GBA emulator for PSPWe have a new GBA emulator on hand to add to our collection, thanks to the programming efforts of Exophase. He's new to the scene: the program's pretty young (Exophase's been working on it for about three months now), a start-from-scratch emulator and only a beta.

And it's already making eyes pop out, jaws drop open, and believers out of our QJ PSP homebrew forum readers. Exophase's designing gpSP with a premium on emulation speed and optimization. And even in this early stage he's hit the holy grail! Users simply cannot believe that their favorite GBA games will run at full speed, with the sound quality they've come to expect from a good-quality GBA game. It's even faster than the previous GBA-PSP emulator we've featured.

So far, gpSP v0.5 only emulates the core GBA system, and does not emulate the special hardware available on a number of GBA cartridges. This version will take 16Mb-sized GBA ROMS (he's working on the capability to play the larger files).

There are a few caveats. Not all games will be compatible with this release; future updates will improve on the compatibility issue. Also, there are some games that will run slowly unless idle loops are taken care of; this is done through a supplied ROM database (game_config.txt) and on a per-game basis. As of this release there are a few games on the database; future releases will have more games added.

A very impressive effort for a bolt from the blue. Exophase, you have our kudos. Keep it up!

Instructions (from the readme.txt):
  • Provided is an EBOOT.PBP which will run as is on a 1.0 firmware PSP or custom firmware that can run unsigned EBOOTs. On 1.5 firmwares you must use a kxploit tool to run it (try SeiPSPtool). On 2.0 firmwares and higher further exploits must be used (see http://pspupdates.qj.net/ for more information). Note that this emulator has not been tested on any firmware version besides 1.5, and it"s very possible that it doesn't run well, or at all on higher versions. Therefore I strongly recommend you downgrade if possible, and use Devhook to run games that require > 1.5 version firmwares.
  • Be sure to include in the same directory as the EBOOT.PBP file the game_config.txt file included and the gba_bios.bin file which you must provide yourself.
As this is a beta, both Exophase and we here at QJ will be very grateful for your comments on this program, both here and at our forums. The standard warnings about uploading executables to your PSP still apply, and don't forget to read the file's readme.txt for complete details.

Controls:
At the ROM selection screen:
  • Up/down: navigate current selection window.
  • Left/right: switch between file window and directory window.
  • Circle/start: select current entry.
  • Square: go one directory up.
In game:
  • Up/down/left/right: GBA d-pad
  • Circle: GBA A button
  • Cross: GBA B button
  • Square/start: GBA start button
  • Select: GBA select button
  • Triangle: Adjust frameskip
In frameskip adjustment:
  • Hold down triangle to keep up, press up/down to increase/decrease frameskip, respectively

by - 2006-08-20 00:19:31

wow.. this is truly impressive- I really didn't think much about the speed, but it was LITERALLY almost full speed.. Dang, I don't know how you did it but just wanna say THANK YOU!!
by - 2006-08-20 00:20:12
Wonderful

Roms I've tested: Final Fantasy I + II: Dawn of Souls (Full Speed) Final Fantasy IV Advance (Full Speed) Fire Emblem VI: The Sword of Seals (Full Speed, minor graphical glitches) Fire Emblem VII: The Blazing Sword (Crashes after pressing Start during intro movie) Fire Emblem VIII: The Sacred Stones (Full speed ingame, menus slightly slower) Pokemon Emerald (Freezes after loading rom, white screen) Pokemon FireRed (Almost full speed, frame skip 2-3, Charmander's Growl crashes emulator. I'm guessing other attacks will as well) The Legend of Zelda - The Minish Cap (Full Speed) All the games I tested and said they work full speed means with Frame Skip 0. Both Pokemon games didn't work too well, along with Fire Emblem VII. Very great work Exophase! I'm loving it. Full speed on many roms and its still a beta release! Keep up the great work!
by - 2006-08-20 00:24:01
Impressive.

Most impressive. Runs Metroid full speed - what I have been waiting for. A fully menu driven version of this would be something worth having. Top marks to the author.
by - 2006-08-20 00:46:09
Nice!

This is nice! Great work! Can't wait for the next release. Keep it up!
by anonymous stranger - 2006-08-20 00:46:46
wow

pretty soon it'll probably even get a REAL nice GUI like SNES, and have cheat compatibility! and pretty soon it'll be THE GBA emulator! nice nice, real good work man!!!
by - 2006-08-20 01:05:32
#32

It already is THE psp gameboy advance emulator!!!! Brilliant Work!
by - 2006-08-20 01:19:14
Huzzah.

Sounds great. I can't try it yet, but I hope that it'll support large roms soon. Thank you for your work. :)
by overflow.tiff - 2006-08-20 01:22:22
this is funny...

Exophase, when i was playing wario ware on this emu, it took only 10 minutes for your clever "blue screen of death" screen to come up. its very much like windows. "I regret to inform you your psp has just crashed" the emulator is the thing doing the crashing. i can still exit the emu without holding the power switch. the only downfall is that the sound is slower than the speed. this is some quality 5h1t, so thanks!
by - 2006-08-20 01:25:11

This is how development should be done. Rather than "Work in Progress" releases before the application is done, and hourly updates just for the sake of updating, release the thing when it's ready. Thanks very much for showing other homebrew developers how to release a stable and mature program. Your restraint in overcoming the urge to release before it's ready is admirable.
by - 2006-08-20 01:26:04
BIOS

Google cos-bios zip. It's the 2nd link there.
by - 2006-08-20 01:26:10
holy crap

I'm truly blown away. I can't wait for future releases...meanwhile, FF tactics advanced. thanks so much.
by - 2006-08-20 01:26:24
Jesus Christ!!!

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg It runs Double Dragon full speed with 0 frameskip!!! And Mario Advance 1 runs also full speed but with 1 frameskip!!!!! I died and gone to heaven................. Exophase, you're a great man to do something like this for human kind.
by - 2006-08-20 01:40:23
bios

i have the bios "gba.bios" but i don't have to convert the file to .bin how ???
by - 2006-08-20 01:42:13
@ #41

just rename the bios gba_bios.bin Thats it!!!!
by - 2006-08-20 01:44:16
exophase, will you marry me?

exophase you're my god! (i'm atheist though asd) anyways, this is simply awesome! i tried megaman battle network (the first) but it crashed. Zone of the Enders is running full speed! YAY!
by Rom Chau - 2006-08-20 01:44:35
Anyone Need Help?

You First Download the GBA BIOS file -Rename to gba_bios.bin (must be a BIN file so chage it to bin if its anything else) -Put the gba_bios.bin into the directory of the EBOOT file inside of the gpsp Folder (PSP/GAME/gpsp) -Make a Rom Folder Where ever you like of your choosing insideof your memory stick -Add your Favorite Roms inside your Rom Folder, and ENJOY!! Games I Tested: -Megaman Zero 4 (Not Full Speed But Good So Far, just change the Frameskip of your likings) -Metroid Zero Mission(Not Full Speed But Good So Far, just change the Frameskip of your likings) [press /\ to mess with the option of frameskip] to find the BIN go Google or Yahoo it out "gba_bios.bin"... sorry i can't tell you coz i used a program to dl it :P, so i dont no..... My Rating to This Emulator is 8/10 ^_^
by - 2006-08-20 01:48:27
Add me to the OMG! OMG! list.

Yes. The best so far. Truly impressive an impressive piece of work. Playing Yugi Eternal Duelist/Advance Wars and Tactics Ogre at almost playable speeds. Keep this up and there will be no more need to own a gameboy.

#39

Hey #39 where did you get that working double dragon?
by - 2006-08-20 02:23:04

till now, i tried 4 games: - Zone of the Enders: working full speed - Megaman Battle Network: it crashed - Golden Sun (ITA ver.): it crashed - Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls: workin fine, but not full speed. Hey, it's a 16 megs rom after all... Man, 2 out of 4 is not bad at all for a first release! Exophase, keep up the good work!
by - 2006-08-20 02:30:20
HOLY CRAP!

Wow! This thing is AWESOME! Especially for a first project. Probably the best GBA emu out so far... Needs some work with compatibility and speed for some games, but WOW! I cant believe I can play Pokemon and Mario in full speed!!
by - 2006-08-20 02:41:07
BIG UP

THIS EMULATOR IS THE SHIZNIT, YES
by - 2006-08-20 02:43:26

Firmware 1.52

Wont work :'( "The game could not be started. (80020148)"
by zx-81 - 2006-08-20 03:05:00
awesome work !

Excellent work Exophase ! keep it up :) @51: What i've done (as many other coders such as psp298) is to port an EXISTING GBA emulator to PSP ;). It wasn't the fastest way to have a working emu on PSP, but not the best way to reach full speed ... What Exophase is doing is to rewrite an emu from scratch, with many tricky stuff (as i can see in the source code). So we can now expect really good performances :). Zx
by - 2006-08-20 03:05:52
GREAT WORK

GREAT WORK. 100000 THX.
by - 2006-08-20 03:15:32
Minish Cap Crash

it crashed right after i got the broken sword and the map, it showed the map, then the emu crashed, oh well just when i was having fun. the emu is very fast i never thought there would be an GBA emu that would be this fast, with a little more work this will be as good as SNES TYL 0.42 ME keep up the good work
by - 2006-08-20 03:33:54
Great work

Some people are idiots @51 Great emulator. Save works fine on Advance Wars.
by yoshinatsu - 2006-08-20 03:34:25
@51

You piece of *****, dedicated months for his life for *****s like you and me and you flame him??? Go ***** yourself, devs are killing themselves for you and then you just crap them?
by - 2006-08-20 03:52:34
To the idiots --

ZX-81 did more than 99.9% of us, so stop bashing him. This is the kind of treatment that stops developers from releasing their achievements. It just shows that you're a rotten person from the core. Remember, ugly is only skin deep...but ugly is to the bone.
by - 2006-08-20 03:56:56
@64

Someone I.P Ban this n00b please, Well atleast we know there are still idiots in the scene. Good work n the new GBA emu i'll try it soon, and ZX-81 stay clear of these n00b's because they're quite childish and stupid as it is (Good work ZX-81).
by - 2006-08-20 03:57:41
The PSP Homebrew "Community"

Why do you flame ZX-81? He dedicated his time to give us a GBA emulator - you should really learn to appreciate someones work. Apart from that great Work Exophase, keep it up and solve the crashes.
by - 2006-08-20 04:02:14
blue crashes screen

When You load the rom, noting happening, after pushing O it show crashes screen, i tried some roms noone worked at such method!
by - 2006-08-20 04:06:17
I dont get it

I don't understand why PSP can emulate Neo Geo, CPS and GBA near-flawlessly but it still chokes on some Genesis and SNES games.
by - 2006-08-20 04:10:20
zx-81 and exophase

zx-81 and exophase should DEFINITLY team up!!!
by - 2006-08-20 04:23:30
.

to exophase, you should make arrows pointing to what rom is selected instead of having it a different color, it took me a while to figure out I was selecting the bios and not the game XD
by - 2006-08-20 04:25:41
zx-81 and exophase

I AGREE WITH #71 then it will be a super emulator!!!
by SeikenZ - 2006-08-20 04:27:32
attention whores

Everybody should just ignore those idiots, all they want is attention and thats what you're giving. Anyways great gba emulator Exophase, maybe you and zx should really try to team up. Who knows what kind of gba emulator you might have in the end.
by - 2006-08-20 04:27:37
re

"This is fricking amazing... Exodus (oops O_o) just out of the blue made this... AWSOME!!!" and pwnd zx, kind of like daelus came out of the blue and strm pwnd pspmonkey.

Help not needed now

Got it and its working now. Trying alot of games. Yoshi iland pretty good and link to the past good. minsh cap real good. Got a ton of roms so i will keep trying. ZX 81 your great and trust me people he knows it. Every dev contributes in there own way. For the flamers be carefull becuse one day they will just stop and you will have nothing. Exophase great work. 71 I like that ideal. I will right later on more rom findings and how they run.
by - 2006-08-20 04:38:08

Beautiful, mate. Thank you for a great new emulator! -SS PS: Minish Cap works at full speed with a frameskip of 1, altho I had to use no-kxploit to get it to work for me.
by - 2006-08-20 04:41:18
puke

man, you really suck... you that flamed zx-81, yes, you. you make me sick. you're nothing but sh*t, cause when zx-81 released his emu, you said "wow, zx-81, i love you!!" and now you flame him. zx-81, it's not worth answering, leave'em alone...

wow...

the many ppl that used to be excited to see a release from zx-81 now flame and call him nooby now cause he didnt make the fastest emu... i am ashamed of you all who said stuff like that... i still will use his emu because it loads pokemon emerald at a decent speed and doesn't freeze. as for this emu... i might not use it till it can load pokemon emerald without freezing or if zx makes his faster.

@84

Rename the bios to "gba_bios.bin" Or else it won't work.
by - 2006-08-20 05:47:44
@84

Sorry i didn't read it fully, but my bios works perfectly? I'd love to help but uploading it here = ban.

psp crashes

hi when I am attempting to play many gba roms with this emu the psp crashes. I am using a 1.5 psp and I do have the bios set up correctly but in a few games the emu boots a game and then after around 2 mins of play my psp crashes out to a blue screen, I want to know if anyone else is getting this problem or if there are any fixes? thanks
by - 2006-08-20 06:20:35
To ZX-81

Your work is great and i hope this doesn't stop you from your work on your GBA emulator as it was you who made the first real breakthoughs after all.
by - 2006-08-20 06:21:19
@51, 63 & 64

They're the same person so just ignore him. Anyone who's been involved in this scene for a while knows how great a coder ZX-81 is and how much effort he put into his project so who really cares about what anyone else says anyway... Good job, both Exophase and zx-81.
by - 2006-08-20 06:32:34
90#

yeah 51,63 and 64 are the same people and real idiots to disrepect ZX-81 like that after all hes done for us and all the efforts he put into his work.
by - 2006-08-20 06:43:42
Nice Work

Haven´t had a shot at trying it yet but from what I´ve read it seems great. It´s great that an emu was made from scratch. I can´t believe the number of idiots out there. Stop flaming peoples hard work. Zx put alot of time into his programming and most of us apreciate it. These guys make no profit, they do it just so we(psp users) have more great things on our psp. So stop flaming and be thankful
by - 2006-08-20 06:47:53

We should probably get some kind of human changelog for this post from all the tips people keep giving. Thanks for the assist!
by - 2006-08-20 06:50:17
GREAT WORK i can play DBZ SUPERSONIC FUllSpeed

AWSOME WORK MAN hey ASK ZX-81 to work with you then we have awsome GBA ON THE PSP :D
by - 2006-08-20 07:02:02
stumped

well, i'm stumped. I cannot for the life of me get this thing to work. Every rom I try to boot appears to load, and then just hangs on a white screen (and sometimes I can hear jittering sounds). I've tried a number of BIOS files and nothing works. It's weird, since I've never had any trouble loading any other emulators before. maybe the next version will work for me :(
by - 2006-08-20 07:03:52
WTF!?!??!

How the !@#$ are u supposed to install this??!?!??!??!??!?!
by Loz - 2006-08-20 07:11:48
THIS IS AMAZING!

First Post! I have been a lurker on the scene for a long time now, quietly enjoying the amazing apps people have been coming up with and building my ulitimate collection of roms and emulators to play all my favourite games. This is like christmas come early. I was sceptical when reading about this emu after having tried the other gba emulator out and listening to all the naysayers but my god. This emu is only 3 months old and is close to perfect already. I can now play all my Castlevania and Metroid roms at FULL SPEED!. I thought it would be another 6 months till i could do that. It defies belief. The only thing is the sound is a little glitchy at the moment, but that will be ironed out in time. This emu given enough attention will easily be able to reach snes9tyl quality, it really is that good. With the new PS1 emu coming out soon and N64 Emu in full flow, In 1 year the psp will be able to play just about every game I ever loved. Its Amazing. VIVA LA PSP!!! If this dude is taking donations, Im there!

combatability

sma 2, crashed near start up, bad sound, good speed. minish cap, great speed, good sound, awesome with 1 frame skip. crashed right after you receive the hyrule map. final fantasy tactics advance, good speed, ok sound, crashed while reading the book at the beginning. superstar saga, pretty much perfect, doesn't need frame skip, sound pretty good too. froze when met bowser, no crash. the emulator has great speed and sound is almost up to that too. I've been waiting for a playable like this gba emulator ever since i started using homebrew. all it needs is minor speed and sound improvements and to not crash, but awesome work man, thanks a lot!
by - 2006-08-20 07:51:11
Thanks to both!

I thank ZX-81 for his outstanding effort and dedication to the VBA port of the GBA emulator and for Exophase for his talents also as a great coder. You're both always welcome to my house! -Dan
by - 2006-08-20 07:55:23
I couldn't get zelda or pokemon to run

When i put them in the folder and start up the emu on my psp it stay at the psp screen and shuts down. Also great work the emulator is near perfect on many games and if the sound issues were sorted out it would be perfect. I was hoping for Golden Sun to run but it crashes but i'm sure these issues will be sorted out eventually. Thanks Stephen
by - 2006-08-20 07:57:59
GBA

Games tested so far. Prince of persia sands of time pretty good. Haverster moon great. Dynasty warriors great. Spliter cell runs well with frame skip set at one. Baulders Gate works great. GTA Advance crashed. Kindom of harts will not start for me anyways could be bad rom. I will keep on testing.

I LOVE EXOPHASE

And thanks to all who helped me find a bios. God bess!

Golden Sun

Golden Sun crashes saying: Exception - Bus Error (instr) EPC - 08A0CB30 Cause - 80000018 Status - 60008613 BadVAddr - 6988CB01 I'd type in all the other stuff but that would take like 10 minutes. ;)

@110

Make sure your rom is highlighted in white and NOT green before you select. This is an easy mistake to make when only 2 items are in the menu.

You idiots ranting on about how zx-81 sucks, are all losers who can't do a hundredth as good as him. This emulator is outstanding, but both devs are great. Zx-81 put his hard work into PSP-VBA, and you guys sit here leeching his work criticizing it. You four year olds get off the internet, or show some appreciation for how hard these guys are working, not for their own benefit, but for yours.
by - 2006-08-20 09:52:41
Oh, and..

Great work to Zx-81 and Exophase both, you guys are awesome ^_^ Definatley consider teaming up.

OMG

OMFG, can this even be real? I mean... whoa, the speed of this emu is just unbeliavable O_o Everyone has claimed Zx-81 to be the best emu coder around here, and when he said that there is not much to be done to get his PSPGBa emulator any faster, i thought it was then as fast as it would ever get... but now out of blue this dude comes up with his lightspeed GBA-emulator, with even Pokemon Sapphire running TOO DAMN FAST, this ***** is unbeliavable... O_O Zx-81, you should consider urself chalenged now. How are you going to respond? :D PS: I think Exophase is my new god now. HA-HA, ZX-81. YOU NEED TO TRY HARDER!!
by - 2006-08-20 10:05:51

Well this is a great surprise for the Homebrew community. This emulator, after a bit tweaks and a gui, will be one of the most acclaimed :) Great job! P.S.: nice to see all those n00bs with their 2.80 trying to load this ;°D

by - 2006-08-20 10:22:57

No that would just tke up more time and would be pointless as you can downgrade to 1.5 to play the good version
by - 2006-08-20 10:33:15
2.0

Yes it runs perfectly on 2.0 and I didnt even use the GTA loader yet. You did a FANTASTIC job EXOPHASE. You really deserve more credit than your getting even though you are getting alot :). I am very impressed and you have so much potential as a coder its scary. Good job exophase.

Dude, I love you. I love you so much. I now have a reason to play my PSP again.

My PSP has been collecting dust for the past few weeks. I've been bored with all the recent PSP games lately, nothing has really interested me. I just downloaded this and tried a few roms, and I was very skeptical about all the full speed comments, but HOLY %#$^@^ THIS THING IS AWESOME. I set frameskip to 1, and everything is smooth and JUST AMAZING. I want to thank you so much man, keep up the excellent work. Now my PSP is up and running again :D This being your first release and all I can say I'm scared of what you'll come up with next... looking foward to it though. 10/10 plz marry me

THIS IS AWSOME IM PLAYING SUMMON NIGHT AND IT PLAYS PERFECTLY!!!
by - 2006-08-20 11:08:56
ZX-81

ZX-81 needs to help out with this emulator. These guys have done great jobs separately now if they work together they can accomplish much more- Those of you who like to insult anyone for their work are just acting your age. Take soem time to think about what these DEVs are doing and appreciate it...probably anyone who posts in these spaces cannot program - and only those people who are weak and pathetic would write such things , which show a lot about their mentality. So lets support them both either working alone or together
by - 2006-08-20 11:14:05
Wow!

I can't believe how good this runs, great stuff. :o)
by - 2006-08-20 11:14:18

by - 2006-08-20 11:25:49
My comments

While being an impressive piece of work, you also wreck many developpers thoughts about getting full speed GBA emulator, although that is a very good thing. I tried a few roms and you can see the many limitations of this emulator. Considering my big collection, I am planning to do a compatibility list, probably today and may contact you (Exophase) to ask you some questions or if you need help from a developper or anything. I am really impressed by the performances of this emulator. While the compatibility is low and crashes the GBA several times and cannot load certain types of ROMs, this is a short step to better compatibility. You reached the point that no one else thought possible and for this, I think your name as a place in the "Hall of Fame" of the PSP programmer (along with ZX-81 who worked on about 5 emulators at the same time). Good luck in the future and keep 'em coming !
by - 2006-08-20 11:48:45

For those inquiring for use on 1.5 fw

This question is answered in the readme file included with the download. He suggests using the program "SeiPSPtool" to for use on 1.5 fw. Since I have 1.5 fw, I followed directions. I'll share my findings.. 1. Download "gpSP v0.5 Beta" 2. Create a folder and extract "gpSP" contents to it. 3. Download "SeiPSPtool05b." and extract. 4. Connect PSP to PC with USB. 5. Run "SetPSPtool.exe" 6. Enter "gpSP" in name field. (This is going to be the name of the folder) 7. Click "..." and choose "whole folder." Find and choose extracted "gpSP v0.5 Beta" folder. 8. Check "Hide Corrupted image from list" if you wish. 9. Click "Generate" and choose "Export to PSP 1.5" 10. Find yourself a GBA.BIOS file and rename it to "gba_bios.bin" 11. Place in folder in GAME under PSP that includes the EBOOT.pbp (1.135 KB) file.

Cool!

i downloaded the proper GBA BIOS from the internet and am playing Metroid Fusion at fullspeed (though it lags in some areas). Thank you for this emulator! And to reply to a statement in your readme file, this is WAY better than PSPVBA and is now the #1 GBA emu. Congratulations!

Doesnt show all the graphics?

Heyy, this emulator rox the heaven, but there's just one little problem: in a certain game (pokemon sapphire) I've noticed that some of the graphics arent rendered at all, for example [yes/no]-confirmation boxes, menu selection cursor and other stuff like that doesnt show at all, like a whole "layer" of graphics wasnt there. Also in the game, when i try to access the computer, the small menu box doesnt appear properly and tends to bug heavily. I do realize that this is only a beta version of the emulator and there are supposedly many bugs, I just wanted to point out something to help improve the gfx issues in the future. Mkay, thats all. Cheers.

google: gba_bios.zip or try replacing .zip with .rar or .bin if that doesn't work. You're sure to get good results then

Some people should just be banned

Honestly, if I was a staffer here, I would ban those who bad mouth developers. You're ungrateful bastards who ought to go back to preschool and learn something about respect. Zx-81 made excellent process with his emulator, much farther then any of you ungrateful bastards could have ever made. #182, lets see you program a GBA emulator of equivelant speed. Come on, show us you can do better. On a postivie note, this emulator is excellent. I hope to see more of this soon. ^^
by - 2006-08-20 14:26:25
Keep up good work Zx81 and Exophase

We are not talking about who is better between zx81 and exophase. We are talking about their contribution to this little community. We shall be grateful to all the programmers out there that doing all the works to bring us the goodies. So shut the ***** up and stop bashing the programmers like that. Admin, I think it is time we have to make everyone registers, including me for the website. So whoever is going to bash the programmers here will be banned for life without any warning or mercy. You freaking couch potatos out there, if you are going to bad mouth any dedicating or non dedicating programmers in this community, better get the ***** out of this community because your ungratefulness is not welcome here, stupid jerks.

Hey guys

@ 193 Just PSPbrew it. Check this article for walkthrough on using it. It's a pretty long one, just go on the PSPbrew section and everything you need to know is there. Good Luck! http://www.qj.net/Welcome-to-the-1-50-World-/pg/49/aid/58048 To everyone, please don't put up links to illegal files, it'll only be deleted. A hint though, Google is your friend *wink-wink*. Also, the attention seeker has been banned, so worry no more about him. :)
by - 2006-08-20 14:53:29
awesome

Way to go, Exophase. I tried The Incredibles and Tiny Toons, and they both work almost full speed (with slowdowns in certain spots). The sound emulation is generally almost perfect during the startup screen(s), but gets really choppy during gameplay. Even as it is, it's still a helluva lot better than what any past psp gba emulators could reproduce. I think this emulator's slogan should be "25x the clock speed my ass!";)
by - 2006-08-20 15:00:22

i give up on this.....ive been trying for 4 hours now and i used pspbrew and i dont know should i still but the gba_bios.bin in the folder after using psp brew?and im just about to kill myself...why do people make my life so hard like this.... *goes gets rope to hang himself*

Finally a way for Alien Hominid to run well on my PSP! Sound is a little bit off, but maybe some tweaking will fix it...video is incredibly smooth.

For those who are lost...

I have found all the information needed to work this emu by reading the comments on this page. I used SeiPSPtool, found my bios and read the readme included. If anyone is still confuse, read ALL the comments and the answer should be there. By the way... Could the QJ staff make a 1.5 ready eboot??

no flaming ZX-81

Nobody should be flaming Zx-81. He spent tons of time working on his emulator for US for FREE. Heck mostly all programers do the same thing. Heck this one might not of came out if ZX-81 hadn't rvived the gba emulator scene. Still, it is kinda sad that Zx-81 couldn't have done what exophase did.
by - 2006-08-20 16:41:26

Havent tried a GBA emu on PSP, but I do believe thats about to change.........
by - 2006-08-20 16:48:45

by Kaemon - 2006-08-20 16:49:57
Great

Well, this is great and it works well, but is there a way to use the anolog stick, since my up and down D=pad dont work to well -_- This is amazing though...
by - 2006-08-20 16:54:49
Guys please read

Guys, please do not keep suggesting that Zx 81 or Exophase or any developer to work together. I think that is the matter that they will decide whether or not it will be efficient to work together as a team or not because they may have conflict ideology, which may lead to the lag of developing new updates and programs. So, I think it will be best to let the developers decide, don't make any developer think that he/she must relies on anyone to complete any task. Any of them has their own unique and style. They all have potential in becoming the next great developer of this PSP community. So, all we have to do is showing support, giving feedbacks, and suggestions regarding the applications instead of making suggestions on how they shall work. Thanks for reading.

1.5 Package

This one doesn't have the BIOS included (QJ removed my last one..) http://rapidshare.de/files/30161714/gpSP_15_nobios.zip
by - 2006-08-20 17:58:03

by - 2006-08-20 18:04:02
WOW

gunstar super heroes runs @ full speed (frameskip @ 2), but crashes when you enter the second screen of the first stage. Love how the GBA has progressed, keep up the great work.^_^V
by - 2006-08-20 18:09:11

by KuffoMan_11 - 2006-08-20 18:22:07
which?

by - 2006-08-20 18:24:28
holy shyt!

wow thankyou! hazae im gona quote you cause you made it work :D. Place in folder in GAME under PSP that includes the EBOOT.pbp (1.135 KB) file.

by - 2006-08-20 18:27:50
220!!!

nr 220. get pokemon ruby. it works. yea im playing it full speed!
by - 2006-08-20 18:29:24
Great!

This emu is FANTASTIC! I never EVER thought sound and speed would be so fast and recognisable in a GBA emulator for PSP. Even though this is great... my psp keeps crashing after playing a game for a little while. That blue "we regret to inform you that your PSP has crashed" screen always takes me by surprise. Will this go away in later releases, do you think?
by - 2006-08-20 18:35:39
hehe

nr 225. Exosphere did release his source... its unstable cause its a beta hence its no so stable. Wait for the first non beta release. :) Cant wait though!
by KuffoMan_11 - 2006-08-20 18:54:01
when is.....

Is StrmnNrmn gonna release his emu before aug. 28 I hope, I start school and can't really play video games. :-o
by KuffoMan_11 - 2006-08-20 19:01:04
OK?

now I got Pokemon Emerald, (but thanks no. 223) now it's telling me that battery is dry(odd) and that clock based events wont occur! How the hell does a game mess up because a battery is dry. I can save and all but clock based things like competitions and such require the clock, is there a way to have a "fresh" or "wet" battery to get it to work properly, or must I wait for the following release for a fix. can someone help? comment anyone?
by - 2006-08-20 19:10:02
nr 228.

nr 228. :D "IT ALWAYS SAID BATT DRY, WHETHER U RAN THE EMU ON A PC OR PSP". Dont worrie about it, once u load the game u will be directed into the house and your mom will tell you to change the clock. Then everything will be fine. But you cant save yet unless your planning to play the game 24/7 lol!
by - 2006-08-20 19:46:47
i love this emu!!!!!!!!!!111

this is so freakin awesome i love it best emu ever or yet lol
by - 2006-08-20 20:03:39
saving?!!?!

how do you save your games on the emu???
by - 2006-08-20 20:07:37

いみわからんw
by chickdigger802 - 2006-08-20 20:27:35
231.

you save ingame like in any gba game (save spot etc) theres just no savestate yet. its like on vba or anythin it creates a save file for the rom so its all cool xD... its soo alsome all the new hot gba games are running full speed! (swordcraft, super robot, dragonball adventure) lmao my psp has 'backwards gba capacibility' now xD
by KuffoMan_11 - 2006-08-20 20:44:43
I wonder...

some people are getting their Golden Sun rom to play without the crash in the beginning of the intro. Which Golden Sun is it because I downloaded 2 different ones: G-Masters.com Emuparadise.org
by - 2006-08-20 21:08:34
REALLY GOOD

this is a really good app. I cant wait for it to be developed even further. also, ppl dont dis zx-81. he is the main reason why we have a good emulator of gba that saves games, takes pics and is very stable. if oyu flame him, then why dont you make a psp app that great... or even better.... since u think his pspvba sux y dont u take this challenge... make a ps2 emulator for psp since u r SOOOOO good and WAY BETTER than zx-81. Since u r better than him and have probably decided not to make a "lame" gba emu for psp than making a ps2 emu should be childsplay to u losers. so until u can produce results like zx did, donnt flame him i incosiderate morons
by - 2006-08-20 21:11:47
and yea

pokemon works great on this but until it can do state save... i wont be playing it on it.... too annoying megaman battle network 6 crashes after intro... i will try 3 and 4 n 5 since they r the only good 1s
by - 2006-08-20 22:46:04

I've never tried any of the other GBA emus because they never seemed to show much progress but when I saw the compatibility for this baby I had to give it a go. Here's gpSP with bios included and even a couple of games to get you started (this package is only for 1.50 PSPs!): http://rapidshare.de/files/30176591/gpSP_op_.rar.html All you have to do is drag and drop the two folders into your GAME folder and presto. (press X button when selecting gpSP and then press O button when selecting a game). Also, it's a good idea to frame skip. When ingame press triangle button to change frame skip.
by - 2006-08-20 22:52:20
needs stability

very impressive until it crashes.... tested game: zelda: the minish cap crash after getting first sword in the game good work anyway...keep it up
by - 2006-08-20 23:10:31
legend of zelda crash

IT runs great and the sound is great also but after i got the map it crashed :(
by - 2006-08-21 00:09:56
Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo runs great BUT you must skip the title screen befor the car starts with the engin sound. After that set skip 1 fram and you good to race and its pretty cool game at that. Playing Golden sun for a wile now and Im impressed. Gran Turismo Advance is great to.
by - 2006-08-21 00:17:17
Zelda Minish Cap

i also tried it and i got the sword but when they gave me the map it crashed, this emu is great just some bugs to fix
by Supashay91 - 2006-08-21 01:00:36
Awesome

MAn thank you so much, I just tried Castlevania Harmony of Dissoance, and it runs at full speed, but the music is a bit laggy, but for your first project and from SCRATCH this is quite amazing, if you and ZX-81 teamed up I bet we would have PSPs that cure AIDS!
by - 2006-08-21 01:24:38

Splendid!!! full speed, tested with final fantasy tactics, final fantasy 1 and 2. Perfect ^^ yea the sond is a little poor... but the speed is Awosme!
by - 2006-08-21 02:07:14

Please make a downgrader v2.80
by - 2006-08-21 03:26:22

by - 2006-08-21 05:53:17
BLUE SCREEN ERROR?!?!

I have just started the program, select the bin file, the gameboy logo runs, and then i get a blue screen that says: "i regret to inform you your psp has just crashed", right below that it gives some "exception details exception: bus error (instr)" with alot of numbers after it underneath it. Then, at very end, it says: "the offending routine may be identified with: psp-addr2line -e target.elf -f -c 0x8a.....(more numbers and letters)......." i am sure this is good program, which is why i am really eager to try it, but i can't do anything about it until my problem is solved. Can someone please help me? I've done everything right, I have a 1.5, got the bin file... just take my word for it... everything has been done right... i've been here since hello world on 1.5, yet i still can't figure this out. any help would be appreciated. in any case THANK YOU EXOPHASE!!
by - 2006-08-21 06:47:09

@246 the extracted @247 you have to load the rom not the bios file the bios is loaded automaticly when the rom starts
by - 2006-08-21 07:43:49
>> 247

When running the emulator, don't actually select the GBA_BIOS.BIN, just select the game rom
by - 2006-08-21 08:20:40

Can't get this to work, have the pack with bios etc. all correct but get: "I regret to inform you your PSP has just crashed. The offending routine may be identified with psp-addr2line -e target.elf -f -c 0x8a0cb30 0x0 0x0" please help!
by - 2006-08-21 09:24:38
#250...

#250, look at my post at #237
by - 2006-08-21 09:29:19
errors

the people who gets the regret to inform errors, just try loading a diff rom.i got a error on pokemon emrald but ruby and everything else iv tried works fine, i dont even use frame skip cause it makes it look more laggy. if u dont use frame skip its soo smooth.
by Philmc.co.uk - 2006-08-21 10:35:33
Stunning.

Amazing work. I was thinking of selling my PSP, but with all this new homebrew I'll decide not too! Exophase, if you need any graphics or anything done, just email me - admin[at]modmedia.co.uk. Cheers, Phil.
by Exophase - 2006-08-21 11:30:47

Hey everyone, I just wanted to say that I think I introduced a bug into the code just a day or two before releasing that might be causing a lot more crashes than you'd be seeing otherwise :( I won't know until I look at it closer though. Sorry about that, truthfully this was a VERY rushed release. Next one should be better.
by - 2006-08-21 12:08:30
Light headed

I think I'm gonna pass out from the excitement. Can't wait to tryout future releases.
by - 2006-08-21 14:40:12

.

Here's the GBA emu all ready for you. BIOS included and even a couple of games to get you started. All you gotta do is drag and drop the two folders into your memory stick's GAME folder and presto. (This package is only for 1.50 PSPs!!!) http://rapidshare.de/files/30279830/gpSP_op_.rar.html
by scythe - 2006-08-22 08:13:37
sweeeeeeeeeeeet

this thing is ****ing awesome! you are a genius! the only flaw i encountered was the fact that when i was moving and used frame skip that i lost control of the d-pad....... but its a minor flaw.give us a new release soon with a save state!!
by - 2006-08-23 08:43:55
Doesnt Show ROMS in Browser

I got it to run and can navigate thru my folders easily, but cannot see any roms in rom folder... is this some kind of joke?
by - 2006-08-23 08:47:45

To agree with everyone else...OMG!

By far the best GBA emu out there and pretty much the only one now. I just have one question...actually 2: Why won't my custom config save and why can't you use the PSP joystick as the D-pad. I know this is still in beta and is incredible for having only been in development for 3 months; just wondering if this is a problem with me or just not supported yet.
