PSPPut on your sad face for today, we lay to rest another rumor. News about a PSP 2 (sometimes called next-gen PSP) coming out March next year made the circuits recently. The rumor stops here. Sony denied that a new version of its best-selling PSP is in development. The rumour was born on the pages of PSM magazine claiming the new PSP will be "thinner and lighter" than the current model and will have 8GB of memory. In an interview, Sony told GamesIndustry.biz, "We currently have no plans to release another version of the PSP." Amen.

» WTF?

They better NOT release a new PSP, because myself and a whole lot of other people bought ours recently. How would we feel if a new one just came out. I mean, Sony, get your act together, deliver us some good games!!! There is no point in making another handheld console, if it has just the same seveloper support like this one!

» Too Early

Well thats sucks even though last year today the psp was released in England so its a bit too early for a new psp

by john dozer - 2006-08-31 23:29
» who cares

If they release another PSP, that means no more updates so HOMEBREW w00t

But if they do they are dum idiots

this is great news

by Telefin - 2006-08-31 23:36
» Huhhuh.

I hope they don't release it in couple years.

by Josh - 2006-08-31 23:36

Thinner, Lighter, 8GB chip AND all for the same price? Get real.

The 8GB chips they ordered will be for the pro duos.

» It was never a "new PSP"

1. It was never a "new PSP" in the sense that it could do something the original couldn't do. It was simply integrating external accessories into the main unit. Nintendo does product refreshes roughly every 2-3 years. The PSP would have been out for over 2 years by the time the rumored changes were coming. People don't give Nintendo much slack because the changes are pretty much always an improvement.

2. Of course they're going to deny that it's coming. Look at it the same way as rumored price cuts. They're not going to announce it ahead of time because that could seriously affect sales of current units until the new one comes out. They want to maintain a constant stream of sales right up to the point of launching a new unit. That's sort of what happened with the DS. Sales really dropped off in the months leading up to the DS Lite. The difference is Nintendo didn't care because they sell gazillions of those things.

3. You think Sony didn't already start working on a replacement as soon as the original launched? You'd be kidding yourself if you thought that.

» no way!!

the cost of a 8 gb memory stick is about $400. but they sell them for much more , this story is busted( lol mythbusters)

by happy man - 2006-08-31 23:50
»

yippee thats good i want the next psp 2 come in 3 years

by Vipre77 - 2006-08-31 23:50
» I agree w/Josh

The 8GB chips will still likely cost as much or more than the rest of the PSP in spring next year. The 4GB chips are retailing for somewhere around $200 right now (eBay prices are not retail before anyone suggests that). That may sound contradictory to what I said above, but the included memory rumor isn't a deal-breaker for making a revised system. The PSP is expensive to build, so for cost reduction reasons alone, I'd expect something in the not too distant future. I see it as a necessary step for them to make any kind of price cuts that everyone is demanding.

» hey!!!

don't you want better!!

compare any other handheld console to the PSP,

they are way-way behind the PSP!!

they are toys, the PSP in NOT! :)

by ............ - 2006-09-01 00:17
» No way

If anything this 8 gig built in memory would be for a PSP2. The harddrive would isolate too many owners and besides, the PSP is already nice looking and they aren't exactly winning the handheld war. Which seems to be the trend for redesigns, winner gets to do a redesign.

Anyone Else Believe stuff that comes out of these corporate guys? We dont plan to release a new... (not right now, maybe next year)

THE EXACT SAME THING WAS SAID ABOUT DS, WEEKS BEFORE DS LITE HIT THE STORES. WHAT A JOKE.

Dude, the ps2 will have been out for over 6 years before the ps3 comes out, not 4.

by gabe - 2006-09-01 01:07
» sad?

Why would I be sad about Sony not releasing a new PSP? I would be feel cheating for wasting so much money on the current PSP only for it to become obsolete by a newer better model!

» Good

I am glad becuase a new psp would devalue the current psp and make it look old and would proberbly mean the death of homebrew on psp as we know it.

I like the psp the way it is why would you want to change it?????

by Glennlh - 2006-09-01 01:34
» But ...

Yes but sony would say this so people would still buy the original psp.

» Woot

That news has made my day!! Now i know that my PSP wont be out of date this March. Which means more updates and more stuff for the PSP. Woot!! I dont care what any one else thinks .

by prime - 2006-09-01 02:27
» Sounds textbook to me.,

Nintendo denied and denied over and over rumors of a DS upgrade up until the very day the DS Lite launched.

by shortboy - 2006-09-01 04:22
» yay!

I wouldn't want to waste $200 again on a system that I just bought only last year.

by Snarg - 2006-09-01 06:35
» #7

I think poster #7 is the only one here that has a clue.

And to put things into better perspective.

The date of the interview pre-dated the magazine ad, which makes it an irrelevant statement in regards to the ad, even if you did want to assume that they would tell the truth.

by DUH - 2006-09-01 08:00
» they arent stupid

why would they confirm a remake.. thats the same thing as saying "please don't buy the psp right now because we want dont want any profits until the remodeled one is out"

no one would choose the original over the remake..(except for homebrew)

by get a clue - 2006-09-01 09:08
» 8 GB vs 8 Gb

The rumor said 8 gigabits which is only 1 gigabyte of built in memory. Everyone calm down and stop quoting the retail price for a 8 gigabyte memory stick.

by yea - 2006-09-01 09:34
» yea

I bet they aren't releasing PSP 2 because the first one sucked really bad. I mean, come on. The graphics sucked, UMD's were useless, and there were too many dumb add ons and homebrew that looks like s.h.i.t. Hopefully they will never make the mistake of making another PSP ever again.

by cory1492 - 2006-09-01 12:36
» lol

"laid to rest" my arse.

2 weeks before DSLite was released, Nintendo "chiefs" went on record as saying no such thing was coming any time in the near future. Its not in their best interest to hurt current hardware sales by letting John Q. Public know that a redesign is in production.

by lawl - 2006-09-01 13:44
» sony isn't nintendo

nintendo lies even more than sony does. If sony says no remale is planned yet, then you take their word for it.

nintendo said the no remake thing all the way back when gba first came out. lawl. nintendo is teh big liarsz.

Major oldage. This rumor was confirmed fake last week by a Sony rep. C'mon, PSPU. If you're not posting stupid, irrelevent news (Anna S., I'm looking at you) you end up posting old news. The shame.
