Ex-SCEE employee to Sony: improve PSP SDK; iPhone's is better |
Ó

An ex-SCEE employee has laid out a few suggestions on how Sony can improve its relationships with third-party developers for the PlayStation Portable. Among them was a redesign of the PSP SDK, which he said pales in comparison to the iPhone SDK.
Sebastien Rubens, a former member of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Technology Group who left to form No Gravity publisher Anozor, said that making the PSP SDK easier to use would be a step in the right direction:
There's always room for improvement in everything, but if you look at thirdparty relations in the US, they're a little more integrated than in Europe.
The second step is to have a better SDK -- iPhone's is better. You could make things a lot easier to use, and I come from the software engineering side.
After that it's a problem of the market and deciding what it wants, including prices for downloadable games, so people know what kind of games to make – in other words, not a GTA, even if PSP is technically capable of running it, because the economics don't make it worth it.
Rubens also mentioned that Sony is "a bit too slow to move" during the submission process, something that should also be remedied.

Well, the psp isnt as new as the iphone, and the psp isnt an iphone, I mean, The iphones SDK was made with all sorts of things in mind, like apps, The psps was made like back when the psp was made. I do agree we need better psp games and anything to make the games better is a plus.
So does that mean Sony never tried making the SDK better after the initial release? If so, they're REALLY slow (You know, considering its been 5 years).
i think they probably have improved it a bit eg. when they enabled games to be able to use the processor at 333mhz but thats probably it.
You don't have a clue what an SDK is, do you?
So what. As a handheld games console, the iPhone pales in comparison to the PSP.
He's just saying that if they updated the SDK it would probably attract more developers. The easier a device is to program, the more people go to it.
why compare the psp to a iphone.. it's been compared so many times. Sony owns apple. end of story. VAIO vs. Mac Walkman vs. Ipod (wayback machine LOL VAIO Pocket vs Ipod) Sony Ericsson vs. iphone don't forget the different series of the phones. Liekz Cybershot (for photos), Walkman (Walkman duh), the newly and upcoming Xperia series. And japan only the Bravia series (mobile tv) And we (Sony) still have some thing that ISN'T hacked yet. The PS3. While your dumbass macos can be runned on some cheapass subnotbooks (MSI Wind, Dell Mini 9) I rather spend more money on 3 or 4 devices that I can get quality from it then 1 piece of overpriced ***** that can do anything but in *****.
I agree....cz theres been alot of official iphone application out there but only a few for PSP...which probably foreshadows that Sony is a bit behind in software as compared to iphone.
I have no clue what you were trying to point out with this post.
because Sony fired his ***** ass. He could be right though.
What no bashing of the PS3 SDK? PSP/PS3 SDK must be very similar they were developed at similar times. Maybe this is just a free publicity marketing stunt. I doubt a developer would refuse to enter the PSP market because of gossip about the SDK, they would need to try it for themselves.
why would they pay 10,000 for the SDK and dev hardware to "just try it". if i were going into either the [lets say] Xbox or PSP market and the Xbox had a better SDK i would totally dev for the Xbox, it would be easier and more productive.
did u really just try to say that a console being unhackable is a plus?
