Frontier 1337 was created by Atien - Image 1

We don't know if you still remember, but homebrew coder Atien ported the Commodore Amiga video game title Frontier Elite II to the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The homebrew game became known as Frontier 1337, and just like we said, it has almost been a year since the last update.

Frontier Elite II is actually a sequel to 1980s classic Frontier. In its core, the franchise is basically a space trading game with combat and role-playing scenarios. To put it in today's terms, it belongs to the sandbox genre of video games. You can be a trader, a bounty hunter, or even a member of the navy. The game only ends when you want it to.

In case you want to know, Atien used Tom Morton's source code of his GLFrontier PC port in creating Frontier 1337. Anyway, judging from the changelog below, we could say that the game has really come a long way after its hiatus. Take a look:
  • The game is now running at 333MHz.
  • The music has been enabled.
  • All WAV sounds and OGG music have been re-sampled to 44100Hz and are now working perfectly.
  • All sub-folders (but savs) have been moved to data folder.
  • The Fkeys highlighter has been turned from red to black for not interfering with the intro and outro of the game.
Take note that the download below contains the game itself plus the music and SFX packs. It also has an extensive Readme file for installation instruction on FW 1.5 and custom firmwares OE.

I'm on 3.40 OE-A as well. It shows a black screen for a second and returns to the app view of irshell.

» all i can say is

save ur time and avoid this, even if it does work. it's just another homebrew game that will never be finished and SUCKS anyway.

give up on homebrew games, unless they are puzzle or shooters. i can't think of any other successful homebrew. just do emulators or aplications but forget the gaming zone, cuz everything SUCKS!!

Oh, that's just rich. Just because your not smart enough to make a good homebrew game, doesn't mean others aren't. This game is pretty damn good. And you sir, are a jackass.

by to Highsight, yeah the big puuussssy guy - 2007-05-05 11:23
» DUDE U SUCK

listen retarded retard: so you rather play that piece of TOTAL BULLSH-IT than playing KICKARSE games like Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, PLAYSTATION GAMES like Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross. Games from SNES like Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, GB, GBA, GBC, hell Custer's Revenge from Atari 2006 is BETTER.

seriously, the bubble gum under my desk > this homebrew

by Evil Cow - 2007-05-05 11:25

highsight i think he's right u kno, homebrew games community is pretty much lackluster, plain and...let's face it, homebrew isn't meant for that.

I disagree with the way he replied tho, no need to be an ass*****.

» great!

This looks great!

I only wish someone would make a modern Elite-like or Star Control-like game! Preferably for a console...

Too many shooters and FPS fans though... I'm not saying they're all bad games.... I like a few myself.... but there just aren't many space games... especially with exploration elements.

» Responce

To Nameless Dumbass: Sure, everyone loves those games, hell, so do I. I am just saying that if developers are so nearsighted as to not even attempt to make an original game with homebrew, then we could miss out on some seriously awesome games. NoGravity for example, that game is amazing.

Evil Cow: You appear to be someone with an IQ higher than a walnut like that idiot, which is good. Yes, I agree, the current state of PSP homebrew is pretty plain, however, it will not get any better with idiots like that other guy insulting the good people that work hard to make games like this. ;)

by comedy - 2007-05-05 13:13
» i'm sorry but you guys are missing the point

this guy is not trying to make his own game, he's taking one of the greatest games of yesteryear and making it playable on the psp... this is just as noble a task as creating something from scratch.

don't dis someone's hard work, all the homebrew creators want to do is make something for everyone to enjoy and you sit there and badmouth it... why aren't you creating a good homebrew game? is it because you can't be bothered, can't find the time or don't know how? well, whatever reason i don't think you have the right to put down someone else who is making time and using hard earned skills for everyone's benefit.

it's clear most of you havne't even played this game, have you no respect for the roots of videogames? this is where it all began, and elite is one of the best games of all time.

don't you realise that the psp is one of the only consoles for which people can create games and give to others to play? you'd shoot down every aspiring game creator because you don't think their work is good enough?

i hate you.

» highsight

pretty rich for someone to start complaining about homebrew when he is probably using it day in and day out to run his games on OE.

basically what highsight is saying is 'homebrew devel's, stop wasting time on making things that interest you, and get back to making things that interest me'. the most arrogant thing you could possibly say and exactly why many people dont contribute what they make. because it starts to be expected from arrogant leechers who just take everything thats available and then have the nerve to start talking ***** to the people that they depend upon.

» f*cks sake

I wish people would type normally on the interent. 1337 is not a woed. If you think it is then your a f*cking geek

by Highsight - 2007-05-05 15:45
» Um...

Actually no... I am saying the exact opposite. o_O I don't think you followed the conversation correctly...

by slaanesh - 2007-05-05 19:58
» Cannot get this to work

I cannot launch this either.

I'm running 3.40 OE

I have no plug-ins or anything activated, it's just vanilla.

I've tried launching from /psp/game150/FRONTIER

I've tried with no DATA dir and with just an empty DATA dir.

It always just reboots back to the start.

It's a pity as I loved Frontier for the Amiga - probably my favourite Amiga game! Can you fix this?

by Mr.Modem - 2007-05-05 20:47
» Shut up!

It's just sad how people don't seem to understand how awesome this game is. Just like comedy already stated: This isn't the usual crappy photoshop-whorish-I-made-this-in-5-minutes-homebrew game that you see everyday. This is a port of Frontier Elite (which is the sequel to Elite), one of the greatest games ever. You should really read up on your video game history before you complain on a game you're probably to stupid to understand anyway.

by Kirby - 2007-05-05 21:20
» @"well"

Technically, it's not a homebrew game. It's an engine port. GG brainiac.

by Bill - 2007-05-05 22:29
» Poor cliffy :(

Type normally on the INTERENT?

1337 is not a WOED?!? You surely mean "number" :)

I think that author of this article mixed some things.

"Frontier Elite II is actually a sequel to 1980s classic Frontier."

It's not Frontier Elite II, it's Elite II: Frontier, and it's not sequel to Frontier, but it's sequel to Elite, game originally written for BBC Micro platform.

by Jazz - 2007-05-06 19:10
» Working version

As others have said, the working version is at the coder's website http://atien.free.fr/jeux/1337 - the initial release of this version (as seen on PSP Updates) was missing a file. You can grab it at DCEMU as well.

To the *****ers... Dear God, it's no wonder the PSP homebrew scene's not too hot right now with so much whining and flaming.

This is a remarkable port of a genuinely classic computer game from 1993 (which is now shareware, incidentally), and frankly we're damn lucky to be able to have this wonderful game in a pocket-sized format. I take my hat off to Atien, and if you're going to be the nameless flaming idiot from earlier... well, dude, you're part of the problem, so go back to your bootleg FF7 and leave the rest of us alone.

by Jazz - 2007-05-06 19:18
» ...

Not to be too pedantic, but it was/is Frontier: Elite II (title and subtitle transposed), but you're right, it is indeed the sequel to Elite. Shame on you guys at PSP Updates! ;)

Then, of course, the third game was Frontier: First Encounters. Who knows if we'll ever see Elite 4...
