care to get, and if Nintendo want a Wii in ever home there going to have to make real games that gamers, like me, want to play. I have tried to play some of the games on the Wii, and none of them where any fun. Why? Way too simplict game play.

The only way I would get a Wii is:

1) Take a little more skill to play. So far no Wii game has that.

2) does not need the Wiimote to play. I am not saying get rid of the thing. Just make games that use the Classic Controller more.

If Nintendo does these two things, then I will mostly get a Wii. But as of now I have a X-Box 360, and realy soon I will be getting a PS3. Mainly becuse those two have games that I want to play.

The Sixaxis i not a direct copy of nintendo's remote control. The reason being is that they have been using the technology in a different fashion, and they dont use it in every game that is made from the PS3. I own a Nintendo Wii, and a PS3 so I do know what I am talking about. If you dont believe me, PM me for my username and friend code.

A guy at my job bought a 360 for his son, he says he plays it until 3am most night, the dad not the son. My dad just got a PS3, and is called FreeBeanieSigel (my old account) on Halo 2 on Xbox live. My mom almost bought a Wii for my grandma and great aunt. Video games may not be mass market but they are already mainstream.

How many PS2's were sold in the US?
