Give Your PSP a Face Lift

HardOCP's console division has released a tutorial on a simple mod that can give your PSP a fresh look. The biggest issue facing a PSP player is the button mashing smears all over the face plate. Using a Flat Black face plate they picked up online, they gave their PSP a face lift and helped prevent further button mashing smears. At $35 it's a nice change.

Read on for the full tutorial.

Watch out folks, I have the matt black asterix and it is really their gunmetal black version with a matt coating on it without primering or sanding first...

it came off after 6 hours off playing!!! (where you put your thumb at the cross button, and no I'm not sweaty) and became shiny..! I took some polish and a cloth, and a bit later I had a shiny gunmetalblack asterix faceplate...

No offence to asterix, I understand nobody bought the gunmetals, but do some primer or sanding first...

The other asterix faceplates are really great!!!

Also the gunmetalblack is really nice and also not so "fingerprinty", but matt is really...

btw I sanded the "not so" matt really lightly so the caoting would attach, and gave it a couple of layers matt clear coating... looks great again...

the flat black was supposedly redesigned.

Im gonna see if I cant just get someone to do a quick sandblast pass over the control areas in a diamond shape... (got the metallic black XCM faceplate to do it to as well ;0)

To the question, "That´s pretty cool!

Question: Are those metal buttons?" I don't think they are. They are probably the same buttons as the original ones but a different color.

This mod is cool, but I wouldn't like to take my own front of my PSP off just to put a new one on.

I put a new faceplate on my PSP almost 2 months ago. I got the light blue one by XCM. It works great, although the screen was slightly small so i couldnt use the HORI screen protector. So now the screen is scratched up again. I ordered another one today, same color and everything, but Pelican will be replacing my brick with a screen protector, so it should stay in better condition this time. from the stories i read, XCM is much better than Asterix ones, although they arent as customizable as far as buttons, and the screen itself cant be replaced.

you paint them (sorry), bit of an operation.... have to take the screen and bracket out, and the right control print as well... also the parts where the switches are, are very thin so be carefull, and look carefully how there're attached...

the sides gonna get a silk matt finish when totally dry..

right now I'm thinking about smoothing the baseplate and (car)laquer it a few times to make it as shiny as the original top (and put that back on)....

i bought a clear face on ebay about 3 months ago. it came all the way from china i think its bootlegged. well , i know it is but so wut! it looks sick all clear with all clear buttons. not good when someone is playing my psp (they cant tell which button is which) but its not for others its 4 me. word of advice, KEEPING THE LCD CLEAN AND LINT,DUST FREE BEFORE PUTTING THE NEW FACE ON IS A REAL BIZNITCH !!! i took it off many times to get that "last lil stubborn spec of dust out. pain in da a$$

The one in the article looks like mine. I've got the red button set from liksang, cost about £8 I think including postage.

And the above poster is right, every damn time I put the facplate on, I got dust trapped under the screen.

TIP - make sure you wash your hands, or wear some rubber gloves or something, pesky finger prints!

Better buy 'em cheap while you can....E-mail from decalgirl:

"...Our flat black faceplates are on back order for the next 3-4 weeks so that

may influence your decision. Also the facplates are going up in price with

in the next month or so. The manufacture has increased their prices. "
