StrmnNrmn's Daedalus R13 released: savestates, +20% speed up

Daedalus R13 N64 emulator - Image 1Keeping his promise yesterday, StrmnNrmn has finally released his Deadalus R13 Nintendo 64 homebrew emulator for the PSP. R13's biggest feature, as StrmnNrmn's previously discussed, are the savestate features - right now, it works pretty much like QuickSaves in various PC games.

As StrmnNrmn elaborates:

You can now save your progress at any point, via the Pause Menu (accessed through hitting the Select button). Savestates are written out to the memory stick, and consume around a megabyte per slot. You can load up a savestate at any time from the Pause Menu, or via the front end (hit the right shoulder button to swap from the rom list to the savestate list.)

Other than savestates, the most significant change in R13 is a number of optimisations to the dynarec core which should give a 10-20% speedup depending on the title being played. I've tested these optimisations as much as I can, but if you find that roms which worked with R12 are now broken, try disabling 'dynamic recompilation' and/or 'dynarec stack optimisation' from the rom's preferences screen.

Some of you (like G$718 in the comments section) may have bet two Star Ocean PSP Slims with 3.72 M33 and a 1.50 kernel that it wouldn't come out today, but guess all bets are off now! StrmnNrmn is the man!

StrmnNrmn is asking for feedback, especially if some ROMs aren't working anymore on R13. Looking on the bright side, StrmnNrmn is now hoping that he could keep his momentum going and release "small, more frequent updates." Other relevant notes are available in the readme files included in the download links below.

the bet

ROFL. iamback(unregistered), from what I remember yesterday, you agreed on G$718's bet in Yu-gi-oh terms. so i guess it's quits with G$718, ya? Hehehee! ^_^V
by PSP_Trekster - 2007-11-04 14:51:52
Slow

someone said Hydro Thunder runs great? I can load and play it, no sound and it runs really slow for me, even with Frameskip of 8 its slow and choppy. Is there any game that runs close to normal speed with sound yet? Mario 64 runs nice without sound Yoshi Story I can hear the NINTENDO sound at first but nothing else/ Running M33 3.71 PSP Original

lol

on the second line Daedalus is spelled Deadalus the "ea" are mixed up
by Jimihendrix - 2007-11-04 16:29:11
it is 333mhz

it already is 333mhz in his blog comments he posted this StrmnNrmn said... @crazedover: That's definitely a possibility, but like you say, not until the emulator is running much faster. @roelandb: I'll definitely be picking up a slimline PSP when they're release. I'm guessing it's going to be a while before we'll be able to run homebrew on it though! @jody/ring-ding: Daedalus has run at 333MHz since the very first release. Wed Aug 01, 08:46:00 PM BST

Well, to be fair, that address isn't mine anyway. Should he actually send it to that address, let's just say the secret service is gonna track him down for a suspicious bomb threat or something. :P

Yes, I know. My demand for you to pay up was as much in jest as was your original bet :P I just like playing around with people. I mean, forums aren't always for flaming people. Sometimes it's ok to just joke around facetiously. Haha... starchips :P

by bckrupps - 2007-11-04 19:02:34
load times and speed

I downloaded it and put it on my psp. While the game loaded I went grocery shopping and watched the Patriots game. I just checked on it and it's almost loaded and ready to go. People complain that new games are too short. Heck at 6fps you get 17 hours of gameplay per level.
by Binary - 2007-11-04 19:49:10
wow?

sounds like to me 0% I not really happy with it still. yay... for save states.
by Strongbadunit2 - 2007-11-04 20:03:47
wtf

what are you talking about Daedalus is a N64 Emulator...the games aren't "new" and dont take too long to download O and if you mean i.sos then please dont reply

Not impressed.

Sorry, but while I AM seeing a minor improvment, its still coming along incredibly slowly. StrmnNrmn needs to start corroborating with other coders.. this has officially taken FAR too long with minimal improvemnts along the way.. Sorry to be so critical, but its going on year 3 here and its still not fullspeed? I DO however see a lot of potential for it to be the best emulator ever good work so far (I guess)
by jrome - 2007-11-04 20:43:36
nice

nice job!. sucks that perfect dark doesnt work though.
by Churro - 2007-11-04 20:53:41
wow

My late b-day gift just arrived!!!! lmao I don't care how late it was, in fact, I liked the fact that he took his time, making this update way better than any others =)
by Exophase - 2007-11-04 23:17:26
Post again when you know something about what it means to emulate N64 on PSP

Daedalus is the most heavily optimized emulator for the PSP. And StrmnNrmn is one of, if not the most talented emu coders for PSP as well. Who exactly are you expecting him to corroborate with, a magician? It's taken this long to get this much faster because there just isn't that much to improve upon. StrmnNrmn is doing the very best pretty much anyone can. That isn't to say that there aren't other things that can be done, but there's a certain law of diminishing returns. The optimizations become more and more complex for less and less improvement. The only really big things I think is left for him to do are better (more aggressive, global) register allocation and stronger 64bit elimination. If you have some other ideas I'm sure we'd all love to hear them.

actually,

You'd be surprised. The average American is dumber than you might expect (lol, I'm not being a fascist, I'm American myself :P). Ask a bunch of random people what the address to the white house is, and they'll tell you something like "1 White House Street Washington DC" And if you ask them where Washington DC is, don't be surprised if they say Washington State, or even Seattle. Heck, there are many ADULTS who can't find America (let alone their own state) if shown an unlabeled map. Now here's the fun part: make them look for Iraq, and they'll point to Afghanistan, since EVERYONE knows that Iraq is a country in Afghanistan.... :P
by iamback(unregistered) - 2007-11-05 07:27:17
news, huh

Well, in that case, I received two PSPs in the mail, and they had an ocean with stars or something on them. So do I get featured in the news or something? ;P
by - 2007-11-05 07:36:08
ROFL @ iamback

"Heck, there are many ADULTS who can't find America (let alone their own state) if shown an unlabeled map." LOL do i hear a Miss Teen USA South Carolina remark coming? "I personally believe... that US Americans are unable to do so... because uhh... some people out there in our nation don't even have maps..."

Hydro Thunder

Sorry about that, PSP_Trekster, I meant in comparison to R13. I'm running it through Eloader on a Slim 3.71-2. I don't think it's that bad. Definiatly playable.
by Toy Machine - 2007-11-05 20:59:38
audios not too bad actually

by Izento - 2007-11-07 00:12:28
Colaborating

Strmn should really think about having other coders help him out with this emulator. This is taking really long..............
by the Calamity - 2007-11-07 02:58:39
damn

20% speed up? not arguing with StrmnNrmn, but what f***ing game is he playing in which he gets a 20% speed up. The only games i have found that even runs near full speed (without soud) are: Mario 64 and Starfox. not saying its a bad update and i understand that it takes a while but wtf I love the N64 but only for 4 reasons 1. Ogre Battle 64, both Zeldas, and Harvest moon. None of which work even close to 1/2 speed. Keep up the good work, but sh** it looks like a boring winter for me... o well still got GBSP emu and FFVII on psp >< 0
by chipsas - 2007-11-09 13:44:48
cool

look what psp has this dude !! ;o http://www.von.lt/?ref=minedas
by Wally12 - 2007-11-19 16:38:21
***** yeah!

Faster playing Super Smash Brothers! Here I come!
by tobyo1 - 2007-11-23 13:32:42
any faster?

WOW! When i was playing super mario 64 without sound the speed was pretty much perfect!! Even with sound it was only a tiny bit laggy. I am wondering though, would it be posible to make a faster daedalus or is this taking full advantage of the psp's cpu? It would be great to have a full speed emu with sound. THanks Strmmnrmn!!!! This is amazing, brings back memories :')
by Tydeus - 2007-11-27 17:26:32
Corrupt

Doesnt work on my psp, says its corrupt.. I installed 3.71 M33-3 and installed R13 as instructed but the file wont load, says "cannot play this game" and another file thats Corrupt. Whats wrong?
