Doom for the PSP version 1.4, by Chilly Willy - Image 1Thanks to tip sent in by reader CJ (kudos!) we're happy to report that Chilly Willy has updated Doom for the PSP to version 1.4.

This homebrew, in case you're a first-time reader, is a PSP Slim port of ADoomPPC, which was in turn a port of ADoom, ported from ID Software's Linux version of the Doom FPS. This latest build packs a couple of new tweaks (quoting the readme):

Automatically switches on LCD after using TV. No need to tap the display button anymore. Now uses intraFonts from Ben Hur as long as the ltn8.pgf font can be loaded. Looks a LOT better. If it fails to load the font for some reason (you deleted it to make room in the flash or something), it falls back to the debug printing. Altered next/previous weapon handling so that you can switch between the shotgun and the double-barrel shotgun in versions that allow it. The file requester now sorts the entries.

We remind users that Doom for the PSP is built for Slims running on custom firmware 3.xx, although it will also run for Phat units. Be sure to study the readme before jumping into the fray with your buddies on the other gaming platforms.

# Networking doesn't work!Deerwings 2007-11-14 10:49
I'm using a PSP Phat with firmware 3.52 M33-4, and the networking does not work. If you try to connect to an access point, it gives an error and you can't select access points either. It's like it's not communicating with the network modules on the Phat at all. The wireless is set up, as I can browse, test the PSP's connection to the internet, and all other network connectivity functions work fine in other connected applications, but 1.4 does not communicate. 1.3 would, but I couldn't get it to connect to a game I had running on my PC.

# Network sort of workingDeerwings 2007-11-14 11:19
I just deleted my network settings and tried again, now I can connect to the Access point, but I guess the version of Doom I'm using (Zdoom with the Collector's Edition wads) doesn't work, nor does the networking with it. Close, though!

QJ says everyone loves this. Who? There's no comments other than complaints. I'm not saying that it's a terrible programming job. That takes a lot of work. I'm saying, why the ***** are people still trying to port Doom to every device possible? Doom was still cool about 10 years ago. Doom 2 was too. Final Doom was stupid. Doom 3 is nothing but Doom on graphical steroids. Every doom game is redundant. Now every redundant Doom game is on every redundant device. ***** you Id.

I've never had an account and I made just to respond to you. I can not disagree with you more. There is a reason that this post has gotten as many jumps as it has, and that is becasue doom is one of the most amazing games of all time. It brought first person shooters into the homes of every red-blooded american. It's innovative game design lent itself to all sorts of user designed modifications. It spawned some of the first homebrew scenes in the video gaming comunity. I am going to guess that you are some dumb little kid who doesn't know what you are talking about, because ignorance is the only defense you can have for bashing one of the best games ever made. This is one of the only decent first person shooters on the PSP and I'm proud that it was made with homebrew. It plays and looks even better than it did back in its hay day on my old computer with Windows 95. The only other decent FPS on PSP is Quake another ID title. Both games operate lighting fast and are so smooth. I suggest you get educated and put in some serious time with this masterpiece. Know your roots!

doom wasn't all that great in retrospect but fragging ur friends with a piece of homebrew is awesome. They took a project and stuck with it. Now its one of the funnest homebrew games in the scene. ID may not be the most forward thinking in terms of developers, but it was the chance they took pushing the FPS genre while it was in its infant stages that saturated the pc market and consoles leading to unreal, farcry, halo, half life, and it seems every next gen game there is coming out almost. If its worth it to emulate SMS and NES then its worth it to emulate Doom.
