PSP homebrew: Snes9X Euphoria R1 |
Ó

Homebrew developer Zack has released Snes9X Euphoria R1, an SNES emulator for the PSP based on Ruka's Snes9xTyl. This release deals mainly with speed, so if you're running into framerate problems on your old SNES emulators you might want to give this a try.
Here are some notes from the dev:
The only game I have tested with my version is Kirby Super Star, which I know had terrible FPS with other Snes9X releases (usually < 30Fps)
With my build, using the following settings, Kirby Super Star runs @ a minimum of 44Fps and a max of 60fps with the usual fps being 50fps.
- Settings :
- Renderer : PSP Accelerated
- FrameSkip : 3
This does not generate a jerky experience, it finally feels playable.
Other testing :
- Donkey Kong Country : Same settings as above :
- Min FPS : 58
- Max FPS : 60
The speedups should be global, every game should be a lot faster now.

Super Mario RPG is *very* much more playable in this version, just be sure to set Video>Frameskip to "Auto"
some battles (namely with Bosses) slow down because of backgrounds, but you can turn off backgrounds in the Misc>Hack/debug menu
I was wondering when they would release a new snes emulator. D:
Good work tho, this should show the people who keep pushing for N64 and DS emulators that if they can't perfect the SNES emus, that its not some cakewalk to code for this tiny beast. Hopefully one day I'll be able to play Super Mario RPG in all its SNES glory on my DS, as its my favorite RPG of all time, even over Chrono Trigger.
Awesome job! Made a account just to say thanks and please continue making the SNES emu better. The SNES is one of my favorite systems and I really hate it because its a forgotten emulator. Thanks! (Plays Mario RPG)
on m33 3.90 phat and it crashed. But to comment on symbyosis idea to get a good SNES emu on the DS . It probably won't be feasible in the present gen. of that system. A portable SNES was the main reason i bought the PSP . The actual games for that system does not really interest me.
I meant on PSP I was talking about that one kid who keeps asking for a DS emu on PSP, and I was trying to state that if they cant get a SNES to run properly how are they gonna do DS lol..sorry about the mix up
Thank u so much.
Kirby Super Star is like all I play on this emu. You've made my dream come true! O.O thanks \m/
Nice to hear someone has trying to improve the old emulator. Though, doesn't using the frameskip feel like cheating? Doesn't it effect on audio sync?
It really would be nice if someone still has interest and gifts to address some of the remaining issues with Snes9x. For example font in Romancing Saga 3 is unreadable when you choose a character.
Anyone have recommended settings for DKC? It's still unplayable slow in the default.
Okay I see the DKC settings above. I'll have to try them out now! :)
Just a heads up to everyone here, this emulator has absolutely no speed increases from SNES9xTYL. This is what I did for testing:
PSP-1000, 5.50 GEN B Full
Tested games: Chrono Trigger, Yoshi's Island, Kirby Superstar
SNES9xTYL 0.4.2
Snes9x Euphoria R1
With identical settings between both emulators (PSP Accelerated, frame skip 0), the FPS was identical with TYL and Euphoria. Using the settings mentioned by the dev will obviously net you higher FPS, but you can do the same with TYL (or any emulator, for that matter).
Chrono Trigger ran exactly the same, but under Euphoria, there were some graphical errors. Menus would not fully display, and characters would render in the wrong order (person behind you would overlap) while using PSP Accelerated.
Yoshi's Island was also the same, but with graphical problems again. The number of star would not display (numbers were behind the black circle), and the start screen only displayed about half the island.
Kirby Superstar was the same story as above. Identical FPS, but with added display problems.
There is also a nasty bug in this build. Kirby Superstar (and possibly other games) breaks the functionality of returning to the menu. If you run Kirby Superstar, the only way to exit is to hard reboot the system. Also, any other extra mapping is broken. For example, setting an analog direction to change frameskip or engine change will not work. There is a bit of a workaround, by setting new options, then saving them as default, THEN running the game as default (with square). Setting the engine to Accurate soft. will do the same thing to any other game.
So, in short, Euphoria is identical in every way to TYL (down to the version number). But introduces menu bugs, and rendering glitches. The dev's method of setting the frameskip will get you the exact same result in TYL.
would you mind conducting a speed test against the previously released snes9xTYL MECM?
http://pspslimhacks.com/super-nintendo-snes-emulator-snes9xtyl-mecm-091011-3/
Well, I tested with all the same games, and there was a -slight- increase with MECM. By slight, I mean maybe 2-5FPS. As for the extra graphical glitches, they weren't there either.
Of note though, some of those problems pop up in any version of Snes9x I tried. Things like the menu in Chrono Trigger not displaying right under PSP accelerated engine. That happened in all three. But, Euphoria had extra glitches under all engine mode that neither of the other two had.
So again, in short, FPS wise, TYL and Euphoria are identical, but MECM had a slight FPS increase. Graphics-wise, TYL and MCEM are identical, but Euphoria introduced a few extra glitches. And lastly, there are some weird Snes9x menu bugs in Euphoria.
