P-TV | Portable TV service website

The ability to download high-resolution PSP formatted AVC video through the P-TV service has been one of the highlights of PSP gaming for many Japanese gamers, but unfortunately, Sony hasn't even thought about bringing the service to the U.S. or other territories across the globe - or have they?

Using this guide, courtesy of IGN's nixice, you can browse the P-TV website on any computer with an internet connection (no Japanese IP address required), and using a temporary account, browse through the store and download free videos, some of which are in English!

You don't have to be fluent in Japanese either, as with a quick glance at this tutorial and a bit of patience, you too could be watching full resolution 480x272 AVC video on your PSP; previously only possible using homebrew and converting your own video. all thanks to P-TV Japan. The trick is to identify which content you would like to watch and wouldn't mind listening to in Japanese rather than downloading some feature length film which you won't understand.

PC Download

The first thing to note is that this process has only been tested on Internet Explorer 7 and doesn't work on Firefox or appear to work on Safari.
  1. Connect your PSP via USB cable and enable the USB connection.
  2. Go to the P-TV site and choose the second menu option as indicated below
  3. Get your free videos here!

  4. Scroll down the page and select from the categories which can be found on the left hand side. The Japanese > English translation of the category list can be found below.

  5. P-TV 2

  6. Click on the "More" button when you find something that you fancy, and this will then bring you to a screen which shows the running time, the aspect ratio, and cost. Justv make sure that the costs displayed is ¥ 0.
  7. Click the giant, red download button, and log in with the details found below:
    Log in details

Then you'll see an English dialog box (finally!)  where you select the location of your PSP to download your video into, and as soon as the download completes you can enjoy full-resolution PSP video at no cost! Aren't we good to you? Just remember, most of the videos are Japanese, and depending on the DRM may expire within 7 days.

As an additional note, this process requires ActiveX control, so those who haven't installed it yet will have to go ahead with the installation.

Enjoy!

» PSP Download Recommendation & Custom Firmware Note

Just a few notes:

- If you don't like IE or having troubles with it, just hit the www.P-TV.jp site on your PSP and follow the guide above (note that the Genre and Category menus are on the sidebar via pulldowns rather than up top.)

- Some have said that Custom Firmware has caused problems downloading these clips either on PSP or over USB. So, if you can't win with one or the other, you might not be a winner.

- This isn't actually new News, unfortunately. P-TV.jp has had full-res videos up for months downloadable, and yet there's still no software that compresses to 480x270 and there was no change in whether or not PSP allowed handmade 480 video when 3.00 rolled around. So, if you're hoping that because these clips are new to you that this is an indicator that Sony will finally loosen up the restrictions, not the case; However, if you're getting the thought that maybe those restrictions might not actually be there (like, maybe the reason 480x270 video won't play on a standard PSP is the same reason why legit AVC that plays in the MP_ROOT folder won't play in the new Video folder), you might be onto something...?

I've got a few clips and they work great on 3.03OE-A, Just wonder if any hackers out there could crack this so we can convert our own vids in this quality (which looks extremely good on the PSP).

PS: Japanese Girls Are Hot!

» Parse away if you can

If you get the chance, try pulling apart the files or testing with them, they're really interesting. For one, even the 4:3 videos display as 480:270 (which is odd, sounds like the pixel ratio is in the text rather than read on the machine?), and also, if you play it in VLC, you'll see that the thumbnail is actually inside the video as a separate stream.

» Worldwide availability

Q: Are Sony releasing Worldwide?

A: They are reported to be trialling in Japan. If things turn out well we might see the service rolled out Worldwide.

» I have a white japanese PsP!

I have the P-TV icon under the network on the xmb, and it basically takes me directly to the site. At first i had no idea what it was until i went to official Japanese site and saw that is was a site for downloading content.

» XMB Icon for P-TV

I have a jap - white psp and I have an icon below web browser in the XMB titled "P-TV" and it links straight to a psp portal for the site. This first appeard when i was using devhook but it also apears in 3.03 oe-a because of my jap flash1. Any US psp should be capable of using this if you go into the recovery menu and over-ride the psp as japanese instead of default(US). hope this helps but I havn't tried on a us psp.

» Bored stiff...

Why da hell does everything done by Sony have to be so complicated and so damn badly design ???

Anyway, I have a white japanese psp (if ever it was suppose to make a difference...), I have been trying to download one damn free video from p-tv, and it says me testmast@b44/test01 must be some kind of bad, blacklisted or something like that. Anyway, is there any way to register a new account on p-tv ? I just wished I learned japanese :/

I just realised that Sony will probably be spying on your computer if you install the Video Downloader...

I closed just as a I clicked the ActiveX thing so I'll probably be safe...

The activeX control is just for the XMLHttpRequest object (AJAX.) Its only needed in Internet Explorer, Firefox users dont need to worry about it.

Im acctually suprised that the author of this didnt have it installed already, TONS of sites use AJAX nowadays.
