Well as if the 2.5 / 2.6 Downgrader wasn't big enough news for one weekend, upon checking my email today I noticed an update from longtime GBA developer and reader ZoMbi146. We have been in contact over the last few days and just today I received two brand spanking new teaser shots from ZoMbi146's new Nintendo 64 Emulator.
Work on this emulator which is based on the UltraHLE engine, has been going on for some time. It appears now the emulator will be split into separate eboots that are hard coded for specific roms. For example Mario64 and Zelda would not use the exact same loader. What this allows is for the emulator to be specifically tweaked to run the specific game at the best possible speed, sound and compatibility. A current available and rather general example would be SnesTYL switching graphic modes.
In addition "each version would have special tweaks with optimizations that would make each appropriate rom run correctly at full speed with sound." The games that are currently working in this method are Mario 64, Zelda OOT, and Goldeneye 64.
Just on a side note, the Nintendo 64 was a good platform and did have quite a few games. One of the things that made the system suffer, however, was a rather difficult programming interface. For these games to play very well, or in this case at full speed, is quite an amazing feat.
Not sure about you but I look forward to hearing more from Zombi146 in the coming days. Until then we will be standing on our heads and drooling from the mouth (yuck) as we await the reawakening of Mario 64, Zelda OOT, and Goldeneye on the PSP. Nice work ZoMbi146, nice work!

There was an apha scheduled for release a day or two ago however the author has decided to take some extra time to fine tune the release and this is when I was told the emulator would be split into different loaders per specific rom.
Could be a few days (crosses fingers), however it might also take longer. Only ZoMbi146 could tell you for sure ;)
I call bull*****. The current version of UltraHLE for Xbox can't even run Goldeneye 64 at full speed. Unless they mean full speed with no texture filtering.

this is a great idea, even if this doesnt pull through all the way. People should apply this to SNES emulators too, Id love to see a SNES emulator specifically customized 100% for star fox or mario RPG, since those games a still iffy.

looks authentic enough, and sounds like a pretty awesome idea. a video would have been helpful, and also to prove whether this is fake or not - but I believe this is real. not all developers have cameras to take videos after all.
and we'll find out in a few days whether its real or not anyway.

Wow. This is, by FAR, THE best week the PSP scene has seen in it's entire life. Since a 2.6 downgrader is readily available and a lot of us have 1.5's now, he should implement the Media Engine into the emulator.

#6 read my mind with his post, as I've been tinkering with N64 emulation on my XBox for a little while now and it's FAR from perfect.
#15, I'm going to have to say that mem stick space usage is probably going to be a nonpoint. The roms always take up the majority of the space, whereas the emu requires only minimal. Different Eboots for different games would not require enough space to worry about, unless the GUI was skinable and all that garb.
ANYWAY, release this and surprise me... PLEASE ;).

i much rather all of my roms be shown in a program(emulato r) then in my clutterd games list on my psp. couldnt they make and put these settings in full blown emulators?

Those 3 games are my favourite games for n64, if this comes out, this will be a dream come true. I will play these games all the time. I CANNOT WAIT =D
first off i downgraded my 2.6 to 1.5 today and i must say amazing! now i need to figure out how to install devhook...

1. it wont matter too much about the different loaders because emus generally dont take up a ton of space.
2.this would be absolutely amazing if full speed.
3. does it really all have to be different loaders? couldnt you just set up the emulator to have a specific config of settings that would be in maybe a forum and have all the options in the emu? that way you would run the emu, input the settings for optimized speed, and then save the config for that rom so that every time you loaded it, it would always have the optimized settings.
btw #4 that is disgusting groping handicap ppl. i mean they need love too but just eww...

thats a point, actually. if this was all combined into one single emulator with different settings, it would be able to change the settings automatically depending on what rom it is by simply checking the game name inside the rom.
but for now, multiple eboots is hardly much of a drawback for what could be flawless n64 emulation.
this is too much to take, im the biggest n64 fan, and qj staff trust this guy and we are on good speeds with daedalus and this would have sooo much more memory to work with and thats the only thing strmnnrmn said was causing the slowness but he still said 3Ofps with sound is achievable but this has twice as much memory so it is extreamly possable that this is a real, full speed PSP N64!!!! (i wrote this on my psp at 3.am so thats how excited and enphusiastic i am!)

memory was always a big problem with n64 emus thats why it could run great on my old windows 98 that had good ram, im putting my bet down on this being reak, after seeing what daedalus can do with very little, this will be good,and use the media engine were all on 1.5O now

UltraHLE is a good engine. Great to see it being used. then again, there have been a lot of spoofs so until I am holding my psp in my hands playing one of those at full speed, I cannot have full confidence in it. But after seeing the daedalus and monkey64 speeds and compatibility (not that it is bad, anything is good) I at least have a lot more hope.
What a week for 2.50 and 2.60 btw.

My heart started pounding as I gasp for air when I read this news... I am a diehard fan of all three of those games. I kept up with the n64 news for such a long time and now that I read a full speed emulator is coming out soon I am so excited. Hopefully they come out soon because I can't WAIT!

Great news and I hope some more games will be able to run fullspeed, like Super Smash Brothers (again, would be awesome with Ad Hoc) and Mario Kart 64 (another great Ad Hoc one). Amazing stuff, though!

On 99% of N64 games, the L button is never used, neither is the d-pad. Theres enough buttons on the PSP.

If the ROM is tweaked, the PSP CAN RUN N64 games at full speed. I hope this emulator isn't a fake, but it is possible to run N64 roms at full speed on a PSP.

I may be wrong, but from what I've seen from looking at it and the beta rom, it's pretty much the same apart from a few tweaks. So surely it would be able to be run aswell as the original OOT?

i am really glad this didnt come out earlier, because as soon as it does i will be playing OOT and M64 constantly,. good thing im out of school or i'd flunk out. honestly .... amazing.
Let's just wait until the first version of the emulator is released with functionality for these three games. And THEN requests for further compatability will be useful.
But right now, I'm sure the most important thing on the dev's mind is getting these 3 games working perfectly for the first release.
And if this all turns out well, it's going to be awesome.

The psp's processor includes a MIPS R4000-based CPU. Basically, its like an upgraded N64 processor.
If optimised correctly and efficiantly, the psp CAN emulate n64 perfectly.

Guys common be realistic, now i a one of those people who would love for this to be true just like the majority of you people, but i have had my heart broken by stupid hoaxes and pranks and i dont think my heart has mended quite yet so i am going to remain skeptical as should all you people. I pray this is real and not a load of mumbo humbo but i have a gut feeling which is always 100% right btw not 99.9% or crap like that, that this is a fake. If you guys think about it, we havnt heard from this source before, he hasnt shared a WIP, no announcment prior to an alleged almost complete version, this sounds like a definite fake.
I would LOVE to be proven wrong on this one, but i highly doubt it. Besides, getting full speed is impossible despite what anyone says, if we do get full speed, it will be by a dev who is more well respected in the scene and someone who has spent at least 3 years minimum to acomplish it. No emu is perfect within a couple of months especially on a low powered device like a psp (relax i no its not piss slow im talking compared to PCs) which would take years to tweak to perfection. Also the emu is a port so its not going to be full speed and its a port of a rather iffy emu which is also available on an xbox still not at 100% and your telling me it can be done on a psp. yes i know its based on individual Roms on the psp version whereas the xbox is general but its highly unlikly and the geezer probably just wants to take some hype away from the downgrader just released, but still, if this guy is legit, if you guys really take a look at people like PSDonkey who blagged about a perfect emu and lied out his butt hole and considered moderately high in the dec scene, then you start to get the impression that things dont add up.
STILL, heres hoping this is real and the day it comes out is the day i will gladly be prowd to be wrong.
All I can say is check my heart to see if I'm still alive. I never though PSP would be able to play Zelda Ocarina of Tiem full speed. Its like the ground is shivvering OMG!!! This may be the bets week of my life. Even though I have no use for the downgrader since I was already firmware 1.5. but it still rocks that there is one cause not all my m8s can downgrade. You got a couple of good points together with a 100% correct gut feeling. Im sold, ITS A FAKE :D. On a fair note, i guess we really cant guess as to whether this is real or not, all we have is our hope, but you also forget, ZoMbi146 is a rather odd name for a dev, it sounds more like a n00b Hoax0r then a 1337 Hax0r. Still, cant judge by the name, but its a different approach to proving its fake, though it proves nothing, why i wrote it i dont know, why i havnt bothered to delete it is an even bigger mystry, but what gets me is why i am typing what i am typing right now, damn it.

I've been following the scene since the Japanese release, and I must say, this is a pretty good time to have a PSP. 2.5/2.6 downgrading (finally), ZX-81 working on a GBA emulator (I've been hoping for that for a while now... He's the only one insane enough to work on it until it's full speed! :P), N64 emulators being worked on left and right (with one possibly running quite a few games full speed), DevHook... Pretty much the only things we need now are 2.7 homebrew, and emulators for Saturn and PS1 (I know someone was working on the PS1... Whatever happened to that?).
I'll even go as far as to say that this rivals the times of Hello World and Swaploit/KXploit, and that's saying a lot.
P.S.: If Paper Mario can run full speed, I do believe I will reach Nirvana.
If the day ever comes that I can play Killer Instinct (1) on my PSP, I will literally have to give up my life to dedicate 24 hours a day to playing it ! :)

Yes, question QJ, Demand answers. UltraHLE... amazing high level emulator. I remember back in the day with my Voodoo 2 card I got full speed N64 on my 300 MHz PC. If he can get Majora's Mask working on this thing too that would be sick.
I am so glad I still have 1.50 on my PSP (never upgraded to 2.50+).

This looks to me like the PS1 Emulator hoax all over again.
The one where it showed a picture, yep, a picture not a video of finaly fantasy 7 looks as though running at full speed (even though you cant tell) it took a pretty long time to get to that boss on the picture (it was the first boss, the scorpian one??)
anyways, the point is its probably just some dumb pic some noob put on to make it look real.
I mean look at the shade on the pictures, they are basically alike from the shade on a TV screen while being played with an N64 console.

The one where it showed a picture, yep, a picture not a video of finaly fantasy 7 looks as though running at full speed (even though you cant tell) it took a pretty long time to get to that boss on the picture (it was the first boss, the scorpian one??)

what a good place to get roms?
This seems like the most efficient way to get full speed emulation of n64 titles on the psp. Which leads me to the theory that Sony’s PSOne emu. will likely be coded for each title and not an all around emulator as we know it. The same way this emu works and the same way emus’ for other systems work on the gba. The emu is wrapped around the rom making each rom self contained. Notice that in his e3 address Mr. Hirai launched an eboot from the menu which lead directly to the game and not to a menu. Think about the e-distribution that Sony has planned for these classic games. Ask yourself which is more user friendly for the mainstream audience which Sony is trying to please, a piece of software that launches roms or just a self contained rom file.
Of course Sony might just hardcode the emulator into their forthcoming bios updates but in my opinion this "emulator" will be merely be a set of extension to which the software emulation layer will call upon while loading and playing the rom. Thus making the Sony emu. modular in nature and insipidly difficult for us homebrew enthusiasts to crack.

I wasnt aware that the memstick should be flashing. When you play snes roms the memstick doesnt flash.. Why would this be different. Oh but i'm sure someone will disagree though.

How about we use analog as the analog stick and the dpad as the dpad and to get to the c buttons you have to hold select down and then press the dpad and then a as x, b as square, l - l, R - R, start - start, Z as triangle
Then the c buttons dont interfere with the dpad during the game

Because snes roms are very tiny and n64 are usually 30-60mb, which of course will require streaming from memstcik, because it wont fit whole on psp ram.
I thought of that too but a lot of the time if you think about it, having to take your fingers of certain buttons to hit select then use a C button slows you down in a game. What if you have to keep hitting a or using the analog. That would mean you'd have to stop right where you're standing to hit a C button.

I see all those "fake", "cannot be full speed posts" like #91, and I have to support the fact that I'll wait before actually take that story for cash, but note that: No where in the news post did he mentionned "It will be running 100% full speed with sound and texture filtering", no...

I am not native english, but notice the word "would" saying he suggest that EVENTUALLY MAYBE each version will have optimizations allowing them to play 100% full speed with sound, considering it's easier to tweak the emulator for one rom with very specific settings. That doesn't mean it will be released with those optimizations, but they are on the way of being done, maybe, if he can.
That said, again there is people who say it cannot be achieved. Unfortunatly I am forced to disagree with you. Remember the times of the Dreamcast ? Right. PSX emulation is basically impossible on the Dreamcast, not as a multi-game emulator that is. The processor is not made to support that much. Now, remember what Bleem!DC made ? Yes, a one-game-only emulator for Metal Gear Solid and Grand Turismo. Being able to optimize some part that only this game uses and being able to optimize features only that specific game displays and removing the crap that specific game don't need reduces memory and CPU usage making the emulation much faster. SNES, NES, GBA, whatever your favorite emulator is, is coded to load any roms, but not all roms uses some parts of that emulator, but to run, the emulator will run those parts anyway, so they are just put into memory and stay there idling without being called. If those part would be removed, then, the compatibility would drop, but we'd have more speed into some games. Get where I am getting at ? This guy (sorry man, can't remember your name at 3:45 am hehe) is probably the one with the best idea to actually make games run full speed on the PSP.
While other N64 emulators have good concept, I do know they won't ever be full speed (I can be wrong on this, but I am quite sure the PSP is not that powerfull) because they are running a lot of things they do not need just so the compatibility is highered. The concept of one-game-only emulator is probably the best way, once the basic emulator is ready, it's only tweaking the source code for graphic, sound, and texture emulation to speed up one specific game, something that cannot be done with simple configuration file as some codes needs to be added, some needs to be deleted to keep the emulator at it's lower memory usage.
In the end, I know this is a long post, and do not take offense (creator of this emulator), like other people said, I do not know you, so I do not know how real all this is, but if you ever release and get the best speed, you shall be recognize here. We all began somewhere. Good luck with your project, as I proven here, there is a lot of logic and you are probably the one with the best idea to get those roms working full speed around here, not the easiest or cleaniest way, but whatever, as long as it works !

I said months ago in the first n64 emu progress news that someone should port Ultrahle to the psp becuase of its advanced optimizations to run full speed on very low end pcs with specs similar to the psp (32mb ram, 300 mhz etc...). N64 emulation on the PSP needs this...Deadalus and Monkey64 are decent emu's but I totally agree with ikarius (#144) seperate loaders for each specific ROM is the only way to get each game running at the highest possible speed and these other 2 emu's don't do this...config files and what'not wont do for this emu...
And having seperate loaders isn't gonna take up much space at all, its the ROM size you should be worried about 8mb --> up...(I don't have to worry !gb pro duo)
Anyway can't wait to see the beta release and for all you haters out there get a life, all I see these days is post calling "fake" the whole time...be patient and wait and see before putting a developer who's put his own time and work into a project down.

1. Yes they did, I spent quite a while last year messing around with it. Just because its hard to find now doesnt mean that they never released it.
2. It's not going to out perform the XBox processor! The fact is that the PSP and N64 processors are both VERY similar, running on the same architechture. So with some optimisation, the processor will be able to handle an n64 game PERFECTLY.
I really hope this is real. Could you imagine having ad hoc Golden Eye multiplayer games with your friends?
It looks real, but then again the guy could just be taking screens from a pc emulator and viewing them on the PSP, so who knows.
well this sounds a lot more than those other 2 emu,s personally i think those other hyped emus never gonna work, BUT after reading the specs i guess ill be needing 1200 different loaders for the 1200 different n64 roms, I dont think a emu like that will hold it long on my psp, just too much trouble and things to do to just play some simple games,

The psp outperforms the ps2 in the emulation of Neo Geo CD.
I can't stand playing it on the ps2 because it plays so much smoother on the psp. I think it does the same on snes emulation also. When playing on the ps2 there are these annoying sound issuses that just make the playing experience horrible.

However, I myself question many things and indeed its quite a claim to have a full speed N64 Emulator, however realize the fact is that there is seperate binarys hardcoded for specfic roms, he is also using different source code, UltraHLE. I can\'t give you 100% proof, but I have no reason to doubt it.

UltraHLE... amazing high level emulator. I remember back in the day with my Voodoo 2 card I got full speed N64 on my 300 MHz PC. If he can get Majora\'s Mask working on this thing too that would be sick.

well, smash may not be supported in the PC version of UltraHLE, but i'm sure that if it's requested enough (which is very likely), he could make an eboot for smash. If he puts up a poll for future supported games, just vote for smash. Such a talented developer could surely get it working by himself

The DS has only got one N64 port on it - Mario 64 - and most people who own a PSP dont even know about homebrew, sadly. It's not going to affect sales of the DS at all - especially as sony only make a profit on game sales.

well, the two screens would fit if they were turned on their side. You'd have to hold the PSP a different way, but it's entirely possible if N64 emulation is possible. The real challenge would be input, but it can still be done

My emualtor is real and my real name is PSdonkey. I changed to this name becuase of all the hate I was getting with the old Donkey name. Right now 3 games work perfectly for my emualtor with full speed and sound. Most of the other games also work pretty good but these 3 games that I mentioned earlier work the best. And yeah, you can play the games all the way through to the end. Chill out everyone, I will release the emualtor very soon. I just have a couple more bugs to fix.

i think it looks real but i'm not saying yes or no as theres no proper evidence as of yet (pics look real but im still skeptical)
and as for the argument in entry 142 (no memstick read/write and the majority of n64 games would need streaming) is out of the window in reference to the games featured because i know for a fact the romsizes for both mario 64 and Zelda:OOT are at max 12-15mb (or around that) from experience with n64 emulation on pc so the roms used would fit within psp memory without need for streaming. the same would apply to GE as GE is 12mb. if it was Conker without Mstick write then that would be understandably fake as conker is a 64mb rom

i wasn't trying to say that, comment 142 said the screens were fake due to the fact there was no ms activity and they said that the roms would have to be streamed from ms rather than loading all into memory. i said that was wrong as the roms you were using were small enough to fit into memory without streaming.

the reason this article isn't very skeptical is because Jamie M. apparently knows zombi and his work, referring to this as an "update." So, this will hopefully see a release any day now. I understand why people are skeptical, but recently with surprise miracle homebrew like the new downgrader, it's possible! Some people said "fake" to the downgrader as well!

anyways, the PSP CAN RUN N64 GAMES AT FULL SPEED. And here is why: Its just as strong, if not stronger. now, before you yell at me about "well its also running the N64, not just the games for it. and memory would be used on that as much as the games etc etc" well, I never said emulated did I?
My idea is a N64 Rom Decoder/EBOOT encoder, correct me if I'm wrong, but if we have decyphered enough to make emulators of the games run on PSP (at lower speed), then we know enough to make a converter that could conver the roms into EBOOTS. now, distributing the eboots would be illegal, but not the conversion programs.
if the games were converted, there would be no emulator. It would all be native PSP code.
now the work involved in making a converter like this would be simply monolithic. So whats the next best thing? make individual emulators per game, taking out all the crap that game doesnt use, and optimising what it does use to recompile on the PSP with great speed.
I say this could be real if it isnt. because the stripped down emulator for each game It hink would take little enough memory to let the actual games run on the equivilent memory of a N64.

it should be able to play zelda as well. the game is 25mb if i remember correctly, so as long as the emu/loader isnt realy big, it should work well.

zombi said that his wife was going in for what sounds like an ultrasound scan. It's the way that is widely used to find out the gender of a baby by simply moving the handheld scanner over the womb and viewing the scan onscreen.
It takes literally, half an hour at most. Theres no reason whatsoever to take a laptop into the hospital (where most electronics cannot be used due to possible interference with expensive hospital equipment. The equipment has to be verified safe beforehand - Believe me, I know. My mum is a nurse).

Maybe I was unclear but my wife was close to already having the baby and now she just gave birth to a baby boy. That is why we are still in the hospital. to reply to #414, those pics of the emulator aren't necessarily at full speed with excellent quality sound and perfect graphics. In fact, if u look at the shadows under mario and the sign, they're not perfectly round. They've been chopped off in two places to form a right angle. Daedalus PSP has that same exact bug
I'm not saying that this is a pic of daedalus either. That level of quality in the lighting has never been achieved yet in Daedalus PSP
So, looking at it more closely, u can plainly see that this is indeed an actual emulator and not a screenshot. So even if u don't trust zombi146, i have pretty much proven it is real for you. No more arguing

I have been getting flooded with many emails from people who want to beta test my emulator. Instead of having beta testers, I 'm going ahead and going to make an early Alpha release of my emulator to the public. I'm going to send Jamie the updated version late this Friday and then give out a public build to everyone this Sunday. I have made some advances in the code and now another game called Mario kart64 actually runs alot better in this new version. So now there will be 4 different eboot loaders for the 4 games that run full speed with sound. Now the games that work good are: Mario64, GoldenEye, Zelda OOT, and now Mario kart64. It's exciting to find out the sex of the baby. I want to share my happiness with everyone by giving a public build to everyone this Sunday. By Friday night, Jamie should have already confirmed the validity of my work on the front page and by Sunday everyone will have a working coopy of the Alpha release. one question, why is the picture of zelda near the very begining of the game, if its so fast, why didint you go striaght into gameplay and take a picture from there? Seems like someone got bored of waiting for deadalus to load zelda to the gameplay point at 4 fps.

i explained why this isn't daedalus. Daedalus has some lighting effects missing. The lighting in this emu looks great. That screenshot was probably taken so early in the game so that zombi could get back to coding!

when this arrives, this will be a breakthrough in psp emulation. Zombi and Strmnrmn have done excellent work on their emulators, its incredible how good its gotten.
i was playing mario on daedalus, and even on 7fps it aint bad. think of that, but at like much better speed. its a really big achievement, and alos the best three games have been released, with updates im sure of in the future. without the separate eboot stuff, we may never have had full n64 emulation.

Well, I've been thinking of this a lot the last few days, and I was wondering, since this has to run on roms, because it would be illegal to distribute otherwise, wouldn't it be possible for you to take, say the Mario eboot, and replace the rom with another rom, such as mario kart. It should be able to run, albeit a little slow, but run none the less. It seem kinda possible doesn't it? Or maybe I'm just blabbering about something that won't work. I guess we'll have to wait for it to come out so we can see how it's set up.

This is true what Monoloco says. Real developers do not keep their work all for themselves. At least not their binaries. Even when their code is at an early stage they release their alphas. Remember that they are not 10 and no longer suffer from the syndrome of pointless selfishness.

I believe "zombi" told us this a while ago that he wasnt realeasing it. This is actually the second time that the fake zombi has said he will not be releasing it, which is even more of a stab at saying hes a fake.

You know what, after looking a little closer at the facts of this emu I've decided to call this bluff early.
1) The author claims a full speed emulator on first release WITH sound with no prior PSP programming background. Look at any other programmer (ex. ZX) and you'll see they started off small to get the hang of the PSP programming platform.
2) This guy appears out of nowhere. This is kind of continuing off point #1 but seriously it is very odd to get new programmers to a somewhat difficult programming platform and immediately produce something incredible. As the saying goes, learn to walk before you run.
3) It starts as all fakes do: Author claims full speed emulator on first release and claims to release it PUBLICLY very soon after initial news of existence. Author then claims on a *special* day (around a week later) he will actually release it privately just to prove that it is real; NOT because of a crucial bug, NOT because it is extremely unstable and can brick your PSP but JUST TO PROVE IT IS REAL.
So due to the above reasons stated I've decided I will not wait till the 14th and have already called this bluff. My predictions for this emu's history to come: 1) On the 14th either nothing will happen or we will hear of a reason (excuse) why he has chosen/cannot release his emulator OR he will release it and it will be a prank, 2) We will never hear of him again.
Sorry for the disappointment folks but sometimes you have to think reasonably and not just hopefully.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't rather have Daedalus in the end when it DOES have full speed and sound. Now it doesn't have sound yet, which makes it imo not very fun to play games with.
Daedalus will not get speed close to maximum in some time yet, they need to implement sound support as well. Even though there are 2 devs working on it, I wouldn't expect it running any better than ZoMbi146's ''claimed'' emulator at this time.
Daedalus is far from perfect or playable. But like I said earlier, I rather have 3 games fully playable now than lot's of games unplayable at this time.
