David Perry: Wii's success, PSP's failure, and new IP Plague - Image 1They say that when David Perry talks, everybody should listen. Well, the legendary developer just spoke about many things regarding Nintendo Wii's success, Sony PSP's lackluster performance, and everything else in between. And we believe you guys are rather interested to hear his thoughts.

Perry was all praises for Nintendo and the effective business approach it is currently taking for the motion-sensitive console. According to him, Nintendo is so innovative and that it has the track record to shake the competitor's world at a moment's notice. His thoughts on the Wii is best summed up in this quote:

You can't assume it is going to be like the other platforms, because you are going to have Nintendo taking most of the sales. And if Nintendo really sees you as a threat, they will take the moves to wipe you out. They are not going to let you win.

David Perry was quoted before saying that the UMD format for the PlayStation Portable is already dead. Despite attempts to simplify control schemes (as compared to the PS3 and PS2) to engage casual gamers, Sony failed in securing enough exclusives and accepting ports contributed to the downward trend:

You are going to end up with exactly that frustration- why is the game not as good? If you have a PlayStation 3 version of a game, the PSP version is going to be like the bastard stepchild of that game. They really need to restart the PSP program in my book.

Aside from his current racing MMORPG project dubbed as "Top Secret", David Perry used to developed a new IP called Plague. However, he stopped working on it because it began when the user base for next-gen consoles is not yet established. He admits that every once in a while, developers need to think business-wise to avoid losing money.

When asked if he's going to continue working on it now that there are enough next-gen gamers, David Perry answered, "Absolutely. When there are 100 million PlayStation 3's out there, it's a whole different conversation. But we're not there".

Blinkered

Whilst I agree with some of his comments, I can't agree with the PSP comments - is he suggesting that the PSP will never work unless it generates PS3 standard performance? Following that logic, the PS2 would be dead and buried for the same reason (and it isn't). There are over 6 million PSP's in customers hands - the sensible business brain should consider that a really, really great PSP game has the potential to stand out and attract a massive number of gamers. Just like Crisis Core. Or the impending God of War. Perhaps he's worried that his efforts could be mediocre and sink into the mire? Sounds like the guy just dislikes the PSP to me, I think his reasoning is skewed. Oh, and to re-iterate my comments on the "UMD is dead" rubbish - most games don't use the full capacity, so that's a lame excuse too.

Oh snap!

lol fanboy
by Keith K - 2007-09-26 03:20:44
who?

Never heard of this guy.. he's probably just an editor for Nintendo Power or some ***** no one cares about.
by Ash735 - 2007-09-26 03:23:22
I have to agree on one thing...

He's right about the PSP games, most are ports of PS2 titles and spin offs, games like MGS PO, GTA Stories, etc, they were fun I'll admit and do pass time quite well, but honestly, the best game I've played on the PSP is Dead Head Fred, which is an Original game! We need more Original Games like this!
by Brakkos - 2007-09-26 04:03:49
He have some valid points.

At this moment Nintendo reigns supreme because the efforts of Sony dealing with the DS has been lame. If they want the PSP to surpass the DS they need to give more attention to it. Sony needs to set a division, or a staff to deal only with all about PSP (we all know that their majority efforts are for the PS3). Is not about a slimmer system, is about the content, if developers don't want to make games for the PSP, Sony have enough studios to make them work some excellent titles for the system, they need only a handfull of system sellers and them the other 3rd party studios will pick-up. The PSP it's an excellent system, superior in every aspect to Nintendo's toy, it only needs the right games to beat the DS.
by Acteon - 2007-09-26 04:26:27
Poor marketing...

is another factor affecting Sony. When was the last time you saw an advert for the PSP? Or a PSP game sponsoring something on the TV? Nintendo has it's marketing spot on - God knows what Sony are playing at.
by antbing - 2007-09-26 04:36:41
hmmm

I dont even play my Wii anymore. However, I use my PSP almost daily. This guy is a douchebag (as illustrated by his gay photo) Button up your shirt queer!
by goldy_bansal123 - 2007-09-26 04:58:44
who the hell is he?

More sales does not mean that DS is better than PSP. It happens because cheap price of DS.
by baawizardx - 2007-09-26 06:27:48
Are you serious?

Wow, you people posting here are idiots. You don't know who David Perry is???!!!??? He's a game developer, founder of Shiny Entertainment, creator of Earthworm Jim (one of the greatest games ever from my childhood). He's been developing games for like the last 25 years. That's like moviegoers saying they don't know who George Lucas is. Idiots.
by Acteon - 2007-09-26 06:38:36
Erm...

Oh, most of us know who he is. We just don't care. Nothing he's saying is particuarly insightful, he's just stating the obvious and then adding opinion stated as fact. And MDK was better than EWJ, I just haven't played a Shiny title since. Has anyone? Oh, and the "Nintendo won't let you win" line is a classic. Worked real well when PSOne and PS2 turned up didn't it? Incidentally I own a Wii and a DS, the latter of which I barely use. And a last word on ports - yes, there are a load of them, but the PSP is a portable CONSOLE so ports are inevitable. Hell, it works the same way on Wii and DS (Trauma Centre for example) but no mention of that from Davey because it doesn't fit his argument. Don't assume we're all morons, 'kay? :)
by Chaoticgamer - 2007-09-26 07:13:33
...?

no your wrong there aren't many good games out there for the PSP. The PSP was a failure to begin with especially due to lack of games that were sold in the US. There are a lot of PSP games out there but about 1/11 games are good. I dont know why they wanted to make the PSP slimmer, was Sony desperate to make more money. The only reason why they got back on their feet was because Crisis Core that came with the bundled pack PSP with a little picture displayed on the back. Also there are never going to be any more good games for the time being. The developers are afraid that if they make it the stupid UMD wouldn't protect. The UMD is a slow tiny disc that fits on the PSP like a cassette. The PSP slim ruined that. I think its a very good idea to abandon the PSP and move onward to a new generation of Playstation.
by goldy_bansal123 - 2007-09-26 07:27:40
who is George Lucas now?

Is Shiny Entertainment a gaming company? even I dont know about Earthworm Jim but i guess, this game is for Nintendo. If i am right then it is clear why David Perry is praising DS. Without Nintendo, he could dead with hunger.
by elchavodel_213 - 2007-09-26 07:29:41
PSP

Well I think this guy is just scared to make a PSP game. It sounds to me that all he cares is about making money which there is nothing wrong with that. If you're going to be in the gaming world you should care that you make great games and how much your cashing in on should be the lest of your worries. Great games will financially keep them secure. There are many good games out there for the PSP, and yes a lot of them are ports of PS2, but time after time I hear people say they want there favorite games on PSP like Final Fantasy, Socom, Tekken, Metal Gear, GTA, and even as far as other platforms games like Halo or Zelda. Now don't tell me that ports like GTA, Ratchet and Clank, Daxter, MGPO, among many are not fun games to play? The PSP has so much potential on what it can do, developers should and need to be more creative, just look at Final Fantasy's CC. It is truly one of the first games to try and bring out the PSP's full potential, and yes the PSP needs more original games like Dead Head Fread. People need to stop B*****n about no L & R 2 buttons and no second analog. The PSP has enough and the right amount of buttons for the moment. Well to end this I just got to say, if you don’t like the PSP, don’t buy one and keep playing your Pikapoo and keep on evolving your dildos. FYI David those clothes make you look like a beach bum.
by WarLord - 2007-09-26 07:36:40
Yes, Nintendo does sell

But there's a reason behind it: A) Their games target a larger audience (gamer and non gamer) B) The main target is children, and in this business, children will always outnumber the other target consumers. C) It's cheap. None of those reasons stated above suggests that Nintendo is better than the rest. It just means that their marketing strategy has attracted more consumers, thus statistically skewing the average sales in their favor. By comparison 100 million is a far greater number than 6 million. But 6 million alone is still outstanding. On another note, developers should consider how many people out of 100 million nintendo consumers will like games such as God of war, MGS, Virtua Fighter, etc before deciding to cross over to the console with the big sales record. There's a reason why there are people out there who choose 360 psp, and PS3 over Wii and DS. If developers are really smart, they'll pay more attention to what games are being sold on which consoles and work from there.
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-09-26 08:33:29
wow idiot quotes

"You can't assume it is going to be like the other platforms, because you are going to have Nintendo taking most of the sales. And if Nintendo really sees you as a threat, they will take the moves to wipe you out. They are not going to let you win." XBOX 360 isn't a threat with far more software sold than the Wii and PS3 sold combined? That same linup of N64 era mario games is going to hold up with last gen hardware and a gimmicky new controller they didn't even invent? Oh yes they came up with that Wii fit tilting board controller, that will surely wipe out the competition. Wow true innovation! A board that measures your balance and somehow encourages you to stay in shape. No, this isn't as useless as any other piece of exercise equipment. Some new stupid mario fitness game will surely follow. Nintendo got lucky and found a market full of idiot parents that think "wow this is neat" and see it's cheaper than the competition. So that's how they sell systems. No need to do anything truly impressive when you can find a market. Just like most childrens' toys, they're junk with little lasting value parents buy kids to get them to shut up and leave them alone. I don't care who this idiot is or what his opinion is or why people even listen to him, but I'm going to make him look stupid anyway.
by PSP_Trekster - 2007-09-26 08:48:44
This guy is a has been....

OMG Earthworm Jim!!! You use that as a example of his game programming godliness?? Sure it was a ok game but that was over a decade and then some ago?? PSP is 20 million + strong in just over 2 years, explain to me how this is a failure. I get so very tired of nobody spokemen and Nintendo/DS Trolls spouting off like they have a clue. Sony thank you for the first true consle experience in the palm of my hands, but seriously look at how nintendo markets and learn from it!
by logicbomb.de - 2007-09-26 09:12:17
lol

you were probably in diapers during the megadrive/SNES era. its not surprising you wouldn't know who he is
by yxxxx - 2007-09-26 10:30:47
?

yeah i dont see how anyone could claim the psp to be a failure. Its true it hasnt sold as well as the ds but really they are aiming at diffrent markets also nintendo has got only a few years head start on handhelds. There have also been a fair few new games and reinvented old games on psp.
by Manny151 - 2007-09-26 11:49:43
Chaoticgamer you're an idiot

just because the PSP isn't beating the DS doesn't mean that it's a failure. It's selling isn't it? Oh and Crisis Core is far from being the last good game on the PSP, God of War Chains of Olympus is on it's way too and you'd have to be a complete imbecile to say that it won't be a good game, or that it won't sell. As a matter of fact the people that made God of War for the PSP are also responsible for another great PSP title which is Daxter. The DS is a piece of ***** with substandard graphics, no multimedia functions and a catchy control scheme. It's for kids and that's why it sells so well. PSP is more like a console and so is it's audience. I use the multimedia features of my PSP all the time and use it with my PS3 for remote play as well as for it's own games which you'll never be able to reproduce on the DS. The graphics for the DS suck, plain and simple. They are horrible.
by Aestrea - 2007-09-26 14:32:15
well

this was sony's first handheld. Considering nintendo has had about 20 years to perfect this formula of theirs, I'd say sony's handheld future could look bright. IF they learn to market better, and get better 3rd party support. I have both psp and DS. The DS was fun, for a month. The psp is just now realizing it's potential, what with all this homebrew development and whatnot. I see good things to come for our friend the psp. ps. all sony needs to do is get Hiromichi Tanaka to make Chrono Break for psp. problem solved. DS who? gg
by JMS - 2007-09-26 16:22:38
marketing

The last psp commercial I saw was a few weeks ago. It was one of those "dude get your own" commercials.
by GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-09-26 20:45:46
I agree...chaoticgamer is a complete idiot...

First off, I own both a DS and a PSP...and they are both great systems in terms of design. I'm 20yrs old though, and the PSP has SO much more to offer for me. I own 92 PSP games (that's right, on UMD...not pirated), and I love them all. Altogether, I can count over 120+ PSP games that are great games, and that's out of about a list of 700 games from gamespot. On the other hand, I own 10 DS games (one being Zelda pre-ordered), and there are only another 5 games that I have any interest in. Now, the DS has a list of over 1000 games, and even if I boosted the # of games higher to twenty that I would call fun, thats 20/1000 games...that's HORRIBLE! 1/7 vs. 1/50 is a HUGE difference. The DS is full of nothing but child like games...and that's why it sells so well, its mostly geared towards children with a few exceptions. In every game type though, the PSP beats out the DS easily...especially in the RPG market, Sports, Adventure, Racing, etc...
by enigmaticdude - 2007-09-26 22:13:25
I don't agree

The PSP is not a failure. It is doing quite well when I last checked. I am so sick of freaking fanboy reviewers and biased console/handheld reviews. If you actually give the psp Half a fu(king chance, you will Fu(king realize that it is a damn great handheld. You have to remember that the psp is more than just games it is also a portable multimedia device. Most of all, Its real potential hasn't even been reached. Okay Ill give you this much, Nintendo has created success with the Wii And the DS and they are both very innovative in many ways.(HA! you can't call me a fanboy!!!) But i got bored within the first 2 hours of playing my friend's Wii. The gameplay is repetitive. Video game reviewers please get your heads out of your butts and be impartial to all gaming systems.
by enigmaticdude - 2007-09-26 22:17:55
There are some

If you watch the mountain dew bmx tour on nbc, They are sponsored by the psp. They always give psp commercials during the breaks
by KirbySS - 2007-09-27 06:07:17
.

Perry is right. The only hand-held to actually give the Nintendo line a decent competition must be a complete failure. No..wait..
by Barakku - 2007-09-27 08:28:42
Ironic

I just find this hellishly ironic, since so many games are Wii/PSP. That already says something about their level of hardware, and I guess if PSP's a failure, "Failures" of developers must like the Wii, too.
by Barakku - 2007-09-27 08:30:47
It's not

Nintendo. By this asshat's logic, that equals failure. You can't beat Nintendo, like he said. ...somebody oughta tell that to the PS2...and the old Playstation.
by Chaoticgamer - 2007-09-27 18:17:35
No Not an Idiot, Just speaking the Truth..

I never said I liked the DS better than the PSP, you just assumed I did because I said the PSP was a failure. Like I said 1/11 games are good for the PSP, thats like 40, and most of them are going to be pirated by people who have CFWs and Thank God there are some people who own actual discs. But tell me how many of those games do you actually play because most games in the US really stink right now because of pirates and why? Because the PSP was unprotected. Sony screwed up right there and selling a PSP slim was just a little boost for Sony's money. Developers are afraid to even look at the PSP. I give the PSP another 2 years unless Sony releases another PSP that is much lighter yet hackable. :p I have a modded PSP but I'm not going to steal from the developers who make great games like Crisis Core, God of War, Sora No Kiseki FC and Ratchet and Clank. Remember ppl buy the games at GameStop or any other game store or if you want a Japanese game buy it at play-asia they have a great selection. I'm sure most of the people in this website are pirates mostly because this place is to hack the PSP . Don't get me wrong I like this website its just that I don't know why people like to steal developers games. It wont help you, and it wont help the PSP. But like I said the PSP will not last unless they make the PSP more advanced by letting the PSP have the ability to play as well as the PS2. That would be a great achievement by Sony. But I doubt that would happen. Lets try to end the PSP soon and move on. (Dont pirate please.)
