Homebrew game: 4^2 (Four-square) |
Ó
Developer coolguy5678, also the creator of the Unofficial CSPSP Editor, visited the QJ.NET Forums earlier to announce the release of 4². As its name implies, this homebrew is a PSP port of the popular Four Square ball game some of you may remember playing.
There are four players to this game, with each getting assigned a square. Your objective to hit a ball so that it bounces once in your square before going into the square of another player. If you make a mistake, you're out, and the player from a lower square than you moves up to take your place. A new player then takes the bottom-ranking square.
The highest ranking square is the king square, which is located on the top left of the screen. You'll be playing as a blue player, and you'll actually earn double points if you managed to fight your way to the top two squares.
The ball will travel in the direction your player's cone is pointed. Timing your charge is important, as releasing X while the ball is too close to your sprite will cause it to travel much slower. As for 4^2's controls:
- Use the analog/or d-pad to move.
- Hold X to charge up your shot.
- Release X when the ball is near you to hit it.
Further details on 4^2's controls and rules are available in the file bundle's readme. You may also want to visit coolguy5678's release thread at the QJ.NET PSP Development Forum if you're interested in posting your feedback.

The game uses indirect rules i.e. you first have to hit it onto your own square.
"Timing your charge is important, as releasing X while the ball is still far from your sprite will cause it to travel much slower."
Actually, it's the other way round - it goes faster when it's further from your sprite.
you forgot to mention in the article that this Homebrew takes part in the Scenery Beta 2008. Ive seen that you have created a tag for the Showcase (http://www.qj.net/tags/Scenery-Beta/15598), so Im sure that you want to know which Homebrews are presented to this competition.
By the way, GREAT Homebrew coolguy5678. Im spanish, and I had never played 4^2. I like very much this game. I think that you did a great work, thanks a lot coder :-). This is another Homebrew that wont leave my Memory Stick.
I've corrected the error in the rules. Thanks for letting us know. Btw, Good hunting with regards to the showcase! :)
We've included a tag for Scenery Beta, and a link to our initial announcement for the event. Thanks for letting us know :)
We're looking forward to seeing what sort of entries will be popping up in the weeks to come.
