QJ Guide:The PMP Movie format |
Ó

Okay, it seems like there's been a bit of confusion around how to play PMP Movies, and how to convert ordinary movies into the PMP format. The aim of this guide is to clear up all this mess with the different versions, and tell you how to convert your run of the mill videos into full resolution PMP videos.
Step 1: Lets start with the PMP versions. Yes there are many variants. Here's a list of PMP Mod versions along with explanations as to which one to use. In order for you to complete this FAQ you will need at least one of these files. (*) Indicates the recommended download for the average user on each firmware.
1.5 fw
*Download: [PMP Mod v2.01 subtitle mod for fw1.5] & - Get this version if you have 1.5 firmware and want to convert ordinary video files to play on your PSP. Also includes subtitle support, but for the simplicity of this FAQ you should download this version even if you don't want subtitle support.
Download: [PMP Mod AVC v1.02 subtitle mod for fw1.5] - Get this version if you want to convert AVC video files to the PMP format. If you have no idea what AVC video is, chances are you don't need it, so get PMP Mod v2.01.
2.0-2.6 fw
*Download: [PMP Mod v2.01 subtitle mod for fw 2.0-2.6] - This is the recommended version for those using the eLoader. Also includes subtitle support, but for the simplicity of this FAQ you should download this version even if you don't want subtitle support. NOTE: PMP Mod AVC is currently not available for firmwares 2.0-2.6.
Step 2: Install the PMP files to your PSP. If you've installed PSP homebrew before, follow the same procedure.
Step 3: Download a Muxer to convert video files to the PMP format. These are universal and therefore it doesn't matter which firmware you are on.
*Download: [PMP Mod v2.01 Muxer] - Download if you have PMP Mod v2.01 on firmwares 1.5 or 2.0-2.6
Download: [PMP Muxer AVC v1.01] - Download if you have PMP Mod AVC v1.02 on firmware 1.5
Step 4: Download my PMP Mod Conversion pack and unzip it. This pack includes everything you need to encode high-quality
PMP movies.Step 5: Copy the PMP_Muxer executable that you downloaded in Step 3 to the same directory as the extracted files from the PMP Mod Conversion Pack.
Step 6: Now you have everything you need to convert and play PMP videos on your PSP! Your directory should now look like the image to the right.
To encode your PMP Movies, run the executable named "PMP Simple". This program was written by miemt11 back in January and I have found this to be the easiest way to convert movies into the PMP format. Click open to find the file you wish to convert, and then Save to in order to specify where to save the output PMP file. All of the other options are not necessary. If you know what they do and wish to customize it then go ahead, otherwise just click the Encode PMP button in the bottom right corner of the screen to get started!

Step 7: Copy your PMP Video over to your PSP in the directory x:/PSP/Video and load up the PMP Mod on your PSP. Enjoy your viewing!
This process may seem long, but after you have all the files in the correct places it is very easy to use; and I find it much quicker to convert video files into PMP format rather than PSP MP4.

Thank you, I think many 2.0+ people will appreciate this, because it has just made working for them. Way to go!
i followed the instructions but pmp simple causes an errorwhen double clicked

Thanks for this guide mate. I would say that 1.5 users should get AVC (aka. h264/x264 CORRECT ME IF IMWRONG !) Since it's smaller than xvid that the normal PMP is using (again im not 100% sure). I havent really seen any tests on h264 vs. xvid but from what i have seen myself irl, the difference is so small it wouldnt matter.
if u have problems like comment 2 like i did, use 3gp direct converter....it is much easier...
1.download 3gp direct converter...
2.download transcoding.ini and replace it with the one provided inside the folder on step 1...
3.download pmp_muxer and place it in the 'core' dir in the 3gp direct converter..
4.run the program..
Have Fun!!! =)
PMP Simple converter was nice for a while but it's so old and outdated by now not to mention other programs that are both easier to understand (despite not being as "simple") as well as faster.
My pick would be AVItoPMP, the interface is very intuitive and comfortably set up, it's simple yet powerful with advanced options that don't need to be tinkered with unless you want to and it's really fast.
u can find transcoding.ini on dl.qj.net just search it... =)
Hai "hey" where can I get the transcoding.ini, the one you are talking about? :)
Hey "hai" did u search for it as I said?
Is pmp moe highly compressed than mp4

Alright, so this says how to convert to nomal PMP files, but still says nothing about making AVC PMP files. PMP Simple makes normal 2.0 PMP files, with no AVC option. This still leaves those of us who can't make AVC PMP files no where as there is no "easy program" to make AVC PMP files. and since my computer doesn't understand AviSynth script (even though AviSynth is installed) I'm stuck.
here's my question:
does "PMP Mod v2.01 subtitle mod for fw1.5" contain anything not present in "PMP Mod AVC v1.02 subtitle mod for fw1.5" ??
or is "PMP Mod AVC v1.02 subtitle mod for fw1.5" the same as "PMP Mod v2.01 subtitle mod for fw1.5" plus extras?? so theres really no reason at all to download/use ""PMP Mod v2.01 subtitle mod for fw1.5" ???
yes/no? differences? anyone?
Don't see anything that explains how to convert PMP movies with a Mac. Is this PC only?
this is one of the lousiest guides u will see for encoding so dun follow it...
for easy AVC conversion us the latest XVID4PSP its one of the better application right now for AVC pmp. it very easy to use the application also.it also has pmp2.0 encoding
actually this guide has been very helpful to me with converting wmvs to pmp and running them
thank you so much for this tut. I am finally playing the halo 3 trailer with good speed and synchronized sound! I had some problems with bugs and error reports in the past, but finally i have it working just right!
looks like homebrew developers have beaten $ony at media playing on the psp. Homebrew wins again!
sorry "Hey" I found it yes :) thanxz
its working great..
PMP Simple REQUIRES "Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0". For all the double click error peeps.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en
OR
Use internet explorer to goto Microsoft Windows Update site.
Please before posting a question actually read the Guide - after all, that is the point of it.
If you download the PMP Mod AVC Muxer and install that into the same directory as PMP Simple converter it will convert to AVC.
PMP Simple converter is nothing more than a user-friendly GUI. The Muxer file still does the hard work, so PMP Muxer AVC will still convert to AVC format if that is the Muxer installed.
And as #18 said please download the .NET Framework version 2.0 if you get errors running PMP Simple. I kinda assumed that everybody would have it already, but obviously they have not.
How do I apply the subtitles?!
Have tried both .srt and .sub placed in the VIDEO folder with the same name as the movie (American Psycho)
Any clues?
Is there any way to convert *.MLV files to PMP ?
I never understanded how to work this thing. Thank you.
Thanks for this nice tutorial, I hope you don't mind if I put a link here on my website :)
#13: The AVC version is a standalone version, which ONLY handles AVC format videos, while the normal version ONLY handles DivX/XVid enocded pmps. If you're asking why this is neccessary: AVC decoding uses the internal functions of PSP which in turn make use of the ME (Media Engine). However, the media engine is customly programmed on the normal version for performance increase, and therefore the two versions conflict with each other.
#20: a) is your .sub named file really MicroDVD format? (each line formatted like {start}{end}tex t)
b) which version of the subtitle mod do you use?
Anybody get the AVC to work? It look like its working fine but never outputs a file.
i cant get it to download it starts and gets to like 95% and then just stops. is there a different place to download it from?
Why would you want to use this instead of the formats supported by the psp firmware (avc)?
Because the standard supported formats are limited - it will not allow you to play full resolution (480x272) movies. That is why everyone is crazy about PMP - you can create your own videos that look just as good (if not better) than UMD movies.
"pmp muxer can not be found"
and yes i did download extract the muxer into that folder.
"pmp muxer can not be found"
and yes i did extract the muxer into that folder.
i just googled the muxer and found it
It doesn't display subtitles :(... help..
i fixed it. just Renamed it from PMP Muxer to PMP_Muxer
Hey ...for whpever wrpte the artile and the person who suggested 3gp , thanx a bunch...now i can watc vids on my psp...great guide .
"It doesn't display subtitles" tells me not really much. Neither about what kind of subtitles you tried (file extension and format - is it really MicroDVD? There are different formats using the .sub extension), nor which version you are referring to. Are you using PMP Mod 2.01 FW1.5, or FW2.0+ or using PMP Mod AVC? Please specify.
what about 2.7
I'm having the same problem as #24......when I try to encode AVC everything seems to be going fine, but then there's no pmp file output when its done.
I'm using PMP Mod 2.01 FW1.5 and microdvd subtitles with both .sub and .txt extensions. I see subtitles in pmp file list next to the movie, I just can't make it work. I tried different frame formats [ and { also (. nothing works :(. both video and subtitles names are the same. I really need these subtitles because my english is really bad..
I checked again the binaries provided here, and I couldn't find anything wrong with the subtitle display.
Here are the only things that could avoid the display of subtitles:
1) Your subtitle file doesn't have .sub extension or isn't named correctly after the video (ie. video.pmp needs video.sub in the PSP/VIDEO folder)
2) Your subtitle file has a wrong format (not MicroDVD - ie "{start}{end}tex t" in every line)
3) You don't have the font10.f in the PMPMOD folder where the eboot is, so no font is loaded.
If you are sure you correctly fullfill all these cases, then please send me your subtitle file to raphael
AVItoPMP supports AVC too :) But it's not so fast as divx/xvid encoding...
people try also MediaCoder
1st. get it from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mediacoder/MediaCoder-0.5.0-pre2.zip?download
2. get plugins. THNX(optimus) from http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/dev_psp.zip
and put the dev_psp.dll in MediaCoder's plugins folder
3. now run MediaCoder.now Add avi and go for devices and then for GAme console. hoooohoo ;D
add the new pmp muxer to the MediaCoder\tool s directory
.. ;D
Well, you seem to know what you're doing, so I'll ask you : )
I also am having problems with this PMP Simple technique ( I used Xvid4PSP but I'd rather use PMP Simple if possible since it has more options and might be faster encoding). When I try to encode AVI movies to AVC PMP, the PMP Simple GUI seems to be running fine, but in the end after it's done, there's no PMP file to be found! Do you know what I might be doing wrong? I followed the guide above exactly, only I renamed "pmp_muxer_avc" to "pmp_muxer" so it would look exactly like the Step 5 picture on the guide (when it was named "pmp_muxer_avc", PMP Simple didn't seem to recognize it). any help is appreciated!

Dude did u try it with MediaCodertools ?
Nice guide. Im new to pmp and I just started converting my xvid files to PMP. I have a Core duo laptop and the coversion speed is quite amazing thanks agn.
No, I haven't tried MediaCoderTools yet, maybe I'll go DL it. Is it pretty quick and simple?
ok NM I dl'd mediacaodertool s....i really like the PSP interface, but it's taking like 35 minutes to encode a simple 4:3 16 MB video. Is it normally this slow or do I have a wrong setting? either way, I like this program.
ok, using MediaCoderTools , I just finished transcoding a 16 mb video into PMP AVC, but the file ended up being 124 MB!! NO wonder it took so long......I must be doing something wrong.
help...?
whats this error mean?
Error:
"pmp_decode_open : number_of_frame _buffers < 4"
Press X
i have tried all kind of pmp converter and MediaCoder was the best.

1st. get it from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mediacoder/MediaCoder-0.5.0-pre2.zip?download
2. get plugins. (THNX optimus) from http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/dev_psp.zip
and put the dev_psp.dll in MediaCoder's plugins folder
3. get jonnys latest muxer
(get the AVC muxer)
http://jonny.leffe.dnsalias.com/
and put it MediaCoder tools folder
4. now run MediaCoder. Add avi and go for devices and then for GAme console. hoooohoo ;D
u can aslo try editing the settings as you whant.
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. I'll try your method out!!!
My problem just might be that I didn't have all the plug ins.....my computer's pretty fast. : )

did it a bit differently, but the guide gives a good start...
first off - thanks for the downdater project folks, 'cos i wouldnt be able to use pmp mod otherwise...
for the record - using firmware 1.5
anyway, using the following from jonny's homepage - the avc mod and muxer, and the command line version of h264 that is the binary on his page.
now to use the command lines on his page, which i did, you have to have a working avs script. i did this using gordian knot - go to doom9.net and download the latest GordianKnot.RipPack.Setup.2.exe. read the guides @ doom9 if you need help...
in limited testing, the second command line looks better to me (higerbitrate, too)...
oh, i used the encoder in gknot to do the audio (azid + lame), and then just load the video and audio in the avc muxer, and copy the resulting pmp files to the psp/video dir...
also looks like old pmp (xvid) files can be played on the new avc mod, but i didnt try (they show up in the menu)...
excellent work - fullscreen res/23.976 framerate
many thanks.

anyway...
two more things...
1 - here is the webpage to get all this stuff (jonny's homepage)

2 - here is the output from a test run using the two commandlines jonny suggests
