TheMarioKarters, Vaza, youresam and Popcorn Devil have released a new version of their amazing homebrew game eagerly anticipated by all - Sonic Battle Arena, updating it to include online play thanks to netlib and youresam! This makes SBA the PSPs first online fighting homebrew title, and boy does it live up to the title. In Sonic Battle Arena, the ultimate Sonic fighting game coded in Lua, you control one of 5 Sonic characters currently available: Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Cream or Amy; fighting to the death as it is against your opponent.
The game itself is pretty simple to pick up and play, using the D-pad for movement, X button to attack and O to jump. You may have been playing against a computer in the last release, but now you get to fully test your skills up against real humans. This is still a beta, so expect some bugs. The only negative I can find from this game is that you don't know who you are playing against, neither can you talk to them. Surely if your playing against either TheMarioKarters, Vaza, or Popcorn Devil you're going to lose!
Here's what TMK said:
What happens is, once you press R at the main menu, you select your character with the D-Pad, then press X. You'll then connect to Netlib using Connection 1. Be sure your WLAN switch is on! After you select your character, two things can happen. If someone is waiting, you will join them. If no one is waiting to play, you will wait for someone to join. To cancel waiting for someone, press start, dont do anything else.

The Damage system is always:
Your health on the left, enemies on your right, never the other way, even if you are player 2.
The Attack lasts about 3 seconds:
2 Seconds building up spin speed, so the attack becomes stronger, and 1 second slowing down, until the attack becomes too weak to do damage.

I downloaded this game and it sucks a ss bad. this is one of the worst games ever made if yu even want to call this a \"game\" a 5 year old can make a better game than this. does the connection have to be named connection 1? cause when the connection has a name it gives that error that i got.

I restored default settings and still doesnt work. It might be because im on 1.5 using the 1.0 eboot thanx to the custom firmware. I'll try the 1.5 eboot.

well... you lose your network connection when you restore defaults so you have to go in and make a new one. other than that you should just name the connection "connection 1" which should be the default name for the connection. if it still dont work try reinstalling the 1.5 files(make sure you delete all the old ones first)
if none of that works then i dont know what to tell ya.

im on 2.6, when i try to play online it just sits at the connecting...... screen. is there a server/lobby screen or does it just connect to the first person it sees.

i don't know what the hype is all about but this game kind of sucks. i played it and it is really boring. You guys should concentrate on making a real eboot game and not one of these lua games like everyone and their mother have been making. This game is weak and I think everyone have seen alot better and wish qj.net wouldn't post these stupid lua games on their site.
Why don't you just get off your !@# and do it yourself, maybe then you will realise how hard all this stuff is. It boots straight from the game menu, I don't see what your problem is.

The downfall of lua is that it's open source, with no way to compile. In miniutes of coding I could fly around the screen at will. You need better 'hack' protection.
We are aware of that #47 and have a way of fixing that with the next release. This release was only released as a beta, showing what we had done and we needed a bit of help finding bugs.
If anyone does come across a cheater in the game, please press START to exit back to main menu and find a new game. This way the cheater doesn't get any fun.
This game is pretty neat : ) just a few suggestions I think would make the game cooler
1)instead of saying "sonic" has joined room, display the psp's nickname
2)more attacks
3)3 and 4 player rooms
4)some way to connect with a specific person so you can also play people you know

If it takes 5 minutes, go make a copy of this yourself and prove it. What's so stupid about this game? It's much better than anything you'll EVER code.
It's launched straight from the game menu, comes with a custom coded lua player, has had 2 servers put up for online play, AI, collision, plus plenty of other things you wouldn't be able to do.
Be thankful that we're doing this for free, we've been making this game for a long time now just to make other people happy and have fun, not to have some stuck-up !@#holes comment on how crappy lua is. Why can't you just appreciate what people do for you?
I agree with the other comments that lua isn't worth crap. This and all other games made inlua is dumb and stupid. I downloaded this game and now I wish I didn't because it really sucked. Like the other people have been saying, anyone can make a stupid lua script in 5 minutes to do the same thing this "game" does. I wouldn't even call this a game. Because of this, I am now not returning to qj.net because they are the only ones who post these stupid lua games on their front page. I wsh they would just stop and actually play these stupid games before they post them on the front page. Once they play them, they will realize that these dumb lua games suck and it is a waste of space to post about them or even download them. Learn a real coding language then people might give your games a chance. This games sucks balls.

i want to see at least one person who says this game sucks and could be made in 5 minutes to do the same thing make a whole new game from scratch in only 5 minutes. i will personally get on aim with you and time you.it couldnt be made in 5 minutes... not even an hour for that matter. If you dont like lua bypass it. nobody forces you people to read every single article.
i do admit that there is too much hacking going on and that this game does need a lot of work. The collisions arent very good and there are not enough attacks in the game to make it worth while. the challenge is pretty much... which ball can touch the other ball longest at its peak damage point(not to mention people edit this and make it so that 1 hit kills you).
and lua does suck but if you are just learning to code it is fun and helpful to learn it. It could be a good language but too many people are idiots and like to edit the game so that they always win and also it is too easy to hack. some people like to say that most people dont even know how to edit lua... its not that hard considering any lua app/game that i dl shows up with a notepad icon when i look at it on my computer. all it takes to open it and edit it is a couple clicks. and now i am tired of typing...

We are going to make the game anti-cheatable in the next version, so those using notepad, you're going to be kissing the people who play fairly's asses. The Dev's have got our own version, making a cheater auto-lose when we meet you.
You can't say Lua sucks when when it can do wifi, IR and 3D. It's just the quality of most games that come out.
You can barely call this game "total crap" when it's the first online fighting game for the PSP ever, as you have nothing to compare to. If you think lua is too crap for you, that's fine, but don't come here winging about it.
