Homebrew developer wololo has released a new update for Wagic, the card playing game for the PSP based on Magic the Gathering. This new release packs a lot of stuff and functionality making this new release a must have. The new update ships with a new card called Clone and adds Momir Basic mode that allows you to play against the AI to name a few.

Here's the full changelog:

  • New card: Clone! (thanks gdspsp!)
  • New game mode: Momir Basic! Play against the AI with more than 800 creatures in a mix of random fun and strategy! I%u2019ll explain later on this blog (http://wololo.net/wagic) how to unlock this extra mode
  • More than 300 new cards, including cards from the sets Mercadian Masques, Mirrodin, Odyssey, but also in other sets (10th edition, Revised, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Shards of Alara, Conflux, Ice Age, Invasion, Lorwyn, Mirage, Portal, Tempest%u2026). Wagic now allows you to play with more than 1600 cards! (many thanks Dr.Solomat and leungclj!)
  • Improved memory usage for card textures (For those interested, JGE now allows you to load jpeg files in 5551 while being in 8888 memory mode)
  • New %u201Ccache size%u201D option. Slim owners might want to try to push it up to 60, while Phat owners probably need to stay below 20. Increasing the cache size while improve game speed if you play with card pictures, but might increase the risks of crashes. Try to find the value that best suits your needs.
  • Improved stability. The game has been reported to crash less than version 0.5.1
  • New parser keywords: mustattack, cantattack, cantblock, may, copy. I will update the %u201Ccreate your own cards%u201D page soon.
  • New alternate deck format (card names rather than their id), should make it easier to create your own decks (for yourself or the AI) with a text editor.
  • The test suite now allows card names rather than their id, makes it easier to write tests.
  • Small shop improvements, to make it easier to buy cards and boosters
  • Victory is becoming more exciting than before, as you get bonus credits depending on how well you beat your opponent.
  • 5 new AI decks (thanks Abrasax)
  • Bug fixes for the following cards: Arcanis the omnipotent, Elvish Piper, Fastbond, Fountain of youth, Nevinyrral%u2019s Disk,Spirit Link, %u2026
  • Other bug fixes related to the following: lifelink, more than 100 cards in deck, more than 64 abilities in play, nightmare with 0/0 that doesn%u2019t go to graveyard when it comes into play, selling cards in deck editor%u2026

Cards from the Magic series are still here?

I thought they threatened to sue for copyright infringement so he removed all the cards? If all the cards are there that's cool as long as he doesn't get in trouble.

hmm....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Wagic is you and the AI only right? There has never been an ad hoc version where two different PSPs can play Wagic against each other right?

Great concept

Yes QJ.net tells there were cease+desist order: http://pspupdates.qj.net/Wagic-The-Homebrew-v0-4-1-back-from-ceasing-and-desisting/pg/49/aid/128813. If I am right, he just removed all thumbnails, which were copyrighted. But I assume the cards are real. I don't know where he gets the pictures then. I should really start trying this better someday. Haven't played MTG for a while.

link

So the download is actually a link? Is that a common thing to do around here? Thank, and sorry if I sound stupid!

Yes it's common, and..

Yes, you do.

cards are here, pictures are not

What WotC lawyers asked me to remove was the copyrighted content, i.e. the pictures. The cards are still here, and the game is fully playable, but if you want a "nice" version you have to get the pictures by yourself and put them in the correct directories. So batanen's explanation is the correct one. To get the pictures, I suggest Magic's official website (magic gatherer)

adhoc

I promised I'd be working on adhoc when I can run homebrews on two PSP, either if the PSP3000 allows me to play Wagic, or if I get enough donations to buy a hackable psp2000. That was a while ago...

awesome

One of the best homebrews around and only gets better with each release.
