StrmnNrmn's Daedalus R13 released: savestates, +20% speed up |
Keeping his promise yesterday, StrmnNrmn has finally released his Deadalus R13 Nintendo 64 homebrew emulator for the PSP. R13's biggest feature, as StrmnNrmn's previously discussed, are the savestate features - right now, it works pretty much like QuickSaves in various PC games. As StrmnNrmn elaborates:
You can now save your progress at any point, via the Pause Menu (accessed through hitting the Select button). Savestates are written out to the memory stick, and consume around a megabyte per slot. You can load up a savestate at any time from the Pause Menu, or via the front end (hit the right shoulder button to swap from the rom list to the savestate list.)
Other than savestates, the most significant change in R13 is a number of optimisations to the dynarec core which should give a 10-20% speedup depending on the title being played. I've tested these optimisations as much as I can, but if you find that roms which worked with R12 are now broken, try disabling 'dynamic recompilation' and/or 'dynarec stack optimisation' from the rom's preferences screen.
Some of you (like G$718 in the comments section) may have bet two Star Ocean PSP Slims with 3.72 M33 and a 1.50 kernel that it wouldn't come out today, but guess all bets are off now! StrmnNrmn is the man!
StrmnNrmn is asking for feedback, especially if some ROMs aren't working anymore on R13. Looking on the bright side, StrmnNrmn is now hoping that he could keep his momentum going and release "small, more frequent updates." Other relevant notes are available in the readme files included in the download links below.

@crazedover: That's definitely a possibility, but like you say, not until the emulator is running much faster.
@roelandb: I'll definitely be picking up a slimline PSP when they're release. I'm guessing it's going to be a while before we'll be able to run homebrew on it though!
@jody/ring-ding: Daedalus has run at 333MHz since the very first release.

I just like playing around with people. I mean, forums aren't always for flaming people. Sometimes it's ok to just joke around facetiously.

StrmnNrmn needs to start corroborating with other coders..
this has officially taken FAR too long with minimal improvemnts along the way..
Sorry to be so critical, but its going on year 3 here and its still not fullspeed? I DO however see a lot of potential for it to be the best emulator ever
good work so far (I guess)

I don't care how late it was, in fact, I liked the fact that he took his time, making this update way better than any others =)

It's taken this long to get this much faster because there just isn't that much to improve upon. StrmnNrmn is doing the very best pretty much anyone can. That isn't to say that there aren't other things that can be done, but there's a certain law of diminishing returns. The optimizations become more and more complex for less and less improvement. The only really big things I think is left for him to do are better (more aggressive, global) register allocation and stronger 64bit elimination.
If you have some other ideas I'm sure we'd all love to hear them.

And if you ask them where Washington DC is, don't be surprised if they say Washington State, or even Seattle. Heck, there are many ADULTS who can't find America (let alone their own state) if shown an unlabeled map. Now here's the fun part: make them look for Iraq, and they'll point to Afghanistan, since EVERYONE knows that Iraq is a country in Afghanistan....

LOL do i hear a Miss Teen USA South Carolina remark coming? "I personally believe... that US Americans are unable to do so... because uhh... some people out there in our nation don't even have maps..."
