Gran Turismo Creator Interview

Gran TurismoThe guys at 1UP got a chance to interview Kazunori Yamauchi at a launch event by Sony for the game, Tourist Trophy, held at an official PlayStation store in San Francisco. Kazunori Yamauchi was the head of development at Polyphony Digital, and currently is a Sony Computer Entertainment Executive.

Here's an excerpt of the interview:

1UP: Since Sony has restructured its various divisions, your job has changed. How does your day to day job differ from what it used to be when you were just in charge of Polyphony?
Kazunori Yamauchi: The change may not be huge, but there is in fact a change to my day to day activities. Previously, I was 100% in charge of Polyphony and that was all I had to worry about, but currently maybe 30% of my day to day activities represent SCE corporate or overall PlayStation business planning or strategies -- things like that.

1UP: Now that Tourist Trophy is done, looking back on it, what are you most proud of and what might you have done differently?
Kazunori Yamauchi: The most proud area is that we were able to be the first game that features real physics and performance simulation of bikes in a videogame. An area that we had hoped to fix but couldn't would be displaying more bikes on the screen for a race -- that would obviously lead to a more exciting race, but this has been a limitation we've faced with the hardware performance unfortunately.

1UP: I know some of the same art assets were used in Tourist Trophy from Gran Turismo. From here do you see it becoming its own franchise, or is this more an experiment to see how it goes and then you'll decide at that point?
Kazunori Yamauchi: Back at the studio, Polyphony, we do have test machines where we can display both cars and bikes on the same tracks, just for experiment purposes. Perhaps maybe in the future we might have a title where we have both. This time around, the reason why they've been separated is only a technical reason, with these performance limitations with the PlayStation 2.

1UP: Finally, can you give us any update on Gran Turismo PSP?
Kazunori Yamauchi: We are in the works. It is going forward. It does exist. We're working on it. We don't have a release date, of course. A question for you is do people out there really have high hopes for a GT version on PSP?

It's disappointing that he didn't reveal a release date for the PSP version of Gran Turismo. Judging from the lack of must-have titles for the PSP, I feel that they're shining and polishing it to a level that just about nobody will be able to give it a miss. I hope they are making it look and feel pretty dam good. It's one of the few games I bought my PSP for. I was hoping to see it next month as play.com has given a preidcted release date for then. I would be bitterly dissapointed if it slipped any further than July tbh.

# Tourist Trophy, excellent game!Guest 2006-04-09 07:40
Just bought Tourist Trophy a couple days ago. I've been riding/racing for the past 15 years and I must say the physics of this game aren't perfect but pretty damn close. I would like to see more bikes in a race and maybe even return the money system. The graphics could rival that of an Xbox360 game, imho. All in all, another great game from PD.

GT for PSP would be great, so would TT.

I'm sure they'll have at least some screen shots to show by then. If they don't then it would seem that they are shooting themselves in the foot. From the "interview," I get the impression that PD isn't even sure what they are doing with the franchise. PS3 or PSP first? That seems like a no-brainer. The PS3 is still 7 months away, while PSP owners have been chomping at the bit for it for close to a year already. The last reports I read about it were that the PSP version was that it's simply going to be a remake of GT4 and would contain little, if any, new stuff. If PD doesn't have a launch time-table figured out yet, then I wouldn't plan on seeing any more titles for at least a year. I'm growing more disappointed with PD with every release they make. They never stick to a time-table. Things are always a year or more behind schedule. I'd have been fired from my job a long time ago if anything I worked on was even close to that late. I mean, it's not like PD has a lot of projects going on concurrently or anything. They make GT (and now TT) games for Sony and that's it.

GT4 Mobile has been "coming soon" ever since the PSP launched here in the US a year ago. It's getting a little old. Not to mention that there's already 79 gazillion other racing titles already released for the PSP. Does anyone know a percentage of how many of the PSP games are racing games?

I hope GT for psp can come close to any of the GT's for PS2, psp has more power, but is limited by ram which is needed for larger and more detailed textures. However I hope they push the psp to the 333 mhz front, or atleast the 266 mhz line to improve performance.

Lets just hope GT portable is better than all thse NFS games (im not badmouthing, just bored of them!)

# I partly hope GT Mobile does not come outGuest 2006-04-09 20:23
Don't get me wrong, I love the series, I even bought a PS2 just for GT4.

However, my experience so far of 'realistic' driving games for the PSP has been poor, and part of this has been down to the control system. While in my heart I'd love to play GT on the tube/train, I think the nipple joystick and lack of analog buttons wouls produce more frustration than joy.
