REDaLUA

Altair from our forums has updated REDaLUA, a Red Alert clone. And this game looks freakin awesome! There are a few pesky bugs, and some unfinished stuff, but once it gets all its bases covered, I'm sure it'll be something to look forward to.

The implemented features :
  • Every unit can be selected one by one or by using the selection drawbox.
  • All units can move seperately at the same time. Number doesn't matter.
  • Saving/Loading - Only one save game though. Might be buggy.
  • Shooting works, but could be better.
  • Menus implemented. Not all buttons work though.
  • Team selection works now - You can select as many units as you want and also put them in multiple teams. For now you can select 4 teams, the number will be increased later.
  • Mining also works now. When the truck is full it will return to the refinary. However not the other way around unfortunately.
  • Health, Repairing, Scrolling, Sound added.
  • The features list will get longer soon. And I'd urge you to try out this game. It's that good!
Here's a couple of screenshots of the game:

This game needs Lua Player. Grab it if you don't have it. Thanks to our "anonymous" reporter for the tip!

Good job retard, look at the source(oh wait you dont know how to read lua?) and see just how poor of a design went into this game. Its a mess of spaghetti code that barely works. You guys have to realize that lua isnt capable of running an efficient game engine that is flexible and modular. As well, its completely unfeasible, thats why no big game developers use lua to write games.

umdemulator 0.8c src is released... :)

by Johan - 2006-05-03 05:09
» to 25...

Why bother :) most people understand that an AI is not doable in LUA... heck most game devs can barly create a good AI on any platform.

However, efforts like this are still fun and something good might come out of it in the end.

» Wow!

THIS is why 1.5 PSP's are going for $200-$300 on Ebay . . .

This is the homebrew stuff of dreams . . .

Finally, a reason to break the dust off of my 1.5! Thanks!

» Cool

Man it's the first lua game worth playing for me. And it is not some kind rip like some has been released lately.

Good job and keep that work becouse youre the MAN.

Could it be in english? I haven't played it but according to the script it is in german.

by LOL - 2006-05-03 06:06
» CoderX and spanish inquisition are morons

@CoderX, of course this crappily coded lua kicks yours cause yours is so *****ty it's not worth mentioning. ESPECIALLY when you release every day so you can be on the front page when all you do is NOTHING but add on more "pic 1 move here" comands

@spanish inquisition, so this looks good, so what? no one said that lua can't display beautiful pictures. what i don't see is an ai, WHICH IS WHAT EVERYONE WHO SAID A GAME LIKE THIS CAN"T BE MADE SAID.

you morons suck, and are taking my air. be kind enough to stop breathing

props to this author as i'm a huge C&C fan, and that he didn't release this when it was in a pre-infant stage which is what CoderX and that 101skaterkid did just to get fame and attention cause they were abused as a child.

by CoderX - 2006-05-03 06:42
» Dr.Phill

I sence some anger

You bring up the issue of being abused as a child mostlikly be it is an experence your fimilar with

Would you like to talk about it

by skeptical - 2006-05-03 07:02
» I agree 100% with #30

This looks nice, but it is not a game until there is enemy AI.

I have better hopes for Starcraft 64, woot!

by MrMackey - 2006-05-03 07:16
» Who said this is Red Alert?

Its just a clone, and we all know how clone copy works. It will never be good as the original, but that doesnt mean it will suck, it just aint the original one.

M'kay

by Strangler - 2006-05-03 08:10
» re

how do you intend on implementing ai and missions? from scratch or from another source?

by the Backwards Man - 2006-05-03 08:57
» Major developers DO use LUA

#25 is wrong...LUA has been used by some major game developers such as Lucas Arts, who used LUA to make the great game Escape from Monkey Island ( I know, its old)

by XyZZy - 2006-05-03 09:23
» Think about

Realstically, we shouldn't even WANT AI on homebrew clones of RTS... it's pointless. RTS songle player can take quite some time, and are usually a sti down and play for a few hours kind of games, not a pick up and play. adhoc/infrastructure is where homebrew dev's should really focus on with RTS and such.

If we can have the custom Rules.ini working with this and wifi multiplayer, i'd be happy... this game is kind of old, missions ahve been played to DEATH (even the various fan made campaigns)

speaking of which, go to ra.afraid.org for things Red Alert

» FW 2.6

Does anyone know wich version of LUA works with an EU 2.60 PSP ??

i cant get lua to start with the GTA eloader!

by Altair - 2006-05-03 10:48
» Thx

Thx everyone!

I know it sometimes crashes at 30% unfortenately. Its because it loads alot of sounds and that takes alot of memory i think. So in order to make it run you have to run this as the first thing when you start LUA-player and not run another app before it. Atleast that way it works for me. I'll try and make the memory usage smaller.

AI is gonna be hard, but necessairy for it to be more fun. The other option is to make use of wifi multiplayer. That would make things easier as I only have to make sure to send the coordinates and stuff from one player to the other PSP and the otherway around.

Also i havent really cleaned up my code before releasing it. I will though, but it does make sence to me, haha. Ill comment aswell.

One last thing, right now its a Red Alert clone but it can be any clone. I mean the graphics are very easily altered. So that means if this will get finished, I (or maby someone else) will make graphics for Age of Empires or StarCraft or a totally different RTS. Ok now Im looking to far in the future.

Just seeing all these reactions makes me wanna keep on coding, so keep it coming!

Laterz

BTW Im Dutch, so I dont know where you read something German, because it cant be.

» koool but...

ok it works on 2.6 thats a +

-but then theres the every time i hit circle a building is made with no cost to me(and it is the same building every time)

-how i try to select a group of units and nothing happens

-very very hard to control with the cursor because it moves like 3 billion mph when i slightly tap it(i hope its not fast cause u made it that way)

+online is a good idea but some kind of screen should be put there cause it made the game crash when i went to look at it

other than that cool game and i wish u luck on creating an ai or online capability =)

by gangsta_psp - 2006-05-03 12:36
» not bad

Sure, im dissapointed that there is no AI in this game, but everything else seems pretty good. This is definently one of the best lua games ever. Most of the other lua games are just kiddie crap.

» indeed

ok whoever played rts in single player can go kill themselves or go play some rpg's or something because its all in the multiplayer. if he can just get the guy to walk to and shoot at an enemy until he dies or wins and then just sit there it would be frickin perfect. then it would be down to a person's intelegence to win like all rts players know.

#47, thats where just replacing all the images with slightyly different images comes in and calling it something else with a similar name like... Kommander & Konquer: Rad Lua or something ;)

by Annonymous Coward - 2006-05-03 17:53
» OMFG, Stop starting useless projects !

Get realistic guys...a such game coded in lua would involve much repetitive and annoying stuff to do, and most of it is ripping off the original sounds/gfx from the game... and that for what ? Getting a crap that gets about 2% of features of the full original game but *looks like it*... if you want something looking like that, just rip videos of you playing the game of ur dream, it would spare loads of time...

U all silly noob devs that are starting project like this one (I respect developpers, as I respect the Lua scripting language and what u can do with it, but I don-'t respect stupid people that start projects that won't ever get completed...

Look at some real clones projetcts... such as freeciv or openttd...

The goal of a clone is NOT just to redo the basic features, but it's also to add missing features and get limitations broken... (such as map size, etc...) However, none of these projects use ripped gfx... Some use the ORIGINAL gfx set (OpenTTD), and some use a completely redesigned gfx set... (freeciv, freecol, etc...)

Well, Lua Scripters, I know u got an easy language to learn, and would like to do a mountain of little crap u ever dreamt about, but PLEASE, Think of what u are starting to code, think about the project completion, not just at when it will makes think cowards it's done, or almost done... Animated ripped gfx is NOTHING but animation...and it's useless... they are enough interessting projects to start that could be usefull and easyer to complete... So think before releasing (and before starting ur project), stop polluting release sites with useless crap... everyone can rip gfx and animate them someway if they want..

Lua is a very usefull tool for somethings, i got nothing against it... I like some lua projects such as Triple Triad and some others... every project has its most adapetd language, but writing an rts clone and wanting it ful lfeatured is just like wanting a full 3d game (such an fps) on a webpage :)

But if the only thing we see in lua these times are lame clowns (not clones, too pathetic to be named like that), it's useless...

Well, Who wants to bet that we will never get more that 20-25% of the original game's features in that kind of lame "clown" project? :)

» Classes/better structured code?

btw you might wanna start using something like this

http://lua-users.org/wiki/SimpleLuaClasses

thats probably what I would do, I'm not sure if theres const support in lua but it'd probably help you alot, it looks like its hell to change any one of those button coordinates, or to tell what they are.

#50 is obviously illiterate, and he can't spell anonymous right either. I wouldn't bother listening to him.

looks great...love the original game, but it looks like im going to wait longer until a better version is released. Also, i would love to see the AOM be released too. Looks like we are getting some quality homebrew now.

Keep up the good work guys!!

by Altair - 2006-05-04 01:47
» ok

@#50 Maybe you're right. I am a noob dev and maybe i shouldn't have released it before it was anywhere near finished. I actually started on this as a fun thing and not expecting anything out of it.

I just really want a RTS on my PSP and ill try and make one. Im sure someone else could make a better RTS but nobody is making one, so instead of asking other people to make it for me Im trying to do it myself.

#47 Hmm I did think of that, but not really (doesn't makes sence, does it). I did rip the sprites (and adjusted them) and the sounds. Ill just have to make my own i guess.
