PlayStation Portable - Image 1

It's only been a couple of months since the PSP-3000 hit stores, so another new PSP isn't on the cards yet. That's what SCEE boss David Reeves told MCV in a recent interview:

No, there are currently no plans for a PSP2. I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it – I think they have their hands full at the moment.

We just launched the PSP-3000 so we are still focused on this generation of the platform.

Aside from spouting the standard Sony denial line, Reeves also conceded that yes, the PSP is in a tight spot in terms of games, acknowledging that software is the handheld's major weakness. Reeves lays the blame square on the door of developers:

...developers, when it comes to placing their bets, have to choose PS3 and 360, then Wii, then DS, maybe even PS2 before PSP. ItÂ’s the same at our internal studios, where the focus has been on PS3.

Reeves assured PSP faithful that games will come, but they'll just "take a while longer". Reminds me of the movie Field of Dreams: "If you build it, they will come." Well, they better.

This is ridiculous. But could just be something to throw us off the scent.

I'd love a PSP2. Maybe not yet, there's a lot of life in the PSP still but I could see how it could be improved (LED backlight, faster UMD, internal storage, always-on connection and PSN style friends stuff).

I do agree that software is the PSP's weakest side. I love the few games I own and they provide me with an experience the DS never could (which I also enjoy playing, though)... My friends gave up on the system a long time ago citing the lack of upcoming games as the problem. We do need more games. Plx.

» ps3 connectivity

no s**t. no devs want their game pirated so why dev for psp? what they need to do is release (hate to say it) more psp PSN titles. and its a good thing PSN has already started with that.

if they ever decide to improve psp again, they better make a ps2 & 3 controller converter and design it to clip on to the psp with a stand. (it better have adjustable tilt too) high res support on HDTV would be nice too.

psp2 would make sense if they make it run ps2 games. lol. that would justify the title.

"David Reeves", huh?

Hmmm.... Keanu Reeves has a brother? lol, jk.

psp is dead.

» agreed

There is definately a problem with pirating on the PSP. Software is PSP's major problem. The lack of PS3 connectivity is a software problem. As far as your ps2/ps3 controller convert I've got a better idea. How about plug your PSP into your PS3 via USB and use your PS3 controller and HDTV to play PSP games all through your PS3. This is totally feasible and already done through homebrew on PC's via remote joy, but very buggy.

I own a PSP phat.

I hate this game generation :/ I wasn't able to buy a PS2 ever. I bought a PSP instead of the xbox 360 thinking it would be like the PS2 with lots of cool games... I regret that so much :(

» Ya know.......

I'm getting to the point where I dont even care anymore.

Software: Yes. I agree with the obvious. This machine is in definite need of games.

Hardware: THIS MACHINE NEEDS AN UPDATE.

See, the whole purpose of a HANDHELD is that it be these things:

1. Light but also, SMALL. (the psp is too looooong.)

( is that a psp or are u happy to see me? comes to mind)

2. Easy to carry without fear of screen damage

3. Excellent battery life.

4. It should have software that is conducive for 'on-the-go' types. (20 min intros and save points spaced an hour apart, are not handheld friendly.)

It doesnt matter how powerful your hardware is if you dont have a steady stream of games to support it. But, we know this already.

I used to play my psp ALL the time. Now I havent picked it up in months (since I got a ps3 :D)

» Second Joystick

The lack of a second joystick is really the problem here. Publishers must redesign each PSP game in order for it to function without the second joystick. Its painful for devs to do such a task, so they do not bother porting it for PSP. So many commercials for games made for every console and DS, but hardly any for PSP. Why? The lack of the second joystick. At least the DS has two screens but its not really designed for hardcore gaming. The PSP has all the traits of a full fledged console but I can repeat myself all day. The second joystick and UMD are the main factors that hurt PSP.

by Acteon - 2008-12-11 22:24
» Not quite....

Software isn't the problem - I've bought 4 new games on PSP in the last 2 months - Macross, Star Ocean, Gundam vs Gundam and DJ Max Clazziqui - there are some awesome games for the handheld, they just rarely get translated.

Piracy is a major issue, and PSP is now this generations Dreamcast.

The real problem, as ever, is Sony's crap marketing of everything Playstation for the current generation. It's been lazy, incompetent, botched and embarassing. The brand became so powerful that they just stopped caring, so we get dross like the "This is living" campaign, possibly the worst adverts I've ever seen. By contrast, Nintendo's simple and straightforward campaigns have seen the Wii do extremely well, even though software for that console is also drying up.

Bottom line, unless Sony stop being so vague, no one will care when the good games arrive, because all the hardware will be on Ebay. And at that point, we may never even see a PSP2. Perhaps Microsoft will plug the gap and learn from all of Sony's mistakes.

» Games mainly hurt the PSP

The second joystick doesn't hurt the games as much as people think as it really only hurts the possibility of shooting games, but that's really it. Other than that, the second joystick isn't much of an issue.

The PSP does have a large library of good games. The fact that it gets so few games in comparison to the other systems and the majority of these games are actually good make it have possibly the lowest ratio of shovelware for any system. I own 34 PSP games and the majority of them are good, easily. At the same time I own 24 for the DS with the majority of those being good as well.

In Japan the PSP is doing much much better since they're actually releasing games over there, they're just not localizing most of those releases for the US.

Anyways. If you ask me, it does look like the PSP will be picking up a bit in 2009 A few possible good games for the US are Star Ocean 2, Resistance Retribution, Dissidia, Prinny(I dislike Disgaea, but this looks like a good platformer,) and Phantasy Star Portable. These are only definitely releases and there will most likely be more good ones coming along.

Let's not the PS3/PSP ad-hoc party compatibility. When at home play your ad-hoc games with other people no matter where they're at. Definitely a killer app for the PSP and just wait until it gets out of its beta and gets a much larger compatibility list(which others outside of the compatibility list do work, but most don't.)

PSP pwnz. PERIOD

by NarooN - 2008-12-12 00:07
» wel, thats true.

It's realy the developers' faults. hell, even the DS lacks real AAA titles. The last kickass games I played on PSP were the Syphon Filter games, and the Chains of Olympus. Crisis Core gets an honorable mention since I have yet to play it.

Devs are simply too lazy to do anything other than a slacked-off port of already-established Console games.

But...Tenchu 4 is coming to PSP, so I'm definitely buying the hell out of that.

by majorbb100 - 2008-12-12 01:02
» i agree as well

the psp is dead, time to move on to the iphone.

by majorbb100 - 2008-12-12 01:04
» second analogue

yes it is a HUGE problem. If there was a second analogue stick we could have so many more games. My dream is EA Skate for the psp. But because of the lack of 2 analogues, it will never happen.

by sage3k - 2008-12-12 01:16
» Funny... but

I admit Pirating is an issue on the PSP.. but it's much worse on the DS and the Wii. The difference is that Pirating on those consoles are "Accepted" and Pirating on the PSP is taken to a level where it's Frowned upon. that's like the asking what came first.. the Chicken or the Egg?

by Acteon - 2008-12-12 03:38
» Hmm

I have the same ratio of PSP/DS games as you, and I'd agree that in terms of shovelware, the PSP is really pretty well off. Good point ^^

It's ridiculous how many insane zealots reside on this site. Your post made 100% sense and addressed the issues causing the PSP to do so terribly on the market.

The only games I bother with now are the ones that let you save anywhere. Handheld games NEED this feature! Or at least a fully working save state system in place.

It's a shame that some idiots vote down posts that are the truth.

» Psp2

The playstation store and games on the hardrive are the way to go. The umd is taking up space in the psp that no one really uses, turn that big space into internal memory and more battery life, and there you go. Fix those software problems so that people cant hax it and there you go. Download your games off the Ps store and for those who dont want to they could go to bestbuy and bestbuy could have a psp2 game download station where you could use cash to buy a game instead of credit.

by blackthorn - 2008-12-12 12:08
» No

With the cost of flash rom what it is now, there's honestly no need for UMD format - which is over priced, costly to produce, power intensive bull*****.

by bato locz - 2008-12-12 13:12
» it needs new stuff

ok, the only reason why i use my psp is to listen to some music. there are just a few games out there and jeez!!, i dont like to spend 40 bucks for just a game. second, if they are thinkin about a psp2 they better put a joy stick under the x button, that all the buttons like home vol, select , and start glow in the dark

PS: im mexican, sorry if i didn't wrote some things right!!!

by darkpigen - 2008-12-12 13:28
» Yeah....

How many times have I personally read about Sony's denials only to find out they flat-out lied and many of the rumors happened to be true? Many times... if not every time.

I understand why. Why would consumers buy the 3000 if a new model is already in the works?

I think my comment is really for you all... Who takes them seriously anymore? Lie after lie. So to me this reads... the PSP2 is in the works... but we want you to buy the 3000... we don't want even less sales.

Its understandable... just I think everyone on this board knows the routine by now.

» pathetic

Sony needs to release more games for psp! people need to do whatever they have to to port all major multi-console games to psp. i'd play a great ps3 game on psp with lowered graphics, or less music/cutscenes. c'mon , just give psp some games. Or give us the good games, like when god of war 3 comes out, make that ***** exclusive to psp! hah! and I agree with Rosh31, if they go completely with the downloading games thing, then a station at your local electronics shop would work fine for people like me who dont like using credit cards. (never had one yet) Long live psp!!! and DA!!!!!!

by willman0527 - 2008-12-13 17:08
» there are many problems with the psp and all portable systems

there ment to be a mini version(demo) of bigger systems some may be revolutionary(g ameboy) and some may just plain fail but on problem is out of all the psp games in the us about 70(less than 50% of all us titles) of them offer gamesharing when i hear a system is going to offer gamesharing i would think all or most games would offer it

by gammy69er - 2008-12-15 17:01
» I dunno Guys...

Everyone here is Far too critical. PSP is a great system. I agree when it is stated that there isn't enough "Great Games" for it, but there are a few, and a lot of good ones. There are also a lot of homebrewers out there, adding extra function and classics to the mix (i'd like to see your DS turn on your tv, or browse YouTube, Or play classic games apart from GB and GBA). Yes, Piracy is an issue, but DS and Wii do have it much worse ( i can get over 2000 DS games and don't need a system to play, just my PC, easy) The whole Stigma with it is the Software hack. To Hack Wii or 360 you need a chip, DS needs but an Adaptor for a flash card. A lot less likely of damaging the unit with these items (assuming you know someone who can solder well) and much easier than Pissing round with Firmware cracks and certain versions of games and stuff... and for the DS, a lot less technical.

PSP is an Awesome machine with a great Base of People that want to do things for it. Iphone is a lot more powerful, but call me old fashined, i like buttons. i have enough trouble with the tilt on PS3, let alone having that as the only form of turning/moving (aside from touch)

Sony has mentioned a 10 year life, i don't see it. a next gen is around the Corner (with all these Mini PCs popping up on the market, only a matter of time before a 1.2ghz+ handheld is in the pipeline - the psp will still have a home in the homebrew commuinity though, because of the versitility and function.

Oh, and for those that don't like the size of the PSP, get real. This is supposed to be a replacement for console on the go, not a *****ing photo keychain. it is a great screen and had they made it smaller, would've been *****. also, for those whom are worried about scratched screens - that's what screen protectors and slip covers are for - get a clue and prep everything before you damage the stuff.

Thats my rant for the Day - thanks for reading. Just remember the PSP is More than just games, it's a mobile life, and thats why we buy - otherwise we would all buying 360s - yuk
