Dax Berg breaks the ice on The Golden Compass gameplay, tools, and versions |
Ó
With the movie version coming out very soon to theaters near you, and with the game version clearly almost finished, it is no surprise that people would want to know more about Sega's The Golden Compass (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, PSP, DS, PC) . Acting on their curiosity, IGN had a little chat with the game's lead designer to get more dibs on how the game's progress is moving along.Dax Berg was more than accommodating in sharing tidbits (without giving too much away, though!) on matters such as those concerning gameplay, tools of the game, and how the different versions (the game is coming out on all conceivable platforms, after all) differ from each other, if at all.
An interesting mechanic to take note of here is lead character Lyra's Deception ability. Berg reveals that "the correlation between the name 'Lyra' and the word 'liar' was intentional." Apparently, the character would be a wily one, using this ability to manipulate and to outwit her enemies by winning them over, probably with her suave moves.
An important tool in the game would be the Alethiometer, and Berg describes it as "the direct bridge from the game to the hard core fans." It will play an important role in Lyra's quest of finding answers to questions, and then some more, which would ultimately make up the design of the challenging tasks she will have to face and conquer.
A good thing to note as well is that the various versions of The Golden Compass don't really have big differences, at least for the most part) . "The fact that we were able to get the same gameplay you experience on the PS3 into a machine the size of an ashtray (i.e. the PSP) still stupefies me."
