NeoGeo EmulatorSpeedy guys, those Japanese devs: Only a few hours after Alpha 1 of the promising emulator was released, here we are again with Alpha 2. Made by NJ, the author of the excellent NeoGeo CDZ Emulator, this one supports the arcade romsets. This also means that due the nature of ROMs, some games will not be playable, as they are too big to fit into the PSP's memory. However, the download includes a handy list saying which games are supported and which aren't. While the readme itself is written in Japanese, the list contains the English game names, so there should be no problems checking out which games to try with this new emulator.

Translated once again by QJ's own Jeff C., here comes the changelog...

Changes in Alpha 2:
- BIOS selection is moved into file browser.
Press Square button to bring up the selection menu in the file browser.
- The help will be displayed only when you start the emulator for the first time (for the change above).
- Auto-frame skip is changed to enabled as the default setup.
- SRAM and memory card are now not saved when a game fails to start.
- Added some fixes that enables some more games that were not supported.
Some very large games still cannot be emulated.
(Please check the list.txt for the list of games. Part1: games that should be supported; Part2: Games that are not supported now but possible in the next beta; Part3: games that are too large to fit in the PSP memory so still cannot be emulated)

* Simplifying the user interface for free up some more memory, some games may become supported this way, but basically this change has little effect.

The gngeo is emulator for gp2x , and support a big roms, create a gfx . With tool dumpgfx . Run a 100 % with 250 mhz

Because this emulator in the future cannot emulate roms great if the gngeo does?

# Getting this thingy to work.Guest 2006-06-15 07:28
So, I'm guessing these are for the REAL NEO-GEO games?

Like Blazing Star and other arcade games?

I have the bios in the folder but whenever I go to load up a small file (MS1 = 13 megs) it says could not load NEO GEO BIOS.

So whats the deal? I'm really eager to get this thing working, so help a guy out?

Aim me at BlingyMcFly if you'd like, I'm on right now.

This is great but I prefer the neocdz emulator because you can leave the music out and zip the game file to save space on the memory stick. It would be great for the games that never came out on neo geo cd.

# PROGRESSS!!!!!yamabigdog 2006-06-15 13:12
OK heres what I did to get 1 game working.

Put neogeo bios in ROMS folder, with that name, just "neogeo". The file should be 261kb and zipped. Must put game/ROM in that folder too.

I got NAM 1975 to work only. I have only tested Fatal Fury2 and Samurai Shodown, will test much more later tonight.

From what I can tell at this point this is a very early and buggy build. Alot of games much lower than 32MB are not running, and I know they are good ROMS. I think it may be due to the fact I am running 2.0 firmware, using eLoader 0.97 and eMenu.--01, and they are taking up a few precious MB, causing slightly larget games not to load.

Oh well my 2 cents. Hope I've helped.

# gigger roms 2Guest 2006-06-15 20:12
i know its a litle different but deadelus n64 emulator has a sort of rom streamer... it load the decripted rom when it need. the psp got only 32mb of ram and generaly the emulators load all the rom in the ram.

but deadelus handle roms like conker bad fur day (64mb) and zelda majora mask (64mb)...

(note: it will speed up the emulation of gba too if it s used on a gba emulator( use only 8mb or ram for the rom)

# More Progress Reportyamabigdog 2006-06-15 20:52
Yes well at least for 2.xx using eLoader I guess we have less RAM to work with, so I tried a few more small games. Anything on the NEOGEO Master List that is around 55 MEG will work. Maybe slightly bigger.

http://www.neo-geo.com/snk/masterlist.htm

ROMS Tested So Far:

Crossed Swords-15-20 FPS

Nam 1975-55-60 FPS

King of the Monsters-55-60 FPS

Magician Lord-55-60 FPS

The Super Spy-55-60 FPS

Riding Hero-Runs, but cannot see track=-(

Thrash Rally-Did Not Load

Fatal Fury 2-Did Not Load

Samurai Shodown-Did Not Load

Will test some more tommorow, no other games really grabbed my attention with that low of MEG count.

This is very promising looking. I hope you guys keep up this excellent project. If you can get the compatibility up with the NGCDZ emu, would truly be an awesome thing!! I will be checking PSPUpdates nonstop now!

Are these 3 lists supposed to be all games on Neo Geo grouped in Working, Partially & Non-Working? Can't see my favorite "Nightmare In The Dark" anywhere, so I wondered if anyone's tested it? At work right now so I can't check for myself...

# Try getting arcade ROMSyamabigdog 2006-06-16 09:35
Ive noticed on a few ROM sites that they have the home clones separated from the arcade originals. If you have one of the home clones it probably won't work. When you go to these sites try checking under ARCADE/MAME sections for NEO GEO roms. I also got a couple more working.

Eightman-55-60 FPS

Crossed Swords- 45-60 FPS;Had to lower sound to 22000khz.

Will test more later.

Great release.. Now you can have far more Neo-Geo roms on your MS than with the Neo-Geo CD emu. Most of the classics play at full speed. I suggest playing Nam 1975, Baseball Stars 1&2, Cyber-Lip, League Bowling, Top Player's Golf... also check out my NEO-GEO fan site while you're at it :P -- videogameobsess ion.com > click on NEO-GEO site link at bottom... I can't wait for more updates on this emu... A++

# rom set not support....Guest 2006-06-17 16:09
is the message i keep getting. i am using a neogeo.zip i found somewhere which is 261 kB so probably the one that yamabigdog mentioned using. i've tried league bowling which is a really small rom (only about 1.1 MB) and i tried art of fighting which is about 69 MB and both gave me the same message: rom set not support. these were both on the first list of roms released with this version which is the list of roms predicted to work with this release. i guess the bios must be working otherwise it would be giving me a can't load bios error surely. it doesn't show up with the roms though. i tried a previous pspemu, an earlier edition in this series and the bios actually could be seen and executed. what am i doing right and wrong and does anyone know when an english readme is coming out. thanks for the help.

# more trial and errorGuest 2006-06-18 01:33
i've now also tried Aero Fighters 2 and Power Spikes 2 and both didn't work. i tried all the different bios versions within my 260kB bios and none of them resulted in anything different.

I then tried two other bios files i found, one a genie bios at about 390something kB and another which was only 67kB. both named them correctly and put them in the right place but said couldn't find bios.

is there a place where i can find out which rom needs which bios version, europe v.1 or 2, us v.1 or 2, asian v.1 or japan v.1, 2 or 3. i don't know which i'm supposed to be using.

cheers everyone
