3D Mario Demo - Image 1 3D Mario Demo - Image 2

Here's something to prove that the PSP is fully capable of running homebrew 3D games - thanks to SANiK who has just released his Mario demo for the PSP. As the title suggests, this is not a full title and therefore is quite short. But this demo shows that by using C, you can create a 3D environment just like this one and hopefully will encourage more developers to move away from 2D games and into the world of 3D. Here's what SANiK said about this release:

This demo is never going to become a full game. It lags at certain points but could be sped up 90%. My little Mario Demo is just a taste of what could be done if one actually tries (with just 6 days to code it + 1 day to port it to the PSP)

This isn't within everyone's ability, and of course depending on the homebrew game, 2D could be the better of the two. However this demo illustrates that 3D homebrew game is not impossible (take AnonymousTipsters' ThrottleX as evidence for that!) and therefore SANiK is giving developers the chance to finish this game; which apparently can be achieved by starting from scratch using poly.c and math.c.

Developers, download the source code; homebrew gamers, download the demo. Check out the potential of the PSP!

Pretty cool, if only the original ROM was modified or something though. TBH as previously said; this is just a fish eye type view.

# Second levelGuest 2007-02-11 15:18
to go into the second level rename 1-2, 1-1 and you should spawn in it, though the second one is even more unfinished than the first.

I really like it. I'll probably NEVER play SMB1 again, unless Sanik wants to make more levels for this version! lol really trippy. Nice break from all the crappy games i've been trying at random...

# WrongKichigai 2007-02-11 15:59
It's NOT just a fish-eye lens applied to the original game, it's obviously a 3D build using the original levels of SMB as a template. Just look at the bricks. Look carefully, and you'll notice that they have additional faces (IE: they look like cubes, not just squares). There's quite a difference.

Care to explain why there are cubes on the screen then?

# hexGuest 2007-02-11 16:07
if you hex edit the maps they make wierd blocks appear and stuff, i think 00=nothing, 01=regular block, and 02= power up block

The idea of this demo is to demonstrate (wow, never would have thought of that) we CAN make 3D homebrew. Mario is simple, Loco Roco is complex. All the developer needed to do was prove it's possible, not remake an entire super-complex game.

that be sweet if someone took the time to create the entire game. :-)

I could see it now.

Your sitting on the couch playing Mario on your PSP and your pot smoking friend comes in and not realizing the version your playing begins going into an 80's acid flashback and thinks that his mind is melting.

Yeah I could see that.

# Way to go SANiK!DrNicket 2007-02-11 17:34
This truly is a revolutionary concept

I challenge anyone to match this, let alone top it.

If I could code half as well as the dedicated programmers that give us such a wonderful homebrew scene, I'd chip in myself.

# Not a portDrNicket 2007-02-11 17:48
Though conceptually similar it is coded from the ground up. If was a port, it would have been more complete.

Kudos SANiK.

Please keep up the great work on this. Please enabled the mushrooms so I can reach the 3D MINUS WORLD :P

Seriously though, It's very cool looking. One of the best homebrew examples in a long while. I want 3D Goombas!

Also, if you swap the level names around you can play both levels.

# 3D Programming...Ryalla 2007-02-12 13:55
We've been able to program in 3D for a very long time.. Most people either don't have the skill or just don't feel like using it. WittyNameHere (a.k.a. Insomniac), for example, is using 3D in a game he's currently coding called Urble. We've had the means for a long time now.

Well, actually the game is actually still played in 2d, even though he has made the envirnment consist of cubes, so this is not actually "3d". It has 3d objects, but the game itself has to be 3d, which it is not. This is a stupid way to prove 3d, remember throttle X and the ps1 emu? those are ways to prove the PSP can handle 3d homebrew, not a 2 dimentional demo with 3 dimentional images in it.

By your logic there arent any 3d games.

The 2d screen is just creating the illusion of 3d.

So by your logic all games are 2d
