Framerate has finally allowed us a peak into his PSP homebrew project, Shining Fantasy. After 14 months of keeping the project under wraps, though constantly talking about it, he's finally released the first preview of his work-in-progress RPG engine.

The project opens with Mog (that friendly Moogle from Final Fantasy) in the forest in Hyrule. He then finds Ceres, another FF character, and strikes a conversation as to why they are in the land of all-time classic Nintendo title, Legend of Zelda. Being directed to the North, Mog then meets Terra, yet another FF local, who then tells him that he is supposed to battle it out with dragons and other vicious creatures, as he wanted. However, as Framerate has disabled battle at this point, all that we were allowed to view was an image of how a battle will actually look like.

While the battle code is programmed in the preview, Framerate has expressed that he had a few different reasons why he had to disable it. Now we're not privy as to what those reasons are. But rest assured, Framerate promised the battle code will be in preview two.

So in sum, the preview demonstrates the beginnings of the movement/collison engine as well as some primitive dialogue features. The controls, so far, have proven to be rather simple. The control pad moves, x button confirms, and Select quits the game inside the main game.

We don't have much to work on for an in-depth review just yet, given the limited access the preview provided. But still, this project looks fun and promising. So, check it out for yourself and feel free to throw in your own ideas on what you want to see in this RPG for PSP. Framerate will surely appreciate that. In the meantime, here are some screenshots to tickle your tastebuds from Shining Fantasy.

» Hmm

This really isn't much for 14 months. The only work you've done is programming, and 14 months for this?... you mustn't have spent too long on it. I haven't tested it, but from what I've read and can see, it's not much - but it looks like it works from the screenshot, so good job.

» Is that the best you can do?

come on man, look at those screenshots, you honestly cant think that people will download it,nobody uses homebrew anymore, and besides, crisis core, final fantasy is coming out later on in the year,if i wanted a good rpg game,id buy that instead,oh come on you people, you work on these nintendo 64 emulators and new 3D homebrew games, but they just dont have anything good on them,i mean, come on,he's been working on this for about twelve months and that's all he can come up with?i was gonna get a homebrew psp but i saw the 2D games and the crappy 3D ones so i just said"screw that, they're nuthin but s.h.i.t" so tell me,why cant you get a decent homebrew game onto the psp,is it because of lack of space from the 32 megabyte stick,or is it just because you're more interested in what every other consoles doing, whatever it is,put some goddamn effort into your games,i hate homebrew,do you hear me,I HATE HOMEBREW,and i dont care if you's all get sewed by sony, you all deserve it,nobody uses homebrew, there's only about 50,000 psp owners who us it,the other 20,000,000 run on V2.80,we dont like you, why,it's because you *****ed up the psp and decreased their sales that's why,but back to the point,MAKE YOUR F.U.C.K.I.N.G GAMES MORE BETTER LOSERS!!! SUCK ON MY NUTS!

» Nice work

Its just a preview/snipet of what Framerate has coded Appreciate someone using their on time to keep the homebrew scene alive.

Oh yeah ethan we don't care what you think. If you hate homebrew so much then why post in this website.

"it's because you *****ed up the psp and decreased their sales"

When people buy gadgets it theirs to do anything they want.Whether it be shoving it up your ass, playing games, not playing games or homebrew. All everyone did was pay for the PSP, we didn't sign a contract with sony to buy 5 psp games a year to make it look like their games are selling well.If its good enough i'm sure people will buy it.

Get a life and Go Home

Nice work Framerate ;)

» To no 4.

Congratulations ! You win 'best moaner and bull***** talker' award!

Do you have any idea what its like to create a game?

No? Just as i thought.

Do you even know how to print a line of text in any coding language? No.

Do you know how many people and how much time and how much resources, the Commercial PSP Games use? Judging by your stupidity, i wouldn't be surprised if you were 11, and if you were older, i wouldn't be surprised if you got 0 GCSE's, and dropped out of school and now is 35yrs old and still lives with his mama.

And you think, 1 person, who has been working in this for probably half the time the game has been in development, because he has a LIFE(which you, judging by your comment, must not have).

If you don't like it, why don't you, go and buy(or steal, since you probably aint got a job) a game that you like, AND ***** OFF! Go back to your caravan house and don't log on to pspupdates, cos u obviously don't like homebrew, so leave! whats your problem? why are you still here? *****.

I can't believe the stupidity of some people.

Nice work Framerate, good luck with the RPG.

» Really bad

Sorry to hear that this game is really bad.

by demologik - 2006-08-21 02:00
» you done it..

seriously dude, stfu and get off here.. obviously yer a noob when it come to the psp. the psp's 32 mb memstick is not INTERNAL MEMORY.. its upgradable to what, 4 gb now?! so that just shows you don't know wtf yer talkin about. second, as posted above, it takes MANY MONTHS for a dedicated TEAM of people to create a commercial PSP game, not to mention how many people that have to test out the games for bugs before it can be released ON TIME.. so obviously it would take ONE PERSON a lot more time to create a playable game.. this gey had to write the STORYLINE from scratch, then implement all the functions and graphics and code in a short time.. I'd like to see yer noob @ss attempt to do something remotely similar in the same amount of time, and have an INTERESTING storyline, AND implement a functional engine to run it off of. seriously, you punk noob b!tches piss me teh f*ck off when you come in here talkin down on these people who take time out of their personal lives to create something for OTHERS to use and haave fun with without asking for ANYTHING in return.

good work bro, F*ck the haters. keepat it, this sounds like a very good concept for a storyline.

by Gimlyly - 2006-08-21 02:38
» @4

Why the heck did you go and do that??? Learn2write sentences noob.

by Pal - 2006-08-21 02:39
» Very cool!

Something like an RPG Maker Portable, just a tad user-unfriendly. I'm sure that some creative minds out there will make good use of the engine, good times!

by Strangler - 2006-08-21 04:23
» re

so is the fighting engine customizable with this or is it forcing turn absed battle and you cant do a zelda type game on it?

by dro - 2006-08-21 04:56
» why doesn't everyone listen to #4?

» lol @ 12.

this is looking good; hey framerate have you come up with a storyline? or at least part of a storyline? lol. i voted for you. looking forward to a finished product.

You used 31 commas, NOT including the ones you used for numbers (e.g. 12,000,000)

You didn't use a single period to end a sentence, which means your comment is one LONG run-on sentence (untill the end when you used all those exclaimation marks (or "DIS MARK MAK ME LEWK SMRT LOL!11!1" for dumbasses like yourself. Go back to elementary before talking like you're some tough ***** on the internet.

On the game: from the screen shots it looks like you lazily grabbed sprites and maps and threw it together in a night, I'm not sure if I can believe it took 14 months to produce this. Create everything yourself. That's what real game programmers do. Keep working on it and create something you can happily say you did 100% yourself.

» to ethan

ur just pissed because ur one of the few dumb asses who upgraded to 2.8 loser go play your 40$ games while i play free games for life

by framerate - 2006-08-21 14:52
» hmm

Normally I don't reply to these because the author will likely never see it.. but..

"Create everything yourself. That's what real game programmers do. "

No. That's what a team does. A few art guys, a few programmers, a lead game designer, a few sound engineers etc.

I'm one person. And I'm a programmer. I programmed this from scratch from the ground up (4 times, which is why it took so long. This is the 4th rewrite from scratch with a lot of planning). I never claimed to have art skills.

So please understand what you're saying and what you're criticizing. I can appreciate constructive complaints, but at least read the forum thread I've posted, or the blog @ framerate.info/psp. And please understand that I will have original art when I release a game, but I wanted to show people what I had been doing to perhaps garner some support or maybe find some art people... Please at least try to appreciate the long unpaid hours developers like myself spend creating these things.... thanks

I understand that you coded the game, and I DO appreciate that. But speaking from a person who uses the product, it would be refreshing to see original art work and originality (I've seen too many homebrew games with sprites used from other games.) I'm trying to be constructive with the comments I make. I'm speaking only from screen shots because (not to sound harsh) this isn't worth the time to look into completely. So if you're already addressing all the things I commented, then more power to you.

"(4 times, which is why it took so long. This is the 4th rewrite from scratch with a lot of planning"

Yeah uh, QJ didn't put this in the blog, how could I know that. If this project turns out better than the screen shots I see now, then maybe I will look into it more, but (as I've said before) there are too many homebrew games that look poorly made and not appealing. But I understand where you're comming from. :)

by framerate - 2006-08-22 01:35
» hmm

Understood man. This is programmed in C with SDL, the utility library and engine library I've been writing are written so that it can be portable and used in other code if needed. The game code itself is coded with the future in mind and I was hoping users online could help shape the future by checking out this demo. But if you don't download it and just judge by the screenshots (which isn't even my art) then you're not really judging my work at all, so I guess I shouldn't be so frustrated...

by Lamtd - 2006-08-22 02:37
» I don't mind the "stolen" art

I don't mind the "stolen" art, as a programmer I do that all the time; when you work on a game engine the last thing you want is to waste time on graphics, especially when you suck at it. ;)

Otherwise I find it a bit misleading to mention "14 months of work", because if you only spent like 1 hour on it each week, then that would be equal to one or two weeks of intensive coding, which would be fair amount of time for a small program like that. But here people think you've spent 14 full months working on it, and obviously expect more than a two-screens map. ;)

But anyway, keep up the good work ! I'll be waiting for the next version !

» Shining (Force) + (Final) Fantasy

Does the name of that games consist of parts of "Shining Force" and "Final Fantasy" or is it just my imagination...?
