PayPal Severs Support for ScummVM |

Ó
We all love our emulators, now don't we? So what would happen if, say, PayPal forced ScummVM to stop asking for donations and to take them (PayPal) out of ScummVM's sight site. Yes. It's sad news in the emulating world, folks. For those of you who don't know, ScummVM is a multiplatform emulator (even available in DS and PSP) that allows you to play certain LucasArts adventure games (like the above Sam and Max).
So now, how could we support emulator developers if we can't even forward donations? It happened a few days ago, actually. PayPal is severing ties with ScummVM with a response that states:
You have developed a game modulator that allows games produced and developed by multiple companies to be played on their non-designated hardware platforms. This act in itself violates the PayPal [Acceptable Use Policy] and we request that you remove PayPal from [your website].
There are many arguments surrounding this issue, including the fact that ScummVM is actually supported and sometimes even actively assisted by original game developers and studios.
Well, we're sure both side have their own reactions to this matter. And surely PayPal has a good reason for not supporting ScummVM anymore. Besides, don't worry. It's not the end of the world. ScummVM is currently looking for other alternatives to seek donation, and we're sure to hear word from them again. So, drop a line, and tell us what you think!

Paypal is horrible. They facilitate online fraud by consumers, and screw over the vendors.

Sony with its rootkits and lots of pursuits against the Internet users, is the worse than an industry parasite.
Boycott them

Oh well of to play more GBA games on the PSP again...:)

They've obviously obtained the rights to Sam and Max as well so they're just rubbing out any perceived 'competition'.
Either that or some knee-jerk lawyers at paypal have been forced to actually DO SOME WORK and ScummVM was tossed into the pile of 'emulators we don't agree with'.
Or perhaps since Capcom, Midway, Activision, Nintendo, Square-Enix, AND Sony are now porting their older SNES/Mega Drive/Genesis/PSOne releases to both the PSP and Nintendo they want to rub out the emulator as we currently know it and this is the first salvo in the new economic war against emulation.
Because who the ***** in their right mind would buy a UMD filled with generic ports of SNES games when they can already play the original SNES games on the PSP as they were originally intended by the publishers?
Exactly. No one is going to buy that.

i would assume at first that this was done as a result of LucasArts' back catalogue sales, but check their site...these titles are sold out. maybe Paypal screwin them isn't a big deal as other similar services exist, but I'm sure this will put a blot on their record and perhaps frighten other such services away from doing business with them.
a lousy way to start the day. maybe we wouldn't be so compelled to power up scummVM again and again if somebody, anybody would release an adventure title with the standards of the many emulated using this software. for now, the devoted fans will find ways to support the work being done to bring us back to those times when original stories sold units rather than half-assed attempts to translate originally well written japanese stories with god-awful american voice actors. (not saying this is always the case, but it often is)

This is one of the best things about this country, with one move ( whether it be boycotting a certain item nationwide like gas or food) we can make a difference, a change. People sometimes don't realize this, but think about it. If the whole US of good ole A one day decided " Hey, I don't think I like all these little petty restrictions you put on us, so we're just as one nation going to stop buying your stuff for a whole week" . Can you IMAGINE what would happen then? But, then again that's just hypothetical thinking.
For those who haven't watched it, I suggest watching V for Vendetta. That movie has one powerful message that I think everybody should take to heart.
But anyway, sad that these people won't be getting donations by pretty much everybody who has a savings account number:P, but hopefully they CAN receive some help, because they're making it possible to revive a classice genre of gaming that pretty much laid some foundation to gaming as we know it today. Good like to the ScummVM guys, keep up the good work

Paypal provides a service and they have the RIGHT to refuse service to ANYONE!!!!
Do you own Paypal? No, so SHUT UP!
I hear a bunch of Boo Hoo about this and it sickens me. These are typical American responses and when it comes down to it they are all actually ANTI American!!!! NO ONE in this country has the RIGHT to demand service from anyone. If you don't like it then start YOUR OWN PAYPAL SERVICE!
So all you little tiny babies can go suck on some more eggs as there is NOTHING you can do about Paypal's decision.
To actually answer your main question:
"This is Bullshxx how can they do this?!?!?!?"
Because it's there RIGHT you morons!!!!!

I'm talking about those people above that are saying Paypal has no right to do this because they are 100% WRONG. Paypal has every right to refuse service.

Basicaly, you can not discriminate in providing your services based upon protecting from competition.
