PS1P-Alpha 1 PSOne emulator for the PSP *UPDATE*

PS1P playing FFVII. Enough said.

Presumably the one big disappointment with Sony's FW 3.0 PSOne emulator is that you need a PS3 to download the game files to begin with, and those aren't exactly a dime a dozen. So, that leaves the stand-alone homebrew PSOne emulators from the scene. Anonymous Coder has just released his PS1P-Alpha 1 PSOne emulator for the PSP. Not to be confused with the almost similarly-named PSX-P (PS1) emulator by Yoshihiro (now v2), but looking forwards to the same functionality. There were rumors that this emulator was to be made to support only a single game. That concept was discarded as the author decided to write a single emulator to support multiple games. You can read a few words from the Anonymous Coder below.

The wait is worth it. I'm releasing a version that will run anything. ISO, BIN, Z and ZNX. The rest you know. scph1001.bin and images in the __SCE__ps1p directory.

This version has some compatibility problems which I plan to fix soon, for example the FF7 intro movie doesn't run. You can play the game though, just get past the intro using a standard PC emulator (PCSX, ePSXe, ...) and copy over the memory card file ( mcd001.mcr or mcd002.mcr).

Use L+R+ up/down to tweak the CPU timing. I think L2 and R2 aren't working at the moment too. --A.C.

P.S.: to make things clear. This emulator has nothing to do with PCSX, psx4all or any other emulator already released. The only thing I did was use for the game selection screen, the same font code that psx4all uses--it's from some GP2X demo/app.

The app isn't perfect yet, but they're getting there. Something else to add to the list of homebrew PSOne emulators floating around teh interwebs.

Reminder from the editor: Please note that even though we support homebrew, we do not condone piracy. Hence, we would like to remind everyone that we welcome all your comments, BUT we would also like to ask everyone to please refrain from asking for or giving links for ISOs and the like. This could lead to the banning of the poster of the comment which contains such material and we really don't want to do that because we love you all, 'kay? Thanks.

UPDATE: under the category of "Why didn't you tell us that before?", wraggster returns to DCEmu to drop a few additional tips and tricks from Anonymous Coder. It may be just what you need to get whatever PSOne game you want to run running. Hopefully. Read on:

The CPU thing is adjusting the counters relative speed. Note it has a % at the side. It's like making the PS1 CPU run faster or slower. The right value is at 100% (obviously) but the default is 700% (good for FF7 :P). Lots of games runn better at something lower than 700. It does nothing to the PSP CPU so you can set it as high as you want. But after some point it actually starts to be slower.

There's save state, L+R+left to save, L+R+right to load (or the opposite).

Analog can be used for controlling (as if it was the d-pad).

The BIOS must be called scph1001.bin and be placed in the __SCE__ps1p directory along with the BIN, ISO, IMG, Z or ZNX images. Other BIOSes should work too but rename them to scph1001.bin because the emulator looks for this file specifically.

People can use PocketISO (google for it or the FPSEce page) to compress images to Z and ZNX.

The ePSXe memory cards must be renamed to mcd001.mcr and mcd002.mcr and placed in the __SCE__ps1p directory.

by - 2006-11-25 21:24:02
Nice

This is a great emulator i hope games can be run at full speed some day I also hope this could also have sound Keep up the good work Anonymous coder
by - 2006-11-25 21:25:08
questions...

Does it include sound? How fast does it run?
by - 2006-11-25 21:26:58
Tip

I have been following the news for this emulator for a while and to my knowledge this is a DCEmu exclusive.
by - 2006-11-25 21:44:34
yea

gah nice!
by - 2006-11-25 21:48:19
holy sh1t!

damn this runs way faster than psx-p. l trigger + r trigger + directional up! omg! i can't believe it!
by - 2006-11-25 21:49:59
no iso of mine works on my 1.5...

Could be just my bad luck plus they are not offically ripped from cds... press SELECT will cause the program to freeze on mine. all iso will stuck at Loading Game .... Iso that I tried are (these all work under epsx on PC) tekken3 fft castlevania SoTN SF2EX Anyone else got any luck besides FF7?
by - 2006-11-25 21:50:58
wait..?

haha, i just downloaded the pspsone (or whatever the otherone was) today... and got the sch1001 or w.e. for it. and this comes out? and is this better? i want to play silent hill, metal gear solid, and maybe ridge racer (RIIIIIDDGGGEEE RACCEEERR!!!) haha, but if anyone has tried this PLEASE!! tell us how it is and if it runs smooth. and a COMPLIST would be nice too :) thanks to all (my iso's are still dling. so i cant test) R U :-) ?
by - 2006-11-25 21:56:39
Only in the beginning

The PS3 will only be used in the beginning and later on when the PS3 Store is finally stable will we see PSone games available without the need for PS3.
by - 2006-11-25 21:57:22
YES

This DOES run faster than psx-p and no there is NO sound. FF9 also works! Try it out! it's so pretty
by - 2006-11-25 21:59:41
ALRIGHT

ff7? psp? all i need...
by - 2006-11-25 22:02:45
oops...

*bonk self* I copied the wrong bios.. 1000 instead of 1001. I can see SF2 load and play really slowly. Tekken loads but stuck at Namco logo. SoTN doesn't work at all. FFT will hang after the Square Soft logo... So still no game really plays... btw what % of cpu is safe.. I was at 1600% and keep going... I don't really think it really mean 1600% cpu or I am reading it really wrong.... +)

File Placement

Can you just put ISOs in the non-% folder right beside the BIOS and EBOOT.PBP? or do you have to create seperate directories within that folder for ISOs and the BIOS and such?

As already stated, there is no sound in this version. Good day.
by GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-25 23:43:27
Anon is right...

It game directly from Sony that the PS3 would be used at first to send games to the psp, but they would eventually allow users to use their psp to download the games. If you do some searching around, I'm sure you'll find the announcement.
by - 2006-11-25 23:43:32
Amazn

This is the first time I could get a ps1 emu working. Finally. You rock. Ridge racer plays pretty slowly but had very little graphical problems. Great great job. Love it. This could definitely be the single best homebrew in the future.
by CrashCore - 2006-11-25 23:45:08
great!

Awesome job, keep up the great work. This is looking extremely promising. I can't wait to see what this looks like in a few months!
by GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-25 23:45:47

yeah excellent job to you anomynous coder donno if i spelled that right. you really know how to please the fans im starting to rip my own iso's now so see which ones work. im guessing mpeg1 doesn't work but it'll be well worth it. i can already imagine a full speed emu with sound playing castlevania SOTN all damn day or ff7. Caleb you put the iso's and bins in the same directory as the eboot. i would tell you where to get them hint hint but i kinda like posting here why not surf around and google it

by - 2006-11-26 00:06:48
Something someone may be able to answer

Whenever you run UMD's using Devhook, the battery life (at 100%) drops from 7 hours, to 3 and a half roughly. I know it's because of the energy it's using to spin the UMD. Whenever I play SNES, Genesis, (homebrew), or watch movies, the hours stay at 7 hours. So is this how it will be with this PS1 emulator? A whole 7 hours? If so, I'll never really play a UMD for a long time, haha.

by - 2006-11-26 00:41:50
Good Stuff, any options?

The emu is freakin amazing! I just got FF7 loaded up, and my mind is blown! This is one of the greatest things since the GBA emu (GBSP). Quick question though, does the emu have any special options, settings, or commands? Like framerate/frameskip or clockspeed viewing or altering? And if so, are they changed thru a file or done through a button or combination of buttons on the PSP? Thanks in advance and thanks to AC for this awesome Emu. Keep it up!
by - 2006-11-26 00:48:55
save file

ok, i have the savedata file for ff7 but i dont know where to put it and what the file extension is, i have one thats mcd001.mcr and scus-94163.000? where do i need to put the save data files and do i have the right ones?

Metal Gear Solid - Goes to the menu fine - Doesnt go in-game
by xche78x - 2006-11-26 01:32:26
too early on release

it didnt give the BANG for sony's register yet. we dont mind if you take time to release your next revision just as long as it runs at 50-60 fps with no bells and whistles you should : implement sound remove the extra pretty graphics (add it later when emulator run at full speed) do a save state like on the gpSP emulator concentrate on a single game like ff7 to make it run perfectly. think of a nice button mapping for l2 and r2 (like pressing select + r = r2) or select + sqaure for emulator menu's etc. you can also program your emulator to skip any FMV (for higher compatibilty)
by - 2006-11-26 01:44:54
Wow...

A little picky, eh killer? Let it go. Don't you think the programmer already knows what needs to be done?

i have tons of ps1 games, how can i convert tHem to iso files so i can play them w/ the emulator? HELP!!!!!!
by axelixc - 2006-11-26 02:25:49
Hey NOOb

Just put msc1001.mcr to ms0>PSP>GAME>__SCE__ps1p>(put here 2gether wif the ff7 game img). scus-94163.000 is just a quick save when u play ff7 in pc. u dun need dis in psp.

Do you...

not understand the world ILLEGAL!? Go buy the games legally on ebay or at a local store. If you think spending a small amount of money to buy FF7 legally is bad, you'll crap your pants if you get sued thousands of dollars by being caught illegally downloading a game. I'd sure be happy if more people like you we're sued so that the game industry could finally get justice!

...

They need to find an exploit, develop into it, find out if a downgrader is possible for it, then finally make the downgrader. It's not that a dev just wakes up and thinks 'I'll just spend a few hours making a 3.01 downgrader.' A lot of work has to go into finding the exploit alone.

FF7 doesn't work for me! Is there anything special I have to do? It just stays on he 'loading game' screen for ages (20mins and counting). Is it because I'm using a PAL version? Has anyone else had any luck with PAL games?
by SpankyMCnoodle - 2006-11-26 05:55:21
Don't UPDATE EVER

Useing devhook you can play every game out now except cabelas african safari. Why would anyone update, unless you have PS3 and want the handful of ps1 games they are selling.

I understand now. In ff7 it can't start the game on its own without the game save file because of the movie issue. AHHA. For all the noobs and people who couldn't get it to work that is what was wrong.

How do I create an ISO file?

I have the bloody original FF7 disc, but I am too retarded to create an ISO file... No matter what program I use (alcohol, nero, IsoMagic, IsoBuster) I can only create images in some *****ing formats nobody needs (like mds, cue, bin, ccd etc). So HOW do I create a *****ing ISO that I can actually use with this emulator?
by Barts_706 - 2006-11-26 12:21:57
Please make YouTube movies!

I would film the thing myself, but my digital camera is in repair right now. I would like to post a movie of FF7 running on this emulator on my blog. If you happen to upload it, send me address in a comment on : http://bartsnews.blogspot.com/2006/11/crash-bandicoot-on-psxp.html or at any post at : http://bartsnews.blogspot.com/ I will be very grateful and of course will give all the credit to the author. I'm not talking bout the emulator, byt the schp1001.bin file, get that legally or of a torrent(where the copyright people can't do ***** to stop). Delete the file from the space before sony shuts you down.

Problem with Rom?

I just downloaded the zip file, unpacked it, and then copied the %__SCE__ps1p and __SCE__ps1p folders to the GAME directory of my 1.5 firmware psp. I also dropped the .bin file of FF7 that I ripped right off the actual game in my computer tray. I can access the PS1P startup, and it shows FF7-1.bin in my selectable files, but it just sits "loading game" forever. Was there something I missed, or is it some sort of problem with the .bin file?
by - 2006-11-26 16:16:15

ff7

yes. for you who got ff7 to work please tell me what you encoded the disc to iso with. what you named the save files. and why my psp can't seem to detect any files. I used epsxe to get the save game
by - 2006-11-26 16:28:13
Can't get it to work

I'm using the right bios with the right filename, my FF7 CD iso and the saved game and I still get stuck at loading game.
by - 2006-11-26 16:31:17
ff7

Yes. I finally got the save file to work. What i did was copy the MC folder from psx-p alpha two then i also put a memcard folder in the ps1-p file directory aka Sce_ps1p. I then put the meory card file in both those folders and one in the main and it worked! This is a fairly comlicated process for newbs. Please just send them my way. THX

by - 2006-11-26 18:07:53
Works in eLoader !

Just tested it on my TA-082 with fm 2.71, on eLoader 0.995. Tested with Ridge Racer. Not what I call "playable", but for an Alpha it is really promising ! It is probably ok to play adventure games with it though (games where the fps is not essential...). No sound, as others have already said. Very good work !!!

what program do i use to make my cds into isos??????
by axelixc - 2006-11-26 18:51:54
read the d@mn post carefully !

yr game n bios have nothing wrong. it's just they movie intro bug tat dis emu currently has. yr ff7 froze with light blicking. to pay the movie intro, u need to play yr ff7 in yr pc using ps emulator for pc (example pcsx). dis will get u pass the intro movie (pcsx is full speed in pc) play until u come to the 1st save point. save it under virtual memory card called " mcd001.mcr ". then copy dis mcr file to ms0>PSP>GAME>__SCE__ps1p>(put here along wif the game image). now start the game but dun click new game, instead click continue > select slot 1 > load up yr save game. n the game will continue (without sound)...at the turn where after u kill the 1st bost u will run all the way back out of the mako reactor n prepare to go for another movie scene. dis is where it will froze again. (as i said, ps1p currently is still at its infant stage). after the movie bug is fixed, we could expect ff7 to run the whole game. try it out now mate !

no particular name

the save file's name is mcd001.mcr (for slot 1) n mcd002.mcr (for slot 2). these mcr files are universal n are used for all save games. they are the virtual memory card as if u have 2 memory card slotted into the PLAYSTATION ONE HARDWARE.

Memory stick size?

Hey, for anyone who has gotten FF7 to work: Do you have a 1+ GB memory stick to fit a whole disk onto it, or is there a way to partially load a disk? I know, it's kind of a stupid question, but I'm still stuck with a 512MB and I didn't bother to go shop on Black Friday for a bigger one.

wtf

Okay, I got ff7 to work and everything, downloaded the save before the boss. The game is slow, which is wierd beecause everyone is screaming out "ZOMG FULL SPEEDSZ!". The boss fight is SLOW, my psp goes into the little standby mode while the damn boss is busy casting his moves. Is it just me or is it supposed to be this slow? And I have the speed set to 700-800% already. Running it on a 1.50 firmware PSP. Quick reply please.
by axelixc - 2006-11-26 20:25:29
yes it's slow n it's understandable at this alpha stage

u can't increase the overall speed but u can other speed something like battle speed, speech speed etc. u can do it in the ff7 game in the config menu.
by - 2006-11-26 20:33:39
kk

kk, Thanks for the reply. Was just wondering because all the noobs going LOL rUNS FF7 RUNS PERFECTLY!! ;D. I didn't expect it to run at full speed, but this is really impressive. Next release would probably be a good one ;3.

How to install

I have seen to many how to posts so this is for the noobz out there. Unzip the emulator and place _SCE__ps1p and %__SCE__ps1p into the GAME folder on your PSP You will need the bios. You can get it from www-psp-hacks.com. Unpack the bios and place it in the _SEC__ps1p folder where the eboot file is. Any Games you have should also be placed in the same folder. Now you should be able to load the games if the emulator gets stuck on loading game then the bios is either wrong or has been named wrong thats why i suggest using wwwpsp-hacks.com because it works straight from the download. For Final fantasy 7, because the intro does not work you will need to play the game on PC first so that you can obtain a save point. Just go into the memory card folder on the PC emulator and copy and paste the save into the _SEC__ps1p folder on your PSP. Now you will have to rename it to (if you load the emulator first on your psp then go back to the memory card you will see two new files in the _SEC__ps1p folder. Change the names to that. Your now ready to go. Also you can change the CPU speed with L+R+up

What works for me

I have 2.71 SE-C. I converted the two folders using PSP BREW. I have all of the sony bios files so I just took 1001 and placed it in the only folder I have now(since I changed it with pspbrew) I have found that BIN FILES WORK THE BEST. I tried all of the other types w/ no luck. If you convert the image to a bin file it should work. If you dont know how google: converting isos to bin files. Im going to try Oddworld now. - Jusdafide p.s. I tried to get it to work FOREVER BEFORE IT FINALLY DID. Just dont forget anything.

FMVs vs. Cutscenes

The coder says the emu won't play the intro to FF7, does that mean it won't be able to play any FMVs and cutscenes, or it is just a problem with the intro? I played FF7 up to exiting the first reactor, but the game seemed to freeze. If anyone else had this problem, I could confirm if it is a cutscene loading issue or just a random freeze that may not take place a second time through. Thanks in advance for any comments or answers.
by - 2006-11-27 16:15:47

Man, I'm sick of this, I tried everything and always stuck at Loading game. I have converted my iso with pocketiso, downloaded another bios that other people said was working, put the saved game that I got from someone . I'm almost at the verge of forgeting about it.

I havent tried this yet, but may try in an hour or 2. What i want to know is, do we rip the games right from cd to iso, or are their nessary changes that need apllied to each game's files within the iso/IMAGE

...

Doesn't FF7 take like 1.3 gigs though??
by - 2006-11-27 17:10:11
yeah...

Turn out that the ff7 iso pocketiso gave me wasn't working for some reason. I got this thing to work but I am very dissapointed.I'm not whining or anything and understand the work that goes into thing like that, but all the comments from people telling this is fast, OMG FF7 on PSP!1!, playable etc... This isn't true at all. I don't find the current version of the emu playable for me. You can play it, but all the character animation are pretty slow motion.

well you need either 1.5 firmware or 2.71

both 1.5 and 2.71 work BUT!!!!! listen up! Only 2.71 with the C version of dark alex's firmware will work. Any FMV sequences will immediately freeze a game. Fortunately there's a tool that can remove all fmvs from games called pocketiso. Many games cannot load and will seize up (Suikoden, MGS, ff9 freezes in the first battle). ff7 seems completely playable --except for the fact that the battle fps drop to about 1-2 fps while the regular overworld cityscape walking seems about 15-20fps. This is a real progression. I wish i could try Vandal Hearts and final fantasy tactics; they both probably work well.
