GDC 2007: "It's all about software now" says Harrison

Phil Harrison - Image 1After showing off the PlayStation Home, sitting down with Kotaku, and admitting that there are not enough PS3s for a GTA IV-exclusive, Phil Harrison now said that the company is now focused on software and that the challenges of recent months are all in the past.

He mentions to GameIndsutry.biz that "it's all about software now, it's not about hardware. It's all about services, it's about the way the industry is changing and the way we hope to be taking a leadership position in that change." He also highlighted the importance of the recently-concluded GDC 2007 by saying that "we're taking some pretty giant steps forward... The keynote here at GDC was a very, very significant moment for the evolution of PlayStation 3."

Innovative software is the name of the game and Phil pointed out games such as God of War, Loco Roco, Shadow of the Colossus, Eye Toy and SingStar as games that "wouldn't come out of perhaps a more conservative product development strategy, and certainly wouldn't come from a multi-platform third-party publisher".

He then went on to say that "it's something that as a platform holder we have a responsibility to grow the market, and to try and push the market. What I wanted to do here at GDC was paint a picture for where this industry should, I believe, move - which is to empower the user with user-created content. That's what I was referring to with the Game 3.0 aspect to my presentation." He ends the sit-down session by saying "I hope the industry debates it and challenges it and takes it to another level beyond what we have imagined".

than why dont they make anymore innovative games besides loco roco or exit and not port them to the ps2 afterwards, mostly all the psp has is ports or reharshes.

I'm glad Harrison is trying to move forward and make real, concrete progress for the PS3 with a clear concept and vision. I also like his frank honesty, like admitting that they lost the GTA4 exclusive due to their own lack of a reasonable-sized userbase. This is in stark contrast to Kutaragi's out-of-touch views and bad communication, which crippled the launch in the US and JP and set back the euro launch.

» talk is cheap

It takes a little more than some announcment to make progress for the PS3. How many announcments saying basically the same thing has he made so far? How long will it be before another heavily hyped disapointment like motorstorm comes along? Is lair the next disapointment?
