Lua RTS Prototype

For a coder who used Lua for the first time, this isn't shabby at all. Developer yaustar admits that he only came up with this Lua RTS prototype to distract himself from his main project (no word on that yet, but we'll keep you posted if ever there are updates).

He says he was also trying to learn Lua for future projects, and he was also trying to see if the LuaPlayer can handle an RTS (Real Time Strategy) system on its own. At the time of this prototype's release, the developer's managed to try the game only on LuaPlayer in Windows and not on the PSP. But those who've tried it on the PSP say it's awesome.

Only the basic scrolling and radar work in this program at the moment, but since a lot of the framework is there the new features will be easy to add. The graphics were taken from CS Strategized and the menu graphic was from Starcraft Lua RTS. The codes used are the developer's own.

pure crap

» pointless a bit much?

what in the world is the point of this? all it is is one building in the center of the map surrounded by nothing at all with a cursor that goes off of the screenand moves it around. i mean it is an amazingly large step up from the starcraft and command and conquer proof of concepts but its still sorta pointless to post something like this. its almost like this was done just to get a little attention.

» yay

yay we may soon get to play an rts game on the psp soon WOOt maybe even starcraft?

I'm tired of having to look through 8 or 9 of these just to find something worthwhile to download. Please yaustar, keep working on this but don't post something unless you've got something people will actually care to download.

» Stuff like this is useful

It's useful to the developers to see if there is interest in continuing the project. If everyone shoots it down as a bad idea in the early stages, then it could save them a lot of time, wouldn't it?

Also, it is useful for those that are interested in things that may be "coming soon." Think of it like a movie trailer... This is not simply a file repository for all the freeloaders to leech off of. When developers have something they care to share with other users, this is the venue for such information. If you don't like it, don't read it. Simple as that. Now, quit your whining about not getting something for nothing every second of the day.

My only negative feedback here is in regard to copyrights. The devs of this particular piece of software should be aware that there's a decent chance of getting some sort of cease and desist letter from Blizzard Entertainment's lawyers for using bits and pieces ripped from their software. If they're not concerned about the potential legal ramifications, then I say, more power to ya. Just don't be surprised is all I'm saying.

@ 1.

Wow your comment is so constructive ... geez

» ugh

look all i am saying is this kind of thing should not be posted on the front of pspu because it really is nothing at all. this is something that should have been posted on pspprogramming.com on the forums there instead of putting it here because its for people who code and stuff to use and possibly help code. and no i am not whining. and if i were a coder i would not waste my time trying to show people what i made in 5 minutes; i would code my whole game, app, etc and compile it and release it as a beta with most of its features instead of putting out something that would be a waste of time to load up especially on a 2.0+ psp that you have to wait for gta to load up.

so just a tip for anyone who codes: dont post crap on pspupdates for attention. go on pspprogramming.com and get a couple people to beta test its not that hard. releasing stuff that isnt playable is pointless and a big waste of time.

p.s. i understand that it is good to show people things to see if they like it but its better to have people on a programming site test it as it progresses and if the testers say it sucks then it can be killed then and pspprogramming is a good place to do that because it is for developers and stuff. and just an fyi im not saying he should stop making this app/game or whatever it is i am just saying he shouldnt post if it isnt done enough for people to get a good idea of what it would be like.

» wow

wow..another "proof of concept" that you can move a curser over a few images. That was done 50 years ago. This is not news, just another attention seeker looking for notoriety.

Anyone who see's this for anything other than what it is, is a fool.

by crowbar - 2006-06-11 20:03
» Oh gods..

Please tell me this isn't the same crap as those "proof of concept" things for Red Alert/Starcraft as they neither proved the concept nor showed any promise of ever becoming a game.

Is this still a load of images that are just that, images that can be pushed around the screen?

Or is it an actual ENGINE?

"The graphics were taken from CS Strategized"

Wasn't that the USA Command Center from C&C Generals?

All you leeches can do is piss and moan that this isn't a fully playable RTS. I, for one, am relieved to finally see a developer work on an RTS.

I don't care if it takes 2 years... do you see C&C coming to UMD any time soon? Probably not... just give the dev some support and encourage further progress on the project, ok? Jesus... or keep your 13 year old mouths shut, does that work for you all?

I'm excited by the screenshot alone... so leave it be, unless you feel you have constructive comments. If I were the developer, I wouldn't bother reporting future progress on this site - all you kids need to start developing games yourself or STFU. This is good news, not another "yay we can scroll around and look at something then ***** at the developer for not entertaining us all" piece of news.

lol... grow up kids. Developer: good job man, keep it up. ;)

Looks pretty funky yaustar, keep it up and ignore anyone moaning about quality, homebrew is a hobby after all, not a profession :)

» regarding starcraft on the psp.

if they could make the graphics engine for starcraft and make it able to read replay files, it would make a handy starcraft replay viewer, because i don't think that a playable starcraft is possible on the psp. but replay functionality would be nice indeed

by Umm - 2006-06-12 09:47

What happened to that starcraft someone was making for the psp I saw it like 2 months ago and seen no news since...

by Psilocybeing - 2006-06-12 10:14
» .

A Starcraft-style game is entirely possible on the PSP, maybe even more so than back in the day of the 166 thanks to the system being completely dedicated to our task, and is not forced through many possibly slow APIs and layers. The only limitation would be the available RAM space, but dynamic loading for levels etc, loading the bare minimum and using small sprites would solve that problem.

by eggwonder - 2006-06-12 10:22
» ...

first off im not 13 nor am i a kid by any means.

second i never said i wanted the guy to stop making his game, because i would love to see an rts as much as anyone else. the problem is that it is pointless to post things like this before they are done because during the time it takes to finish the game the real game companies will have cease and desist orders and it will never be finished. so posting something like this in its premature stages is bad for anyone makeing a game using graphics, code,n ames, etc from a real game.

third who in the hell are you "hater" to tell anyone to shut up when you were the first post or at least used the same name as the first poster and said it was "crap"

» Of flipping heck

hey hey hey. I didn't post it as news or/and on qjnet. It was released 'as is' with source (which used OO design) to other developers to look at in a Developers forum. I can't help it if someone else thought it was news worthy to post here.

It may not look impressive but the underlying code is a huge stop up in terms of design compared to other startup RTS Lua 'games' hence the word PROTOTYPE.
