PSPVBA

Big news for the PSP Emulation scene today.  A new Gameboy Advance emulator was released in our very own QJ.net Forums.  Here are the updates for you.

- Better Speed
- Add new render modes (scanline)
- Add FPS/CPU statistics
- The Start key is now usable
- Sound off increase speed
- Many bug fix
- Big Code cleaning

Two binary versions of the emulator (for 2.0 and 1.5) and sources are included in the zip archive.  Also the game does not work with the Tiff exploit for those of you trying to run it on newer firmware (2.0).  You will have to use the GTA exploit.

This emulator was created by Zx-81, with a help from Tommydanger on the 2.0 firmware debugging.

same speed to me i thin k it goes like 10 fps in gtadavnce 3 i find the games running smoother at 0 frame skip not 1 or 2 goes like 6 fps the higher you put it which would make sense but it just looks ugly
by - 2006-06-30 19:15:06

by - 2006-06-30 19:20:43
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What r great games for the Gba??? And great job with the pspvba and keep on coming out with updates for it
by - 2006-06-30 19:23:37
asd

its still slow, the only good thing in this release is the option to show your fps. O'well its getting there. id rather see GBAPSP being worked on, i feal its more organized.
by - 2006-06-30 19:26:57
Hey...

All those saying it looks bad still or is still slow. OR, you would rather see GBAPSP worked on... shut the hell up. Zx-81 is working on it for us, unlike you who are just waiting for people to create all these homebrew apps/emulators for you. SO be grateful for what you get, and if you don't like it, do it you ***king self! Nice work Zx-81! :D
by - 2006-06-30 19:28:58
Great game for GBA?

Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Mario stuff, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy I & II, ummm Street Fighter II Turbo Revival, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, Several others i cant think of...
by eggwonder - 2006-06-30 19:32:35
sweeeeet

well i played a naruto game and it wasnt slow at all but the music was crappy and after a certain lvl evrything got all pixelated and just really blockish but otherwise fun game, great emu and now i just want to get fire red or leaf green pokemon to work without crashing my psp. btw i dont know where but i think somewhere it said zx-81 has a 2.5 psp and he said he develops for all firmwares so its quite pointless to ask if it works on a specific firmware(it say in the article 2.0 cant use it)
by - 2006-06-30 19:34:45

uhmn

Not tried this yet- but I was thinking, can you turn the sound off to get a framerate increase? :-) Also good games : Advance Wars, Final Fantasy Advance, and that megaman exe thingy :-)
by - 2006-06-30 19:39:25
When your done...

Quick review on 1.5 w/Metroid Fusion - still slow, but definatly playable - sound is improving but don't expect too much. Shuts down when trying to run Super Street Fighter 2 - Turbo Revival. Don't stop on this ZX, I'm checking hourly for updates - it's moving at a great pace - thanks! When you release the final - what would it take to get you to take a look at porting a Mame32 emu?
by - 2006-06-30 19:49:13
oooooohhhhh yeahhhhhh!

YES! Game boy advance emulator still being improved, can't wait for that day i can play KH well on it. I feel stiff just thinking about those glorious days. I am so turned on now, im gonna go blow my load on working class americans now, as soon as i find my viagra.
by djthegreatidiot - 2006-06-30 19:50:54
Late.......

Once again QJ staff is a little late. This has been in the forums for a couple hours.

ZX-81

zx-81, you are one talented coder.. good stuff
by - 2006-06-30 19:58:46
speed

hmn, I tried Micromachines, runs at 64% with no sound and 60% with sound, 10fps apparently. Almost there, but not quite! Good luck on the project guys!
by (+[__]+) - 2006-06-30 20:07:40
2.60

Works great!! Nice work Zx-81! :D THX
by - 2006-06-30 20:25:13
well

Well, its somewhat playable with Castlevania Cirlce Of the Moon. The sound is still kinda weird, but i dont really care about sound...i care more about the FPS. If there was a way to dramatically raise the FPS and this would be perfect..still a great step in GBA Emulation. Keep at it
by InTheZone - 2006-06-30 20:34:44
NOOBS

don't try it until the final version or near final version is released. You guys must love playing low fps games or are used to it because I cannot stand slow/low fps/laggy games.
by - 2006-06-30 20:39:18
The Emu god strikes again

I love you man....alot... you da man.

I would like to see the ability to load a GBA Bios. For games like Metroid Zero Mission, you need to load the BIOS for the sound to work correctly, and the metroid series is one of the most popular on the GBA. Anyways great work the speed is much better, but of course, could still use some improvment. I dont really know how hard it would be to implement that feature but im pretty sure it is possible. So please take that into consideration and implement loading the gba.bios file.
by - 2006-06-30 22:21:01
I love homebrew

I just want to say to all the homebrew developers out there, that I appreciate what you're doing. If I could help you out, I definitely would. Once I'm no longer working, I plan to learn how to program for PSPs. But until then, keep up the good work. I can't wait until I can play a non ISO monster hunter on my 1.5 PSP! Now, on topic. Thanks for working on this emu. How fast does this run? I want to be able to play golden sun, advance wars and pokemon on my PSP. Does this run at a reasonable rate? Can you overclock the PSP with this emu?
by - 2006-06-30 22:46:37
Awesome work!

It definitely needs some more development, but this is a HUGE leap forward in GBA emulation on PSP. I'm ecstatic someone didn't forget about the GBA!
by - 2006-06-30 22:50:06
Humh

You can overclock, only game I tried was Advance Wars 2 - Its got playable speed, probably about 65% of the proper speed, I don't think anyone has that patience yet. Sounds in inaudible. Still great improvements from any other GBA emulator - maybe I can play it at a nice speed soon ^^
by - 2006-06-30 23:55:36
Thank you.

Thank you Zx-81, your work on this emulator is greatly appreciated by the homebrew community. For the people who are complaining that there are too many updates/or it's too slow or whatever, GTFO and go make your own GBA emulator.
by - 2006-06-30 23:59:15

Hi Guys, please help me.. i'm on a 2.6 firmware and all i see is a black screen when i load the gba emulator from the eloader in gta.. then all of a sudden, my psp shuts itself off. Any input would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 2.7 can it play on this, what homebrew can I run?

Hey i got my new psp and upgraded to the best firmware yet, 2.7 hooray for me! just wondering if theres a download site for homebrew for 2.7 I tried this gbaemulator and it didn't work, i'll try others though maybe I did something wrong.
by 1.5owner - 2006-07-01 11:33:31
you idiot! (58)

if u had 2.6 or lower u coulda downgraded to 1.5. Homebrew coded in C++ doesn't work at all on 2.7! That damn sony tries to block it! Oh well, i guess u should look for homebrew coded in flash for the flash player great emu btw. I actually think this is headed in a better direction than PSPGBA cause the sound works better. I don't think gba will ever get the sound straight. Perhaps it can be compiled with vba's sound engine, but i have no idea if that would work or how to do it and to all the idiots who would rather have a GBA emulator than an N64 one, ur idiots!! hmmm, here's zelda minish cap on one side and ocarina of time on the other, which ever will i pick? I guess it is cool to emulate a system that's still being developed on, and has much newer games, but n64 has so many classics as well as good 3D hardware!

Does any one know the link to a good downgrade for 2.0 firmware to 1.5 without bricking it?
by - 2006-07-01 13:19:19
??

To Zx-81 and any other 2.5/2.6 downgrader, Have you tried the 2.5/2.6 downgrader? If you have can you tell us your results?
by zx-81 - 2006-07-01 13:45:06
@62

If i brick my PSP i won't be able to continue this emulator lol ... so i'm waitting for a really stable downgrader :).
by zx-81 - 2006-07-01 13:48:13
@all

Thanks for your encouragements :). This emulator is going better and better each time, thanks to you and your good feedbacks and advices ! So many thanks to each of you ! Zx

by - 2006-07-02 07:08:08
Does anything run near full speed?

Just wondering if anyone has found anything that already runs at near full speed. The stuff I tried was pretty slow. At any rate, thanks to zx-81 and keep up the good work.
by - 2006-10-20 05:24:10
