Electris' Studio Kagato has released another game for the NeoFlash Summer Coding Competition: Breakout-inspired Reactor v1.0.

In this game, players control a shield running along the reactor's wall and bounce a proton ball to hit and eliminate nasty little particles lurking inside for points.  Chain hits together in a single pass for bonus points. Eliminate all particles, move up one level. Every time you move up a level, the game throws in more particles, more speed, and more mayhem. Don't let the proton hit the reactor wall or you'll lose energy! Lose all your energy, and... BOOM!

Gameplay shot of Reactor v1.0

Control for this game's slightly different from the classic Breakout formula but is very simple, very easy to get into and get the hang of. Use the analog stick to position your deflector: you want it at the twelve-o'clock position, push the stick up; if you want it at the seven-o'clock position, push the stick in the appropriate direction. Press X to launch your proton at the start of each level; Select to quit your game.

Scoring (from Readme.txt):
  • Base value for eliminating a particle is 10 points.
  • If the Proton hits the Shield or wall without hitting a particle first, the value is reduced by 1 point (to a minimum of 5 points).
  • Hit multiple particles with one shot for a chain reaction. Successive particles in a chain reaction multiplies the value. (eg. 3 hit chain: 10 points -> 20 points -> 30 points = 60 point total)
  • At the end of each level gain 10 points per unit of energy remaining (full energy is worth 100 points)
Reactor v1.0 will run on firmwares 1.5 and 2.0-2.6. You'll need LuaPlayer and eLoader on your PSPs as well. Just drop the game folder into the PSP/GAME/luaplayer/Applications directory on your PSP, and you're good to go.

» Looks interesting

Looks more innovative and creative than most homebrew, especially for LUA. But I don't feel like downloading LUA player. If I ever feel like downloading it, I'll have to try this.

» I'll release as eboot eventually

Once I've got time to install the toolchain and successfully compile, I'll have eboot versions of all my Lua games. I didn't have time to do this before the comp.

If you get errors from Lua when you run it, try v1.1 (available from the Neoflash link above). The gameplay is identical, but the truetype font for scores is replaced with the standard Lua text output. Not quite as pretty but should work on all versions, I hope...

» re: familiar

Really? I thought I had a fairly original game here (aside from its obvious Breakout roots) :)

I don't suppose you can remember the name of the game, or the phone, can you? I'm curious...

i dont think this particular idea has been used before kagato you are really good at ideas for games but in another version could you include power ups like in breakout but really goodi really like this much like how i liked electris good work hope other lua devs can make games as good as yours

» Later versions

I've got enhanced versions of both Electris and Reactor in mind. I'll go back to working on my comic for a little while first, but there will be additional game modes for both games in the next releases. Stay tuned...

» hm

it wont let me play. i get to the menu where it says press start, but when i press start, it goes back to the lua player menu (start does that for all my lua apps). none of the other buttons seem to start the game either.

» If not

If it's not working : open script.lua with note pad and replace at the end of the script the four "font:Print(font ," by "screen:print".

Awesome game. Never seen before, this game was never on a phone, the screen make it look like another game, that's why remagatsuj thought it was on his phone.

This game looks like fun! I hope you do release this and other fun games in eboot form. I have a 2.60 PSP and would love to play this. Any chance of a clone or a game similar to Blockbreaker? I love games like this. Very addicting.

Anyhow good work and keep it up. Thanks

Maxime, will those directions get it working for me or are they for a different problem?

» >> kagato

its on my 7210 phone.i forgot the name but its built in there.

» i remember now!!!

the game is triple pop.

by Kagato - 2006-08-21 10:25
» Well I'll be damned

I'd never seen Triple Pop before, but the resemblance is undeniable :)

It looks more like a "Puzzle Bobble / Bust-a-Move" style game than "Breakout". That is, however, one of the other game modes I'm considering for the next release...

» Compatibility update - Reactor v1.2

If you had problems under LuaPlayer 0.20, try the updated version on the Neoflash site (the "via" link above).
