David Hayter's involvement in Metal Gear Movie looking not so solid (yet)

To many a gamer, the name David Hayter rings a bell. Most of us would know him as the voice behind Solid Snake in the MGS series. But simply checking his IMDb profile will reveal that his resume's got more than that. He wrote the script for the first two X-Men movies and he's one of the contributing scriptwriters for the Watchmen movie.

So now that MGS4 is behind him, what's up for Hayter's future? In a video interview, he talks about what's up with the supposed Metal Gear movie - is it gonna happen or not? - and his not-so-direct-anymore involvement with it.

He cites that Hollywood politics eventually shot down his chance of penning the movie. However, it seems he just had some meeting about it with some movie people, and he's looking optimistic.

If you'll notice, he hesitates a lot by choosing specific words for his answer - a clear indication that he knows something and he's being careful not to spill anything. Later on in the interview, he also mentions that he's currently penning the script for the Lost Planet movie, as announced back in E3 2008.

» Hmmm

I don't care if David Hayter WRITES the movie or not, but he needs to voice Snake. I won't watch an MG movie without him as Snake

» Really

I don't see how a film without him would work! Hell, even if they cast someone else, they'd need Hayter to voice act and the put his voice over the fool they chose to play snake.

» I think

It would be ideal for David Hayter to play/voice snake, but I can't help thinking it would be a good role for Kiefer Sutherland... He has a similar-ish voice, and he already plays another hard-ass in Jack Bauer.

» Hollywood can suck it

Hollywood was always out to make the big dollar, and in return have made few good movies lately. An MGS movie would surely be a box-office smash. It wouldn't be much of a shock or disappointment to fans either because when it comes down to it, each and every MGS game was basically a movie. However, if Hayter was not cast as Snake, then the movie would probably be a flop. I mean, the CGI IS the game, so why not make a movie with it (there are already so many good CGI movies out already, so why not?). It would be totally kick-ass if they got the licenses to make every MGS game into a chronological series, filling in the gaps in the timeline with needed stories (such as the large gap between MGS3/MPO and Metal Gear). I could see serious potential in this movie, but only if Hayter, ne, the whole cast was played by their respective actors through which the games were played. Besides, if it's CGI, they've already got the 3D models and most of the environments and storylines, just hire the voice actors and you'll be alset! Hell, make the movie a damn Blu-Ray to shut Sony up and we'll all be happy.

» Ya screw hollywood

Yup I agree I don't care whether its in CGI like FF7AC or live action.

» Metal Gear?!

There's a lot of things they could do with the movie though, that wouldn't really need Hayter to voice Snake (although it would suck without him), I mean the movie could be like Snake's first mission, and he obviously would have a younger, non-rough voice during that time :)

Also, Hideo Kojima said not long ago that he'd make a tie-in game for the movie so it can be added within the series, and not like all the other movies that have nothing to do with the game.. so that there states that it isnt MGS1.

As for making CG movies, sure that would be awesome and I'm pretty sure Splinter Cell are doing it too, and I agree with that dude up there about CG movies to fill the gaps between MPO and MG1. They could expand on all of the characters... but I'd rather play them as games instead

» I just don't like him

Everybody seems to love him, I can't stand Sutherland usually. I'm not even sure why

You seen pictures of Hayter? He's actually not fat like most video game actors who play strong characters, he looks just like Snake too (they modeled Snake after him). With some training he could have the build Snake has in the games. Only question then is whether he's any good as a live actor on screen.

On a side note, anyone remember the movie/character that Big Boss and some parts of MG are partly based on, Escape from New York? lol main char looks just like Big Boss with the eyepatch and everything, and his name is Snake Plissken. If anyone has never seen it go check it out, it's like a Metal Gear movie.

» oops

I guess it might end up being CG, in that case he doesn't need to do live acting, but I'd deff prefer a live MG movie. That'd be badass

» ...

Could still go either way - Live action or CG. I still back Kiefer (I'm a hardcore 24 fan btw) if it's not CG. Also, the actor you're talking about is Kurt Russell.
