PSP Slim - Image 1QJ.NET reader CJ has pointed us towards a new homebrew release from Chilly Willy and CaptShoe. The collaboration between ChillyWilly and CaptShoe has resulted in Snes9xTYL 0.4.2 ME for the PSP Slim, an update of the non-ME PSP Slim version AhMan released a while back. Here's the changelog:
  • Ported to use 3.xx compatible MediaEngine library.
  • Fixed button detection in key redefine screen when map analog to pad is enabled.
  • Sound issues reduced, but not entirely. This would require more time.
  • L+R functionality replaced by Home button. To quit, tap Home twice.
  • The time to get back to the XMB should now be decreased. Homehook.prx courtesy of NJ.
  • Simplified welcome message with the ability to disable completely.
  • Option to turn off intro animation.
  • New snesadvance.dat (speedhacks) by Illegal Machine and Warkobo. Thanks!
  • New XMB graphics.
Aside from bringing SNES emulation goodness to the PSP Slim, this SNES emulator also works fine on old PlayStation Portables. According to Chilly Willy, this version is hardcoded to run at 333 MHz since the PSP Slim hangs when you change the CPU speed while MediaEngine is running.

This version of Snes9xTYL also burns up a lot of juice. Chilly Willy says that "sleep mode has been disabled since sleep would have done nothing at all". Both the CPU speed change and the battery drain issues are being worked on and should be fixed in a later release.

Please read the documentation files included in the download before installing this application.

Great job guys! I really didn't think this would be possible on the Slim w/o 1.5 access, bravo!!

Now all we need is DGen 1.7 on Slim and I'll stop being a phat holdout. :)

I'm guessing this can run on phat PSPs as well (firmware 3.x+). I'm going to test it out, the improvements sound great.

well i would normally be very excited about snes emus for psp slim but without sleep mode it may as well be 'complete and utter garbage'.

nice job i wont use this app cuz i have a ton of decent programs that actually work.

scores 1/5 from my point of view.

I have a psp because it's sleep feature is better than any other consoles. savestates serve the same purpose on pc.

so instead of just turning it off, now i gotta activate menu, savestate (that speed varies by ms) and then exit app?

useless. waste of time. whateva. (sorry devs but we need sleep as it is the most useful function on a handheld.)

i will continue to appreciate the previous version as much as possible. thanks for that one. good try on this one too bad it was for nothing. zsnes runs better than perfect on my pc, xbox and macbook.

everyone that i installed the last one that didnt have sleep just deleted it and gave up on psp snes.

they're having a blast with NJ's emus though. and everyone loves brunni's gui, sms/gbc.

i'm at college right now, and my little electronic friends aren't with me, so I can't guarantee it, but the article says it runs well on both models.

Oh, and yes, I need dgen too! ;P

ouch, xyal_zx sounds really bitter. Hey, I mean they tried! I'm not trying to be rude or sarcastic, but maybe if you know how to program a sleep function that works, you can tell them about it? I'm sure they'll be more than happy to implement it. Besides, it's a work in progress. It's not even halfway done according to the version number.

insnt using the media engine what makes it not able to sleep? do you think these guys are emu authors? your wrong. they just port apps. they're psp coders but i doubt they know how to write their own emu. thats my point is give credit where its due. since they didnt write snes9x there's not much credit due at all. they're just a step above hackers. im bitter as h**k cuz ive been waiting over 3 years for a decent snes and genesis emulator for psp. everything else i wanna play on it works at 110%.

You selfish bastard. We also need the latest NesterJ ported, because after all, it is the best emulator for the PSP -- period.

Illegal Machine and Warkobo did not create any of the new speedhacks. They merely linked to them for Chilly Willy to include in the download.

The official SNES Advance SuperDAT is found at http://www.pocketheaven.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=3366 and is contributed to by mog123, acelightning70, and I, among others.

The only difference between the one on that page and the one in this download is that Super Mario RPG and Star Fox entries were added, both of which were created by me, dantheman.

I'm not trying to shift credit to myself but merely to point out that Illegal Machine and Warkobo didn't actually create any of the speedhacks, which the article seems to imply.

I've only played NES through e[m]ulator, which runs great (though not sure if it works on Slim). How much better can NES emulation get?

release replies should include some sort of feedback in regards to the functionality and features of the program.

emotional and opinionated posts are a waste of everyone's time and resources. side comments are always the lamest btw.

One really nice feature of this emu is although sleep mode is disabled the sleep trigger does not turn off the music and sound. a nice feature would be to make it turn the light to 0 setting and muted it until a button was pressed. like a screen saver. that would be the best.

# Very slow in game, but very fast in menu.kupomogli 2007-10-17 17:07
I like how they reworked the menu so it's really fast moving around in the menu in comparison to the older versions, but in comparison to Ruka's ++ version of TYL, this one sucks, badly.

Also. The snesadvance.dat file is not a ripoff of Mog123's though the .dat file isn't nearly as good Mog123's. The only thing about the .dat file by Illegal Machine and Warkobo is the Front Mission Gun Hazard speed hack.

Front Mission Gun Hazard plays 60fps with no frame skip. If only they added all of Mog123's speed hacks and used the Front Mission Gun Hazard Speed Hack, then it'd rule. So unfortunately, I won't be playing Gun Hazard at 60fps without frame skip for awhile :(.

It could have been the same .dat file as Mog123's. It's only 1kb more. I might have actually had a different .dat file and it could have saved the speed hack from Front Mission Gun Hazard.

I just fired it up and noticed how much slower F-Zero ran. :( Then I realized I was comparing it to Ruka's ++ version (32 build).

Since Ruka posts his source code, it would be great if ChillyWilly and CaptShoe could use that version in the future (*praying*).

kupomogli - couldn't you just append the speedhack for Front Mission to Mog123's dat file?

"I've only played NES through e[m]ulator, which runs great (though not sure if it works on Slim). How much better can NES emulation get?"

The difference between the version that currently works on Slim and the one I'm requesting be ported over might be negligible, but the ego in me naturally wishes it were ported.

I've owned an actual NES and this emulator is the closest thing there is to outright perfection. It represents the highest of genius. It's a shame Rucka isn't on top of it, but then again, he mightn't have a Slim as yet.

I don't know what you're talking about... I've had a PSP since it came out AND I have a PSP Slim, and SNES emulation has been perfected for years now..

I also have version 0.4.2 running perfectly on my Slim with no glitches either. Sleep functions exactly as I think it should on both PSP's.

So I guess my question is, why bother with the ME version at all?

I've had NesterJ running on my Slim since the day it came out. You just have to make sure you download the HenD version, works like a charm.

What devs really need to do is take DAX's full screen tv-out mod and implement it into their emus asap, that's the only feature I feel the Slim is in need of.

# Emulator speed issuespwandz 2007-10-18 03:59
At the risk of sounding like a total noob - this emulator seems to run like a total dog on almost all games. DKC is unplayably slow unless frameskip is turned up high, and then it (obviously) skips and becomes unplayably skippy. About the only game I've seen that doesn't slowdown like crazy is that lame Kirby game, but who even played that in the first place?

Is this just a temporary thing or have SNES emus for PSP always run this crappily?

Or am I, in fact, missing some vital fix-it-all setting?

If your NesterJ version is 1.11, you haven't read my post thoroughly. The LATEST version is 1.20 Beta.

DKC has never run well **on the first few levels**. All of the latter levels are fine, but first 3 run like ass. Something to do with the multi-animated backgrounds/parallax scrolling. Once you get past those levels, the rest of the game runs fine, even on 0 frameskip. :)

# You wana talk about credit?Illegal Machine 2007-10-18 09:33
No I didn't write any speedhacks..

But I DID get the ball rolling on this project.

I Posted the source for what I thought was the ++ version source on Maxconsole, and Chilly became interested and did it. Im not saying I did anything other than create an intrest.. But I DID make it happen much sooner than it otherwise would have

and I think this runs quite well.. and soon it will be even better... You'll see

Yes, everyone give Illegal Machine credit for literally begging (repeatedly too) ANYONE to make him a SNES emulator. Without him none of this would have been possible. Also, make sure you try out his excellent TG16 emulator, he deserves credit for this too.

Again, I'm not trying to take credit for the speedhacks, despite being one of the people who actually did contribute to them. I'm merely trying to point out that the article implies that you two created the speedhacks, which is an erroneous statement.

I'm not saying you didn't have a role in the emulation, and I fully understand that you helped get the ball rolling. I believe you should be given some credit, yes, but not for the speedhacks.

It's true though that we probably wouldn't have gotten one so soon if it wasn't for you though.

To everyone that is complaining, stop. ChillyWilly didn't have to do this, and this is by no means the best he can do. He has said MANY times that he was doing a quick and dirty port just so people could have a decent SNES emu for slim ASAP. THEN he is going to port Snes9x 1.51 (?) rather than the port of 1.39 that we already have.

And to top it off he says he is making a SegaCD (which apparently means we also get a new Genesis emu) from SCRATCH. All that combined makes him my new favorite dev. :)
