Monkey 64 News

Ó

PSmonkey has recently updated his site which includes some new progress on his popular N64 emulator! I was very excited hearing about this news and after looking at the provided screenshot, was speechless!

Monkey64 is a N64 emulator for the PSP system which was started a few months ago by PSmonkey. Throughout the months we have seen a few updates with this emulator including a working version of the emulator and some excellent progress reports from PSmonkey. His most recent report tells us that he has decreased the number of bugs and has increased the number of compatible games. Although these games may be "compatible", they are not at the fully playable stage. The N64 is a very difficult console to emulate causing many emulator coders trouble, even on computers with superior hardware. PSmonkey has told us that Doom64 does work with the emulator and that you can get to the menu screen! PSmonkey has gone even further by providing us a wonderful screenshot of this Doom64 "pwnage" on the PSP! The screenshot is at the top of the article (click thumbnail for full image), so enjoy, and let's all give PSmonkey our support!

All I can say is thank you to all of the people who are involved in developing this emulator. I used to love my N64 when I was younger and would enjoy playing N64 on my PSP in the near future.

PSmonkey here.

Hey sorry little to lazy to reregister (since the site changed) but I posted more screenshots on my site.

Rampage 2 is now fully playable (posted screenshot), Quest64 runs to the title screen (posted screenshot) & bust-a-move 2 progresses further allowing me to actualy start up a game in puzzle mode (vs crashes due to a bus error i am still hunting).

I'll post more screenshots if more games show stuff running.

i was just thinking this, considering snes still goes slow, and gba goes SOO SLOW, whats the point of getting n64, it will be going like .000000000003 frames per minute

Anon at 8:47pm,

You have the though process a bit wrong. If you have not noticed i'm actualy getting about 3-5fps in games already. Some games do more simple things and get even higher fps but the norm is more around 3-5 fps. This is with out even doing hle or dynamic recompiling. Both of thoes should easly bump me to 30fps on most games. The reason being is I started from scrach and have had a key focus on making thing work for the psp. Snes & the gba emulator were ports of a pc emulator which had far more resources to waste. If I just did a straight port of say mupen64 or pj64, I probably would be getting 1fps or even less.

i see, well i didnt mean to bring you down (i was the one who wrote that) but we'll see how it goes, and yeah good job so far that is alot of progress, but im just wondering what the speed will be like, considering n64 emulation goes slow even on my computer, i dont understand how it could be good on a psp, but we will see

I remember about 5-6 years ago there was an n64 emu for the pc called Corn which could run Mario64 at 30-60FPS on my crappy 200mhz Pentium, so its possible.

I do doubt that the psp is capable of playing n64 games at 100%, if the SNES emu isn't playing all of the roms at full speed. Besides, ppl started the psOne emu much earlier but we never really heard about that development yet.

Still, I wish PSMONKEY good luck with programming this great emulator.

Keep up the good work !

Hey, I'd just like to say that there are indeed quite a few games running to menus now. Once textures are fully working I'm sure that even more will start working. Of course a lot still needs to be done, and tons of opcodes need to be implemented. Hopefully soon PSmonkey gets textures working so you all can see what great progress he's made. :D

call me xsouthpole...

xsouthpole: there is a new coming out that my buddies makin that will trick the psp into thinking its a windows xp computer! No, it's not no imitation, it so far plays microsoft word 2003, and excell. No luck with powerpoint oddly. If you are wondering why i am saying this, im saying this because when he finishes, this means we can use nintendo 64 emulators meant to be run on windows xp at full speed! PSMonkey is doing great and working diligently, but once this windows xp conversion comes out, we will be able to run psp homebrew emulators on our psp's to play homebrew!

Look everybody stop your bikering the bottom line is there is going to a n64 abviously its gonna run reasonably slow it would be a micricle if it could even emulate 30fps, sure its gonna be great to play n64 games on your psp but at that kinda speed it's gonna be more frustrating than fun.

thats the bottom line whether you like it or not.
