PSP homebrew developer Jamie Fuller just dropped by the QJ.Net Forums earlier to announce the release of his latest project, Mayhem in Monsterland. This homebrew game is a sidescrolling platformer that takes players through the world of Monsterland, clearing enemy monsters along the way. Depending on the stage's mood (happy or sad), players will have to collect enough bombs or stars to open up the exit so they can move on to the next stage.

That's the summary of the game mechanics - more details should be available in the accompanying file readme. On a more personal note, playing through the game got me remembering classic platformers like Mario and Sonic, although Mayhem in Monsterland definitely carries its own charm. Try it out for yourself, via the download link available here. Also try to visit Jamie Fuller's release thread at the QJ.Net Forums while you're visiting, or his other previous projects.

» an old Commodore 64 title..

Although not mentioned in your article, this is based on an old C64 title:

was quite a good game for its time, and stretched the C64 hardware to its limits.

» Maybe it's just coincidence...

But, I feel there'll be a resurgence in homebrew development now that seemingly every PSP can be downgraded and/or upgraded to custom (OE) firmware. This could create renewed interest in the PSP in the way that Dreamcast or the GP2X has a strong emu/homebrew scene.

More ace programmers like Jamie (or even some hackers that port stuff over from the Linux gaming/emu scene) would support us if they felt the audience was much bigger. I mean, the DS homebrew scene is big and you have to buy flash cards to run homebrew (IIRC).

» C64

spathi is right. This game rocked on the c64. Dissapointing QJ and Jamie Fuller didn't credit this as a c64 game.

Go the c64!!!!

» yeah but

You really wouldnt call the psp homebrew scene big? I guess its died off a bit now but its definently seen a good deal of homebrew.

» A classic game

Absolutely adored it as a kid, and like to crank it out every so often now - glad a remake has come along, just hope it lives up to its hype!
