Apple exec: iPhone is now, Nintendo DS and PSP are the past

Apple boss: iPod gaming better than DS and PSP - Image 1iD Software's Carmack once said that the iPhone is more powerful than the DS and the PSP combined. Adding insult to injury is Greg Joswiak, VP of iPod and iPhone Product Marketing for Apple

He says that iPhone gaming is doing extremely well, and that the Nintendo DS and the PSP are a thing of the past:

The biggest category of all in the apps store has been games. There are over 1,500 games and there's a great affinity between the iPod touch customer and those games.

And that's part of our positioning of it as the funnest iPod ever – you've got your music, your video, and your games.

[...] There are already so many games and as we look at it, to us it really seems this is the future of gameplay. Whereas a lot of these devices [he picks up Nintendo DS and Sony PSP] are more in the past.

He puts particular emphasis on the iPhone's competition with fellow touch-screen gaming platform, the DS:

The computer power and the 3D graphic power here [picks up iPod touch] is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up Nintendo DS]. So this allows people to do significantly higher quality games.

I think "fanboy" is the term you're looking for, but he does give some very good points. Me, I'd pick up an iPhone over a DS just because the DS can't play MP3s. Besides, Squeenix has a new Final Fantasy game in the works for the iPhone and I'm pretty stoked about it.

I own all 3 and I play 2 games on the iPhone, Monkey Ball and Pac Man - and the latter doesn't work all that well.

I wish people would get over the whole touchscreen phase, it really adds very little besides fingerprints. Yes, the iPhone has great graphics, but I can't see how they'd get Macross Ace Frontier running on it. Sometimes you just need a control pad and some buttons.

The main reason for the upsurge in iPhone gaming is low price point and iTunes distribution. The games themselves? Usually crap.

# couple ways to look at it...spankmaster 2008-11-11 08:10
If your looking at these handhelds and asking "which is more POWERFULL" then yes, the iphone has a significantly faster processor (around 500 or 600 mhz down-clocked to 430 something) and a very enhanced graphics capabilities. The only wiggle room for argument would be the graphical capabilities between the psp and iphone. But as far as a gaming device, no matter how powerful the iphone is, it will never be able to over come the physical capabilities in the sense that it has actually buttons, triggers, and the most important of all an analogue stick. while the iphone may arguable the most powerful mainstream portable device in common markets it really cant compete in the gaming aspect as far as true gaming device simply by design. and who knows, maybe apple whill have a huge launch of or a 3rd party developer will create a peripheral add on that encloses the iphone giving it 2 triggers buttons and the whole bit (making it look oddly like psp in shape AND size) which will give it controls like any other device. ( a controller dock if you will) Now that would make a serious threat to the market if it was marketed as a multimedia device separate from a phone service (i will never have simply because i will never use a supported carrier). So all in all theres a couple ways to look at this. in the sense of power, in which some of his statements hold reason and truth, in the sense of real world application, in which the application of a control-less platform is just not practical for large scale gaming, and in the sense of market, in which the device not marketed as a general product but as a contractual service based device would not have the number of units nor a large enough market necessary for developers to adopt and really focus on as main platform of sales and revenue especially in this case as there is no physical marketable input for it (aka umd, cartridge. although downloadable content is on the rise for sales, its still far too early to have strictly download based sales especially for a device with non expandable memory. There would be no way to keep a real library or large selection of games on hand which is key for a portable device). soo... ipod threat to gaming market..... highly highly HIGHLY unlikely...

The only thing Apple is toting is numbers. Mhz and number of games. Sure 1500 games is a lot, but how many are REAL games and how many are borderline Homebrew? Quantity will never beat quality. First and foremost the iPhone is a phone and the iTouch is an iPod. Apple may want them to be gaming platforms, but the fact remains people want iPods for music and iPhones for SmartPhone functions not to mention the prices of the two make it less appealing for gamers looking for a new system. The iPod Touch goes for $230 and the iPhone goes for $200 (both 8gig, assuming new 2 year contract with ATT for iPhone). The PSP is what? $100 core $130 bundle?

Apple and it's user base never seem to have a problem with arrogance, and they *always* seem to know the most about computers.

The iPod Touch is only $230? Still 50 bucks too expensive for what it's worth (and i'd rather get a 360 or a Wii for that money :D), but just goes to show how much you're getting ripped off if you buy an iPhone for $200 PLUS 2 year contract.

but anyone really willing to hear opinions on this subject will be willing to read it... hell il be honest usually i hate things this long...but i hear ya on this and IMHO you made it worth reading...

Also i support your opinion, i dont think the iPhone will go to the top...

Also take this into fact, i just did some math on the psp section of this site, in the homebrew game section alone there are over 2000 games... and considering that most of the iPhone games are just homebrew games... The psp does have quantity over them in HOMEBREW ALONE, AND THATS ONLY ON THIS SITE...so just a thought for some of you people who think the iPhone is going to rule the gaming district...please take a look for yourself at...

1. quality of their games

2. buttons...nearly every game has something like a button in it

3. media of the games

4. size of the games

5. screen size...you have to see the games too...

so...yeah, i dont think that iPhone is anywhere close to over-achieving the psp... or even the ds in that case...but imo not the psp...

You can't play good games with just a touch screen, anyone knows it except for Steve jobs and this little §£½&!

The PSP and the DS where made for gaming!

Do any of those lack buttons? No! They don't!

But then again, it's Apple and they have an incredible abillity to... make me really angry.

I wonder how much money Apple is wasting just to put some ads and article. Everybody knows that the iphone/ipod touch sucks on gaming. PSP and DS rocks! Heck even gameboy pwns apple. LOL. Anyway, what I like about apple is the itunes store which is cheap and LEGAL. Playstation got their own PSN store now and I'm just hoping the time will come when it'll be flooded with awesome game releases, apps, etc. on the PSN side. I'm sure it'll be cheap due to being a digital download since there's no package and UMD costs.

But if anyone want to give me an iphone (haha), I would gladly accept it. *waiting til apple bribes* (hehe)

He's got his head up his ass, out his mouth, and up his ass again.

The iPhone seems superior to the DS in every way, but its not a match for the PSP. Unless you like playing *****ty 2D games where you drag around objects with your finger.

Yeah, the DS lacks a bit, but if there's one thing I've noticed about the iPhone and iPodTouch is that they both have horrible controls for their touch screens.

The DS and basically any Palm device I've used have better touch than the Apple products.

Come on Steve, at least add a stylus. Game.Com (if anyone remembers) almost had better control. The lack of a stylus leaves them very inaccurate and blocks much visibility during play.

I'm a mac fan and even '''''I''''' know this is BS ~

I use to play games on my Dell Axim X51V pda. The gameplay on the Axim X51V is no where as good as on the PSP. The PSP with its buttons is a gaming machine. The Axim X51V was good for playing puzzle games and it still works great for viewing movies and surfing the internet. It would be nice if we had an updated CPU for the PSP maybe running at 624 Mhz. That way emulators for the N64 and others will run smoother.

I'll wait until there are two analog sticks ... and some triggers for either index finger. If they did that the iTouch would rock. ROCK! I don't understand why some folks take a good idea half way there. This iControlPad is a great idea ... just a little short. It should also be molded to my hands. I don't care about bulk. I want a personal game device that I can play for hours. So what if it had the foot print of a SLR and needed it's own camera bag. I'd buy the rhinestone studded bag for it and practice all sorts of iTouch gang signs. IMO and note that I leave out the H, the psp falls short for the same reasons. There have been some mediocre attempts to fix this in homebrew and third party products ... I mean ... Why doesn't the PSP look like a PS3 game controller with a kick ass screen in the center ... Screen could be detachable ... for folks who want to just watch movies ... and in that mode it would sport it's touch screen. F*+^ I'd pay as much or more then a console for something like that. And honestly ... the other problem w/ the PSP is the fact that Sony will let people release crap games for it. A remake is one thing ... but a crap 8 bit port should not be allowed. They should look at ***** games like that and think one thing ... this will kill our branding. Kill it.

Yeah and that's the cheapest one! The 16gig is $300 and the 32gig is $400. Keep in mind thats before taxes too. For $400 I can buy a good HDTV to compliment my PS3.

as it is now the iPhone will never be more than a gimmicky gaming system for a quick burst of games while on your lunch break or takin a dump. (i know i'm not the only to do that lol)

it cannot compete with a dedicated gaming system such as the psp and ds not only in quality of games but also in form factor. touch screen alone is not enough.

Now who the **** wants to go around with that thing in their pocket?

Why not just get a REAL phone and a PSP/DS instead; it's cheaper!

Besides it requires jailbreak + Apple will take a dump on it.
